an ice armor/ tank is actually very easy to run with just SOs and is fairly good with most content
Dark/Inv or Dark/SR scrapper is also very easy and both are good and cheap.
If you like more ranged types, either plant/ or earth/ primary and either /earth or /fire secondary on a dominator are absolutely a blast.
Then there is the traditional WP/SS tank or SS/WP brute. Lots of smash, lots of fun.
Claws/WP brute is a bit like a someone turned the energizer bunny into a cyborg buzzsaw and turned it loose.
If you have access to the villain epics, both of them (soldier and widow) are pretty awesome.
My personal recommendation though would be the plant/fire dominator or the claws/WP brute.

I have a Dark/wp brute I made for thematics, Claws always scarred me off because of the one million and a half wolverine varients. Might have to try it now. I have also hear a lot of good things about plant fire dominator...Just made a Spines/regen scrapper and find it....odd. Everything seems to take longer to do than to recharge. (She was a personal challenge, i wanted to make something that didn't look absolutley stupid with the spines sticking out)
Masterminds tend to strike a pretty good balance between soloability and team utility.
MMs are always good fun. I'm not much experienced with brutes, but the few I've had were great for don't-break-a-sweat solo work as well.

For all the talk about purpled out warshades, they can be incredible on SOs alone, and amazingly better with just a modest budget.

Willpower is a great set for running on SOs alone. I'd stick with that. ^_^

I have been playing COX every onc in awhile since launch. Mostly I like building random toons and then forget about them. Now I really want to experience the game. I am looking for something fun and solo friendly. I dont care about uber 50 builds with enhancements that would bankrupt most 3rd world countries. Something fun and self reliant. Something I can finally see the game with instead of just the starting zones.
