Flight Charm

I love the craftable jetpacks. They are a great way of nabbing a functional travel power during low levels and great for higher level toons who took SS SJ or TP to have an easier method of navigating difficult zones i.e. Grandville, Shadow Shard etc.

However, as great as it is in functionality, its limited in concept. Sometimes I don't want my magic or mutant characters wearing a whopping great jetpack while flying. So how about Flight Charm? It would be functionally identical to the craftable jetpack, but without the pack as an alternate flight recipe more in line with magic or mutation (or even some natural) themed characters.

I have been wanting this for a while now.

I find it very incongruous to have my Magic themed and origined characters sprout this mechanical object from their backs and in a burst of chemical flame go zipping off.

I've wished for a broom for some, but any not-blatantly-technical flight method for the early levels would do.

I'm not against the idea, here... all for it, actually. We're just looking at alternate graphics, after all -

But why should this bug you any more than them getting on the train to go between zones? Or (yeah, can't do this in game, but work with me) getting into a car to get to the store? Magic *themed,* after all, doesn't need to mean "can't touch anything mechanical at all."

I RP a fair bit, but just don't "get" that. *shrug*

Well, a temporary travel power that doesn't have any technological bits in it wouldn't be all that hard to make, I think. Besides, there are multiple ways of traveling between zones that don't rely on ferries or trams; the Day Trader/Marketeer teleporter, Ouroboros, Supergroup portals, the Mac Edition mission teleporter and the Pocket D VIP teleporter ...

Anyway! Yeah, sign me on for this, too. We've been seeing a lot of new craftable temporary powers of late, and a "charm" that works like a Jet Pack would be great for the non-tech savvy characters.

Brooms would be an interesting idea, too, but I imagine that'd take a considerable amount of doing to get it to look right.

It does bug me that I have to use the train or ferry to get between zones. I'd love to have an interzone travel power, perhaps even as a tier 5 in the pools. But if such a thing were implemented it would require a significant portion of dev time and resources. Flight Charm conversely would be little more than a copy/paste from existing powers and effects and perhaps an hour or so (pure guesswork) to whip up some art and write the recipe info.

With regard to "can't touch anything mechanical", consider this; I have a DA brute who, with CoD and stealth sprint toggled, looks like a big ball of black fluff. This represents his semi-tangible state, which concept-wise should be able to fly. Though because I took Leaping, he can't fly without a jetpack. Now imagine how incongruous a ball of black fluff flying about with a jetpack looks.

*chuckle* OK, I can see that.

I know we have jet/rocket boots, but what about Hermes winged boots? Brooms, boards and carpets would all rock as well.

Winged boots are already a craftable costume piece, plus they add a motion trail based on the primary colour of the boots.

Brooms would be more of an issue than the others, I think, for much the same "model manipulation" issues as motorcycles - they'd have to make a fair bit of assumption about how to position your character, size and the like, and there's the (yes, I'm paraphrasing the vehicle copypasta) question of "what do you do about power usage?"

Thats great, I have never encountered any in game that I can recall, but I have a toon they would be perfect for, thanks!

ooh... Could use the Steam Jump's flying/jumping pose coupled with some sort of glowing talisman/amulet/tchotchke in the hand or maybe some sort of noticeably glowing amulet/necklace/legacy chain neck piece/other assorted bling on the chest during flight mode.

There's usually a ton of the recipes for cheap in the auction house. Plus, unlike most other recipes, it actually comes with a couple of styles of winged boots.

It's a concept thing, and regrettably this game doesn't support concept all that well.

Some characters could be mixed magic and tech, others are pure (in my concepts). Some characters it doesn't bother me on, other's it's "Hey I do everything through magic, it's my MO".

It's not THAT big a deal, but it'd be a nice QoL improvement.

See here for pics of the styles. Also, there are wings on the Hellenic Sandals, but I forget whether they flap when moving.

TBH I don't see why a character that refuses to use tech would move to Paragon City, where all transportation between neighborhoods is high-tech, crime fighting is done via police scanner and your ID is stored and tracked in an electronic database. I'm all for people playing what they want to play, but I don't really get how you could roleplay a character that doesn't fit into the world at all.

There's a major difference between a character who prefers using arcane skills over personal technological gadgets, and a person with a "simple living" lifestyle that abhors all forms of technology.

I'm actually kind of surprised there's people who are opposed to more thematically arcane stuff, though. City of Heroes already has a lot of arcane equivalents to technological stuff. Just look at Supergroup bases; all the major features have Arcane and Tech flavors.
