Problem with latest patch!

'Access to the path 'C:\Program Files (x86)\NCsoft\City of Heroes\crashrpt.dll' is denied'.

After I press 'repair', it gives me this error: 'Access to the path is denied'.

What on earth does this mean, and how can I fix it?

And if it isn't an admin issue. I'd also make sure you don't have the game running in background or something. That also sounds like it may be trying to update a file that's locked. If no luck there, maybe also suggest a reboot just to force the files to unlock .

Same problem here, and I can confirm it's definitely a Windows 7 issue as my other computer running Windows XP has updated fine

I've tried repair, running the launcher as administrator, rebooting the computer and changing the file permissions on the crashpoint.dll file that seems to be at the centre of the 'permission denied' error, but still get the same problem.

I was at the end of the trial period and at the point of buying the full game as well... not sure I'll bother if the client is this unreliable

Probably not much help but Windows 7 is working fine for me.

Is it Windows 7 x64 in either or both cases? If so then it looks like the Updater problem has translated to the Launcher, though I'm not sure how to fix it in the latter case.

Same exact problem for me. I have Windows Vista, and tried running as administrator, to no avail.

Any suggestions?

Yes mine is Window 7 (x64)

No idea how that affects things or what previous problem you're referring to, but it does seem like a problem with the file permissions

It's an x64 issue that appears to affect Vista & 7, though I guess could affect XP too if more than 6 people ever installed XP x64. I thought it had gone with the switch to the Launcher, but apparently not.

With the updater I found I had to copy the affected files out of the game directory, run the updater from said temporary location and then move them back, but in that instance it was throwing access denieds on the updater executable itself rather than an ancillary file, so I'm not sure that would help here. What appeared to be happening was that when you launched the updater, it was locking the file, so it was unable to access it to update - I'm guessing something similar is happening here.

If anyone is au fait with Process Monitor then it would be useful to see if that sheds any light on it (I'm not able to easily replicate the issue myself otherwise I'd do it).

Another option is to use Process Explorer to see what has a lock on that .dll file when it throws the error (Do a Ctrl+F and search for the crashrpt.dll).

I agree with Leandro, it sounds like an admin rights issue.

Personally, I installed CoH to a non-default directory outside of the regular Program Files directory, so I never have to deal with this. There's no reason for it to be in the Program Files directory anyway, especially since things like savable costumes and Mission Architect files came into being.

If it's the same issue as the updater one - and it appears identical - then it's not an admin rights issue.

What was the updater issue and how was it solved? I don't want to have to mess about with techy stuff every time the game is patched

The Updater issue affects x64 versions of windows and appears to be caused by the updater or some associated process locking the files that it needs to update, causing an Access Denied error. It could be worked around by moving the updater + cityofheroes executables to a temporary directory and running them from there; once the update was complete you could move them back and you'd be good to go.

In the case of the Launcher, it doesn't look like it's as simple to fix and I haven't yet been able to replicate the problem in order to establish what's causing it.

Quite, if it's locking a dll it shouldn't... That just sucks. I will chime in with mild helpfulness, I am running on win7x64, without a problem.

Here it is:

You have to turn off User Account Control (In Vista its in the control panel), restart, run the launcher, let it patch, and then you can turn on UAC again. That way, it lets you patch, and after wards, you can turn on the UAC again, and there are no problems!

Going to E-Mail tech support now so they can let people know of this fix.
Worked out perfectly for me! Thanks to all!

Thanks Leandro, that was a good link and the solution applies to Windows 7 x64 systems.

In Control Panel > User Account Control you have to put the slider all the way down to 'never notify', and restart your system. The patch will then properly apply and the game sucessfully launches.
