Energy Melee/Dark Armor Brute Build

So, I've been toying with Mid's and IO sets looking for something to salvage my DA brute. Im running plain invention IOs currently, and the build falls flat on it's face against anything +3 or +4 which is leaving pantsed while running the trials to get incarnate abilities. Forget even attempting to tank or pull an AV. I can't even handle even con Elite Bosses without 4 stacking Purple Inspirations. (Well, I can if a defender/corr actually buffs me first, but I find that almost never happens)

The two biggest threats currently I seem to have are energy damage, and anything smart enough to use ranged attacks and get out of Dark Regen range. With my new Rare Cardiac, my resists to Smash Lethal seem to have picked up enough to the point that they are not so dangerous.

Interesting that you went for range defense. However I think you would be better off sticking to typed defense as most others do with resist sets. S/L defense will cover a majority of attacks as there are few pure exotic range attacks and even fewer pure exotic melee attacks. Additionally, DR needs some ACC.

Using Mako's Bite is definitely not the most efficient way to slot for Energy defense bonuses, and in the build you've posted you have six sets slotted, so you're not getting the benefit of one of them anyway.

As nice as Energy defense is for a DA character, S/L is even better since it will protect you from a much greater percentage of attacks. I'd aim for 32.5 def to both S/L and E/NE if possible, which will put you within a small purple of soft-capping to something like 85% of the attacks you'll face.

Also, Op Gloom would be a good choice for a EM build since the stuns will stack and will affect all foes up to Boss level. Op Gloom is also very endurance-light, which is a big advantage over Cloak of Fear.

Some other issues:

You don't want to six-slot attacks with Eradication since it's very low in end reduction. Use 3-4 Eradication and one or two slots from another set like Cleaving Blow, Multi Strike or Scirocco's Dervish.

A full set of Numina's is a very poor choice for Dark Regen. The E/NE def bonus is relatively small, it has NO ACCURACY (a very big problem) and you're wasting the expensive regen/recovery unique. In a click power it will only be active when the power is activated; you need to put it in Health or PP instead. If you need Energy defense, I'd three-slot Eradication for the E/NE def bonus, then finish out the slotting with 3 IOs from a Heal or Acc Heal set, including the Theft of Essence +End. Alternatively, slot with a combination of Heal and Acc Heal sets to max out accuracy, end reduction and recharge--Heal is a lesser concern since Dark Regen can heal to full with a single foe in range.

Cloak of Darkness is overslotted--there's no need for a fifth slot, it's end cost is actually lower than that of Weave.

Cloak of Fear is underslotted for end reduction, and Death Shroud is ridiculously underslotted, especially for end reduction. They should each get at least 50-60% end reduction.

Focused Accuracy is a huge end hog, I'd drop it and get something more useful like Op Gloom or Maneuvers. If you want the additional ToHit, slot the Kismet +Acc in one of your defense powers.

Here's what I would do with your build; S/L/E/NE are above 32% and I think you'll find end usage to be much more manageable. I really don't know how you'd run Death Shroud and attack with the posted build without having to constantly fight your blue bar.

Thanks for the info, wasn't aware that 5 sets was the max for a set. Aside from the plain invention IOs, (which let me make SOs in the mid 30's and never have to worry about slotting again) I did not adapt well to the IO system at all, and contrary to the tips and statements, it's becoming obvious they're designing new content to take it into account. I'll play with this build in Mids and see if there's any other changes I might want to make. The main reason I jumped on Makos was the energy defense and the damage boosting.

I believe he meant to say "more than one foe." Dark Regen is pretty much the best heal in the game. It's a higher base value than things like Healing Flames or Energize, but the real beauty is that it can heal multiple times in one use. When you can hit more than one foe, you can pretty much guarantee that you're healing to full.

Actually, in the posted build you had *two* 3.75% E/NE def bonuses going to waste; the bonus in the Numina's set counts too, since it has the same bonus.

Personally, I don't think set damage bonuses are worth deliberately slotting for, especially for a Brute. The additional damage you'll get from Fury is far more significant than a few 3% set bonuses.

You're right, I mis-stated. Completely unslotted for Heal, Brute DR will heal 1/3 of your HPs with one foe in range, slotted as I did in the build I posted, it's just over 50%.

What I meant is that in typical situations, i.e., you don't wait until you're at 10% HP to hit DR, modest Heal slotting is sufficient to heal you back to full with one foe in range. Fortunately, the odds are pretty good that if you're in dire straits HP-wise, you'll be facing more than one foe.

Just out of curiosity, do you have accuracy slotted in DR in your current build? It really is critical to have it well-slotted for accuracy; I found that out the hard way against a bunch of CoT ghosts. Having lots of targets doesn't help much if you can't hit any of them.

I have two level 50 Accuracy IOs, two l50 Endurance Reduction IOs, two l50 Recharge IOs. So all three stats aren't quite capped, but they're close.
