Character slots gone?

Historically speaking, yes.
My understanding is that the number of extra slots you have available is somehow kept store-side. So if it can't talk to the store it can't know how many slots you have available. If you have characters in extra slots beyond the basic you're ok to play them, but you just can't create new ones.
It's annoying to be sure, but it does happen and you get you slots back when communication is restored.

Mine is scarier. When I tried to log into the game ten minutes ago, ALL my characters were gone. I had my unapplied extra slots available, but no alts, just "create characters" empty slots. Should I start screaming in agony?

Is it possible that you made a toon on Freedom for last nights badge event. Delete the toon after the event and didn't log back in until today? That would put Freedom at the top of the server list and if you had no other toons on that server the select screen would be empty. This would be the most benign answer to your issue.
I can also envision the situation where a GF that doesn't like you spending so much time on a game has gone through and deleted all your toons but I'd rather not think about something like that happeing

Actually nothing that evil (though you almost had me there) - it just appears that the last patch caused the EU version of the game to switch around the names of the servers. My toons are fine and accounted for, they are just on the server "COHworldServer_14". Go figure. And of course, no notice anywhere of this issue - I had to dig in the European boards to find the info.

Is this connected to the 'sorry we cannot connect to the ncsoft store at this time' error?
