Sudden Debilitating Lag

Posted

I've been running farms in Atlas's AE (on just-not-quite Ultra Mode) all yesterday. All was good and I went to bed. I woke up to farm again and I get to the first mob and just faceplant because of the lag. I tried again with graphics turned almost completely off and nothing changed. My roommate plays with me and he had to tell me that I had died about a minute before I saw it locally. His internet is having no problems. I tried uninstalling CoH, reinstalling, installing the latest drivers, deactivating my fire walls, virus protection, etc. Nothing works and I didn't change a thing since last night. I did notice that whenever it lags I open the task manager and it'll be using anywhere from 2 - 3gigs of RAM. Probably shouldn't be that high. I've heard about the launcher having a leak, so I close that as soon as I can and it doesn't help. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not going to touch the other stuff, as I am not as familiar with HijackThis logs as I would like to be.

But this is the first post I have seen mentioning a roommate, and I take it from the statement about his internet not having problems that means you are sharing his internet?

Can you verify that your access to the internet isn't limited or throttled for any reason? Do you still lag this bad when your are the only one online at your location?

If you do not have any problems when you are the only one online, then it is either his ISP, or the modem, or the router (I am assuming you are going through a router).

If you are still having problems even when you are the only one online, ask your roommate if he messed with any modem or router settings recently. He might have adjusted QoL settings that are limiting your access. (I'll not speculate on if this was intentional, as a joke or otherwise. ;-) )

As a shot in the dark suggestion, I would say reboot the modem and router if you can. It kind of goes without saying that this will interrupt internet usage, so only do it when everyone is aware the internet will stop working for a while.

If you are still having problems, there is one other thing I can think of besides the help others should be able to give you from your log posts. I'll check back and see if you need it. (It is one of those things that is not a good idea if it is unneeded, so I won't mention until it might be needed.)

A few things stand out. According to your CoH Helper report, it is using the Intel graphics chipset. But your HiJackThis log shows nVidia graphics processes running in the Services. I'd suspect that your laptop is using one of the graphics card switching mechanisms that seems to be fairly common of late. Most likely it has switched to the Intel chip instead of the nVidia chip it should be using for the game. There should be a method to disable the graphics switching and specify which to use.

The other thing I notice is the Intel PROSet Wireless entries. Are you running this using wireless or do you have a wired ethernet connection to your router or modem? If it is wireless, you could be getting interference. Try connecting it with ethernet instead and see if the conditions continue.

Of course, it could be a combination of the graphics issues and wireless as well, or possibly something else. But those two areas are where I'd start looking if it were a computer on my workbench that I was working on.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

A: I'm sure there probably is but I don't know how and google most likely does. Which one should I specify to use? I would guess the nVidia chipset.

A: I don't have an ethernet cable handy (using wireless, obviously) but I suspect that this isn't the cause. It was working fine with both of us side-by-side last night and he went to sleep before I did and I woke up before him so he didn't change anything...

But those two areas are where I'd start looking if it were a computer on my workbench that I was working on.

Thanks guys. I'm gonna try to figure some of this out. And I'm running wireless about 5 feet away from the router/modem and no one else in the apartment is having troubles with the internet.

Is your roommate also using wireless?

If not:

If you do not have a cable handy, can you think of anything that might happen at the same times you lag?

Cordless phones ringing, sometime cellular phones ringing, and microwaves are the common culprits. Are you close enough to neighbors where their use of these things might be occurring? (If you are in an apartment, it is very likely. If a house, not so much but it depends on if you are at an outside wall and how close your neighbors are.)

Also, you could borrow your roommates cable to verify it isn't the wireless.

Roomie is using the same wireless as I am, on the same farm with me, and not lagging. He's performing as well as I was yesterday. And the only thing that happens differently is that there's more mobs on the screen and CoH starts to use 3gigs of ram

Edit: I just did a BAF and Lambda, with no lag whatsoever. I figured something may have fixed itself so I tried the Crey's Fire Farm and I lagged till there were only 3 mobs left standing around me (I couldn't see what was going on because it was a still frame, but I clicked my powers as if I could and it seemed to mostly work). The less mobs that are actively moving in my field of vision and attacking (it looks to be) the less lag I have. I just don't understand what caused the sudden onset of this disease.

That suggests to me you aren't getting wireless interference.

Do you have Windows Update set to automatically download and install updates?

If so, check your update history (Windows Start button > Windows Update > Review Update History) and look if it installed a video driver update during the night before the lagging started.
I'm not familiar with the Crey's Fire Farm, but if it has a bunch of fire effects, it might be a video driver issue.
If you find the video driver was updated, you might want to try rolling back the driver version to the previous one.

I got tired of being helpless in this issue, so I just looked up how to do a roll-back to a few days ago without using their dinky tool (use F4 when restarting). It showed me that Windows did indeed install an update at 4AM. It was 3 of the "HIGHLY CRITICAL" updates that windows seems to roll out each week or so. It fixed the problem completely. Thanks for all the help everybody!

I just don't know which one it was that had ended up messing with my machine. And do you think there's a way I could safely download it it now, or what?

Oh... That stinks. Not that you fixed the problem. But that is was a Windows update.

Do you have a listing of which ones were installed?

For the handful of systems I've explored, video drivers are "Recommended" updates only.
If it was a "Critical" update, it might actually be a Windows component that is gumming things up. Or, your particular drivers were considered critical.

As for if you can download it... I would say it depends on if you can suffer the lag. If it is "Critical," odds are you could really use the update. But at the same time it is likely to cause the lag again. It falls into one of those "lesser of two evils" category that others can't really answer for you.

If you could track down and list the updates, I'd like to know what they were. And I might be able to give you further advice on the issue.

Well some of the .NET patches will later kick off a series of compiles when the OS believes the system isn't that busy.

I have updates on my system set to notify only. This way I choose when they download and install and I'm aware that that .NET patches do this secondary compile step so I apply the update before I catch up on my shows.

I'd tell you to move to a Mac, but the Mac version of this game is so highly unstable as to be laughable. I do, however, read every thread on "lag" since on the Mac version "debilitating lag" usually happens immediately before the client crashes the whole machine.

Congrats on finding your particular culprit, however.
