Fortunata builds: give some advice, have a cookie

I have a build question for some of the builders out there. I am something of a perfectionist and while I understand that there is no “best” in the game, I believe there is a “best you’re going to get” given play style and mechanics and operating space. I am having a hard time finding it, making it, or recognizing it.

I don’t mind settling for pretty darn good and taking some slight losses for gain elsewhere. I have some builds that I am toying with using but I am not sure if they will really do what I want or if my power choice and slotting is erroneous. Since many of you have actually played these powers (and I have not) I thought that I might have the advantage of your wheels instead of inventing one of my own.

Criteria –

I want to survive. I would like to live longer than the target or at least be able to get away. Nothing turns me off an experience more than going in and getting summarily executed. So I am assuming perma-Mind Link for all of builds and any that you might suggest, Usually that means perma-hasten as well.

RP is a factor. Don’t look at me like that. Mainly this means hover and fly. Everything else I can make work somehow, but I need hover and fly. Everyone and their brother uses combat jumping, so I usually put hover there. I understand that there is an endurance hit for it but I will deal with that in walking time and Cardio later if I need it.

Damage and/or control are not insignificant. Just because this is third on the list doesn’t mean I am willing to throw it out the window. I want to do damage too. Not meaning to sound to diva about it but I want to have a significance to the team as well as be able to stomp around solo.

Cost, oh my god the cost. Can’t be avoided. The good sets cost a lot. That’s just the way the game works, I get it. But if you spot a set that I have chosen that could just as well be a cheaper one. Feel free to pipe up.

I don’t PVP. Just, no. It will never happen. So all the builds are built for PvE.

Following I will post the builds I am looking at and some notes about how I expect them to work, that’s where things get pretty murky for me.

Here we have a multipurpose build. I guess it’s alright. With 1 +117% (with aim) to hit and 195% recharge it cover those bases. Hover, Flight, check.

It looks a little light in the damage department though, no tornado, no scream, no tk blast, no dart burst (so no –regen).

I may have a lot of versatility but am I really going to miss all those attacks? I feel a little naked without lots of shiny buttons with which to threaten mobs.

Here is one built around the confuse mechanic. +268% recharge and cappy defenses with Mind Link.

I could likely toss out super speed but it is muling some defense bonuses so I left it in place.

I managed to crowbar Gloom in but the slotting is just miserable single slot making it hardly worth the effort.

Will the two confuse mechanic pay off? Do they stack? Is there extra reliability in having two, three if you count the unique (which wont happen for quite some time).

I have some attacks here as well including Dart burst for those regen heavy targets. But am I wasting time on the confuse mechanic?

I admit this one is a favorite of mine so far if the confusion happen additively.

General: I've noticed that after getting to 50 and slotting all the IOs I want, I don't use Aim any more. You could replace that with a power you want, maybe one of those AoE you're missing.

Other general commentary: as long as Mind Link is perma, you're fine. Double stacked Assault and Maneuvers is good too, but not totally required imo, if you have some other reason for not taking those powers.

I'm curious about this. How do you justify Flight on a "normal" character? I use super speed. According to the CoH lore, Synapse was given his speed powers in a cruel experiment by the Crey corporation.

I figure I got my super speed the same way. Arachnos has been contracting with Crey to enhance its agents for a while now. I have cybernetic implants from Crey that are safer and cheaper but not as powerful as Synapse's that let me move and run much faster than normal. It's a minor sort of RP but I'm pleased with it.

Damage and/or control are not insignificant.
The build below has no problems with End and uses Musculature and double stacked Assault. Final damage bonus on say Subdue is around 152%. It's pretty sweet, and I don't even have the Tier 4 yet. Note the slotting in Health/Stamina.

Quote:
Cost, oh my god the cost.
This build is pretty cheap and was done mostly with Tips. I bought the one purple set and any of the cheaper IO sets, but most of it was plowing through Tip mission. With Mask Presence, Super Speed and Confuse this is pretty easy solo. I ghost most of them.

OK here's my build.

I'm using Aim here, but please substitute something else. Recall Friend is a possibility--ghost missions then 'port in a team. If you must have Hover/Fly, consider removing Aim and say Psy Tornado (the weakest AoE, imo) and adding H/F.

Note that the 98% recharge is before Hasten. I actually have about 168% recharge, enough to perma both Hasten and Mind Link. The +45% Accuracy is a nice bonus too.

Note that is is deliberately a control heavy, ranged, team build. I made no attempt to fit melee powers in this build. Maybe next one...

I have a lvl 50 fortunata with 2 builds.
1 widow
2 fortunata

First off this is my favorite toon so far.
I love the versatility and effectiveness.
I have some thoughts for you based on my play experience.

I dont have lots of money but my toon is almost at a perm for mindlink.
I dont seem to have any problems with it not being perm.
my base recharge is +98% with haste its +168%.

I have 2 main ranged attacks and they are mental blast and subdue
both slotted with a full set of thunderstrike.
I love using pychic wail and have it slotted with a full set of obliteration.
This nuke like power has a fast recharge and no negatives.
I usually back it up with either my void incarnate power or ion blast depending on my mood.
(void is easier to use like this)

I use pychic scream and dark obliteration(mastery) for extra aoe ranged dmg.
I tried the poisondart but hated the time delay to rectract the dart.
so it got axed on my last respec.

my recharge lets me use my 2 single target ranged attacks without stopping. Very nice. (mental blast & subdue)
I would slot foresight with as much def bonus as you can seeing how it boosts your toon in melee, ranged, and aoe.
Im running with all def powers activated at:
ranged def- 76
melee-67
aoe-52

this helps a lot on the incarnate missions seeing how I dont have any dmg resist to speak of.
Also on cimm missions the swords do debuff defense so having more the the softcap does seem to help.

I use dominate a lot against healers and mez opponents.
I use total domination very little but i do have it.
I use confuse often and have a full set of mailase's illusions.
My favorite power though is Aura of Confusion and I have a full set of
Coersive Persuasion.
This power rocks when your in over your head and when a boss isnt affected I use confuse a couple times to stack the confusion and get him killin his own troops.
My second favorite power is scramble thoughts.
When a boss cant be dominated he can be stunned.
I have a full set of stupefy in it and love it.
In my dominate and total domination i put a set of 4 basiliks gaze in each.
Seems to work nicely.
I did take soul tentacles and have just 1 basic lvl 50 immobilize in it.
My accuracy is so high and my global recharge good enough that it still very usable.
I use it a lot on the baf runs stopping the escaping prisoners.
i also took darkest night and just run 2 lvl 50 endurance in it.
I love the -16% strength on the target and all around him and the base -8% is like boosting your def even when your capped.

hehe not the first time I pulled that trick on my toons.

I also found I needed to put a stealth proc in sprint for mask presence to be effective. without it I was being seen all the time.
With it Im just as good as invisible but can attack without turning anything off. (you do become visible though while attacking)
I hope this helps you on your build.
you seem to have more money to spend so I would encourge you to do so.
Oh yea one more thing. I never used 5 lotg 7.5 before on a toon until I made this one.
I discovered that you can have 5 of those and still slot more 7.5 recharge bonuses from other sets. Like I did with basilisk gaze.
I have 5- 7.5 recharge bonuses on my fort and they all work.

Just thought I would mention it in case you didnt know.

Hope this helps you out.
I love playing my fortunata and very rarely die.

have fun!
Moonbeem

The short answer is that I lie like a lion skin rug.

The concept for this is not one of an actual Fortunata but an alien entity pressed into service. Indeed if we are getting down and RP-like with it, it is an alien entity beamed from its home into the body of an existing soldier changing him in ways untold while still conforming to the natural typing as the alien and its abilities are perfectly normal for its existence.

If that sounds overly Kheldian I will just beg forgiveness and plead the fifth. It is a concept I have been kicking around. Ancient alien civilization advanced enough to have produced its own gods and for safe keeping establishing living sepulchers for them on other planets, in other dimensions, bloodlines designed to provide habitable vessels. When the time comes and their civilization meets its cataclysmic end they send these gods forth, flinging them into the void to their new homes, new bodies to carry on their stewardship of the universe as a whole. I see it as faintly green lanternesque, without the green . . . or the lantern.

That’s part of the story anywhoo

I am used to speed ghosting missions on a Illusion controller so that wont be anything new to me and I expect that I will be doing plenty of soloing due to the somewhat compressed time commitment I can offer the game.

It is worth pointing out though that I do plan to use my second build for a Night Widow build expressly to cover any contingencies that this build might have trouble handling. Perhaps if the blast-troller can’t beat it the scrap-stalker can, that sort of philosophy.

I am quite enamored of the Fortunata play model though, so I am starting with this one.

Thanks much for your build Gameboy1234. I certainly appreciate it along with your suggestions.

A Fortunata, which is a Natural origin character, has access to telekinetic and psychic powers. Therefore, it's telekinetic hover and telekinetic flight. Justified and done.

Thanks Renardine, your right, that is a great collection of material. I will have to peruse and compile some thoughts on that. It looks like an interesting build though.

Your welcome, I hope I've given you a couple of ideas at least.

Don't forget we get a third build now, once you get your Alpha slot. Myself, I was thinking of adding a more conventional pre-Incarnate Fort build, with Aid Self and Gloom and a To-Hit debuf, just for free play if I wanted to go that route. (My current build above is soft capped but not for incarnate trials. I use Diamagnetic Interface to add some To-Hit debuff to all my attacks to help make up for this.)

This is my current Fort build. I like this build because it has singe target attacks for when I am soloing, PBAoE and Targeted AoE's for big teams, buff, debuff, Immob, and a pet for additional damage. I built my for to have a little of everything to fill the void on a team to balance it out. Some things I like to point out is +75% Enhancement(Accuracy)
+81.3% Enhancement(RechargeTime), and +325.3 HP (30.4%) HitPoints. Having a perma 1610hp is nice.

And this is my prototype Forttroller build, but I focused on Control by picking up Total Dominate, Aura of Confusion and lowered the recharge to 68 seconds each, but in the process I lost 20 hp and had to drop psi scream and aid self. My builds are kind of expensive, but it gives me a goal to work toward.

Here's my Fort's current build, she's probably my favourite character. Obviously it's melee focused, in order to take advantage of those claw attacks, which are much better than the ranged blasts. As such, it's got excellent single target damage, solid AoE and good ST control. There isn't much on the AoE control side, but to be honest, Forts aren't great at that anyway, so it's no big loss. Survivability is pretty much as good as you're gonna get, with softcapped def to all positions with perma ML and Aid Self.

It did cost a lot to finish, particularly with the LotGs, but I had cheaper things in there to begin with and worked my way up, and it was still great fun.

Travel for me is CJ+NR, so you'll have to tweak it a bit, but CJ can easily be swapped for Hover, then maybe Vengeance or one of the Assaults for fly, along with a bit of reordering so you get them early.

I am not so sure if claw attacks are simply "better" than range attacks. Sure, claw has better dps but range itself has a big advantage. The dps you lose by chasing the targets (running, knocked back), range attack already hits the target. Hover + range also gives you way more protection than all the defense you can have.

Dominate and Gloom are two of the best range attacks in the game. If you stick in procs, they are even better. I consider Dominate one of the best range attacks because it is a sure mag 3 hold that does more damage than a regular hold. And Chance for smashing from purple set is a whole lot cheaper than chance for negative from range purple set.

Lunge has one of the highest dpa in the game for sure. Follow-Up build with claw does a lot of damage but I won't say it is simply better. If your goal is to take down something that doesn't move (like Pylon), then yeah, claw will do more damage.

PS: If you want to focus mainly on melee, then I will definitely stick Tough in the build. Tough determines whether you die in one hit or not. :P

What's left is to normalize all Assassin Strikes and improve Stalker's old sets (Claw, MA and EM)! You don't need to bring back the missing PbAoE attack. You just need to make the existing ones better! For example, make Slice a WIDER and LONGER cone.

I've never really bought the "range is an advantage" in CoH. It takes, what, half a second to jump into the mobs, I don't find I have to chase around much unless I'm on a team with some idiot with knockback (Dominate stops any runners in their tracks) and I'm survivable enough as it is. So I'll take pure damage any day.

Dominate is indeed great - hence why I've taken it - and I would've like to put Gloom in there too, but I didn't really have the slots.

It's interesting to note that you didn't mention any of the straight up Fort blasts (only a control and a PPP power)....

Tried it, didn't notice much difference. Might squeeze it back in instead of Assault if the reports of it no longer having a prequisite in I21 are correct.

Just to note, I did have a ranged based fort. The melee version was originally just playing about with my second build, but I actually found it to be both much more effective and fun to play so I scrapped the original build and focused on the melee one.
