upgrading new video card vs mora RAM?
Can you tell us the full specs of what you have? That will help with suggestions and possibilities. Also, budget for this?
It is known that there are an infinite number of worlds, simply because there is an infinite amount of space for them to be in. However, not every one of them is inhabited. Therefore, there must be a finite number of inhabited worlds. Any finite number divided by infinity is as near to nothing as makes no odds, so the average population of all the planets in the Universe can be said to be zero. From this it follows that the population of the whole Universe is also zero, and that any people you may meet from time to time are merely the products of a deranged imagination.
Honestly I don't even know. I know it's a duel core only has 1 gig of RAM using the on board video card. Like I said not tech savy. My other computer died so I got this one from my friend for 50 bucks.
OK I was gonna upgrade but can only do 1 or the other at this particular moment in time. I know RAM will increase my load speed and video card would make for a smoother gameplay with higher graphics turned up.
Here's the thing I only have 1 gig of RAM right now and my load speeds seem too slow to bare sometimes so I was just gonna get more RAM but honestly I'm not really tech savy. What would you tech experts get first and would a better video card have anything to do with load times at all? Thanks for any help. |

OK I used a few websites/programs to help me find this info and I hope it's everything you need.
Currently I only have about 80 dollars to spend until like a week and a half down the road when I'll have about 250 dollars so I'm just kinda impatient and was wondering what would be better to improve my situation (RAMvsVideo card). As I said earlier my load times are to slow to bare sometimes and I would really like to solve that first.
I didn't look into the specs of the board you have, but with the $80 you have you could easily do RAM first and then do the card when you have the extra. Right now the on board video is probably what's slowing you down the most! If you were close by, I would give you a card. I have an HD5750 laying around that would work like butter compared to your on board. heh

OK for now I decided on then RAM and installed it ran around some in COH load into a few places/missions and all I gotta say is wow. It not only made my load times like a million times faster but I aint lagging anymore in zones like grandville and stuff so sweet. Now I just need a new video card to turn the graphics off minimum.
When buying a new video card, remember to take into account how much power your power supply can give to it. A lot of recent cards require a 600-700W PSU.

Your designator for the motherboard isn't specific enough for us to figure out what the board is. You may need to crack the case and take a look at the actual model number silk-screened on the board itself.
This way we can verify what sort of memory you're using and the type of motherboard connectors available to you for a video card.
However. With $80 now, and another $170 coming, I'd say do BOTH. That's a comfortable enough budget number to do so.
Also, as noted, get a look at the power rating of your power supply. This way we can suggest something that's within your system's power envelope.
Even if we have to get you a power supply to accommodate a new video card, I'm confident we can do it within budget.
Just about ANYTHING is going to be better than your current, onboard, Intel video solution.
Well with a 945 we know it's an Intel CPU and he should have access to a PCIe x16 slot. That CPU may still be a Pentium 4 family or early Core 2 family.
More memory will speed up the load times, smooth out your frame rate by reducing swap file thrashing (which you will get with very low memory) but won't increase your current frame rate (while standing around) or allow you to raise the graphic settings.
A better video card should allow you to raise the graphic settings and improve your frame rate but with only 1GB of system memory, you graphics will still stutter whenever the swap file thrashes. One unexpected problem for people upgrading their video card is the fact the better ones all require a more substantial power supply than what normally comes in your basic store bought Dell/HP/Compaq PC. Some of these PCs are a real pain when it comes to upgrading the power supply as well.
To give us a better idea what you have let me suggest that you post the output from DxDiag, at least the first part up to the System Devices, just after the Disk Drive section. I'm suggesting this instead of "our" CoHHelper application because you don't have to download anything and it sounds like you aren't super PC savvy. This will give us a more complete understanding of what you have instead of us playing 20 questions.
All you need to do to run DxDiag is select Start in the Windows Taskbar, select "Run..." in the left column, type in dxdiag in the Open: field and click OK. That should run Microsoft's DirectX Diagnostic Tool. Once the little progress bar disappears, press the "Save All Information..." button and you will prompted where to save it. Then post that file here.

More info would be nice for us to help you on this. Also, what country are you in? (Sometimes we forget that many players in CoH are not in the US)
1 GB to 2GB can make a modest difference, but don't expect a hot rod. I would assume you are running Windows XP or Linux? Please let us know, we can't mind read.

wow this is a ***** to post keeps giving me error using to many *^08 characters so I hope thats all you need.
OK i opened my computer to check the motherboard hopefully this is right.
CT:P AAHD 4B U9 VD DXV
PN:5189-0462 REV:A01
power supply 100-127v- 6A
200-240v- 3A
output max 250v
The power supply has a switch on the back to go between the two.
OK i opened my computer to check the motherboard hopefully this is right.

Okay, found your system. Compaq Presario SR5310F.
According to my research, the default power supply is a dinky 250W unit.
Translation: You would NEED to buy a new power supply.
Here's my suggestion, IF the stuff is available in your area (not sure where you're located at in the world).
Antec High Current Gamer 520W.
For once, Newegg doesn't have decent documentation of the various power connectors. Luckily Antec's manual does.
Here's the important ones:
- 20+4 Pin connector (Your main power connector to the board)
- 4+4 pin ATX-12V connector Provides additional power to the 12V rail on newer ATX boards. Connectors are 4, 6, and 8 pin variants. You can handle them all.
- Dual 6+2 pin PCI-E connectors. Some PCI-E video cards require 1-2 PCI-E connectors. Some will be 6-pin, some will be 8-pin. This PSU will do either or.
My suggestion would be the Radeon 6770.
With a bit of stretching you MIGHT be able to get a 6850 (mail-in rebates, money left over from), but you're running into problems with your CPU being able to keep the graphics card properly busy and your performance plateaus out and isn't really any better than a 6770.
You could probably wangle a GTX 460. But the performance difference isn't really worth the price increase.
Sorry, tried to provide links, but the forum is choking like a 6-pack a day smoker living downwind from a forest fire.
ok for the power supply I found this

and the video card I found this

What do you guys think? A-OK?

The link from the AMD site shows Newegg as the cheapest.
ok cool guys tyvm everyone.
Damn forum ate my post.
First, according to the DxDiag output you have 2GB of RAM. That's good. What's bad is your system only has 2 RAM slots so I'm guessing they are both filled. Also the motherboard itself can't handle more than 2GB of memory (limitation of the Intel 945GC chipset). Sorry, no memory upgrade path for you but you may be able to get back the 256MB the integrated graphics is stealing from main memory. It's better than nothing.
Now due to the fact it's an Compaq/HP case, I wouldn't have recommended the Antec HCG-520 power supply because of it's size, which is 0.8" longer than the "standard" dimensions for a PC power supply. No big deal if you are building yourself or if the case was even a standard microATX sized case but prebuilt HP/Dell/Compaq PCs seem to have cases chosen not for convenience of assembly but by how many can fit in a shipping container.
I would recommend either the Antec Earthwatts EA-430D (430 watts) or EA-500D (500 watts) power supply as they are standard size. Right now the EA-500D is a bit cheaper than the EA-430D but prices change frequently at NewEgg. Either are enough for the video card that Hyper recommended.
As for the video card be aware that the HD 6770 is identical to the HD 5770 except in name. When AMD upgraded their high and very high power video cards to the 6000 series GPU chp, they didn't upgrade the mid level series chip at all and simply renamed the existing cards. Reason I'm pointing this out is you may be able to find HD 5770 cards for less than the HD 6770.
Your limiting factor after upgrading the video is the CPU. 1.6GHz Dual Core E2140 in the big picture a rather modest CPU of the Core 2 family and that's being kind. At least it's better than most Pentium Ds. Also due to the age of the system and the list of compatible CPUs on the above linked motherboard page, you will have a tough time finding an upgrade.

Well, they were cheaper when places like NewEgg were flushing out all the old inventory. Now they are the same if you can find them at all. $100 after rebate isn't bad for a card that can do UM at the lower settings.
