Started happening last night. Played Wednesday no problem. No system changes since then.

Indeed. It was likely your playerslot.txt or playernotes.txt file being corrupted. This has been an ongoing problem for some people since Issue 12 when the files were introduced. I'm sorry I didn't notice your post or I would have mentioned that before now. Glad you found the solution though.

As an added preventative, some of us have changed the properties of playerslot.txt to "read-only" (after making any necessary character position adjustments) to make sure it doesn't cause any more issues. Unfortunately doing the same thing with playernotes.txt makes the feature unusable, so many of us simply don't even use the feature. lol

Upon further testing, it was my playernotes.txt file that was corrupted. Which is annoying because I had a lot of really good, detailed notes dating back years.

Every blind inviter, every knave spamming racial and sexual slurs during Halloween door camping fights, every person kicked from a task force... ALL gone!

Tried copying and pasting the info into a new text file, crashes came back. Debating spending an idiot amount of time cutting entries until I can find the corrupt entry/the entry causing crashes.

Darn. I've been having this problem for a few days now -- client goes non-responsive after I select a server. Tried deleting the directory with my account name as described above, but no fix.


Fire Imps: Summon Fire Imps will now spawn one Imp. The Imp melee attack was never intended to do damage, and has been replaced with emotes. Your summoned Imp will now alternate between /em teabag, /em backflip, and /em getsome.

This is a problem that should be fixed on their end. I have many friends for which I have numerous repeat entries because I have a habit of running down the team list of TFs and checking everyone's global. There is no good reason why it should repeat names. That is a programming error.

Somehow my roommate fixed this problem. I have no idea quite exactly how, it involved a long complicated series of steps. But then when I logged in, I found all my settings had reverted to minimum graphics, and when I tried to increase them...client lockup. I try again this morning. Decide to start small. Menu, Player Info and....client lockup.

And all this for no apparent reason, mere weeks after a new video card and the recent stability improvements had led me to believe the long nightmare was finally over. But I should have known. Windows must die, x86 must die, and I think after seven years I'm finally done. I love this game, but the price of allowing Bill Gates and Andy Grove to take a runny dump on me every day for the last couple of decades has grown too high. City of Heroes is the last thing shackling me to this horrible world, and no matter how much I love this game, it's just not worth it.

Not sure how you were not able to move on before, since there is a Mac version, and several folks that are very nice about helping to get the game running on Linux .

Altho, Cuppa, you say you just got a new video card... wouldn't be an ATi card would it? Running the 11.5 drivers? If it is, save some time and move back to the 11.3 drivers.

Nope, it's an Nvidia. I'm certainly not going to run out and buy a Mac and start letting Steve Jobs take a runny dump on me while singing about how it's actually magical unicorn manure that'll solve all my problems if I just click Submit. As for Linux, I suppose it's theoretically possible to run CoH under wine and get mostly equal to possibly better than native results, and as long as it's not any WORSE than Windows I suppose I might give it a shot, but at this point the slightest bump in the road would get me to instantly bail without hesitation. No, better to ditch this ridiculous x86 monstrosity that's literally retarded computing progress for over thirty years, that infected the once-halfway decent Mac with its nonsense, that cripples even a somewhat-not-sucky OS like Linux. After banging your head long enough, you either keep whining about headaches, or you wise up. "The only way to win is not to play."

Bless your heart, CoH. You were the only graphical MUD that ever caught my fancy. I'll always love you, but the universe is clearly telling me it's time to move on.
