City of Heroes Retro, Part II

This was an interesting read. I thought these comments were interesting:

Nate "Second Measure"Birkholz, Lead Producer
"The winner from our first Fan Video Competition. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WF5lg41L11I"

1.Where are the other videos from this "competition" and when/what did this happen?

Vince "The Dark Watcher" D'Amelio, Principal Programmer
" I liked the original launch video from City of Villains[ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_bpYYzJwCA ]
It had a good fight scene and of course Synapse being tossed around (because it became something the players laughed about...)

2.Was there a thread about Synapse getting thrown around? I tried to search for it but I can only go back a few year. I really wish I could get the audio scripts and voice actor names for these videos. These are so fun!

Jesse "Ghost Falcon"Caceres, Business Manager
"The best PR-related event I ever attended was the City of Villains Launch party on Alcatraz in San Francisco. NCsoft invited press people from all over the world. Many of us spent weeks and days leading up to the event creating characters, setting up a local shard (Alcatraz does not have Internet access), and getting a stable build together. "
"At the end of the day, the island was closed for the exclusive use for City of Villains. One of the rooms was transformed into a demo area with a stage, and other cells/rooms were transformed into private PR meeting rooms. We had a woman dress up as Ghost Widow, and we had special lighting and fog machines set up to create an eerie atmosphere."

Vince "The Dark Watcher" D'Amelio, Principal Programmer

"Attending the press launch party for City of Villains on Alcatraz. We took over the dining hall of the prison and turned it into a secret base for Arachnos. We even had a costumed version of Ghost Widow escort the press into the prison and welcome them."

3.Does anyone have pics or links to pics from this Launch? This must of been awesome. Even now I still share content from this period to encourage people to the game.

Joe "Hero 1"Morrisey, Senior Designer
"I was working at Blizzard North at the time and we got a copy at work that I quickly 'borrowed'. I played it at home and at work for a number of hours. It was fun and my first real MMO experience. Regretfully, real life caught up with me."

4.What would compel Morrisey to leave Blizzard to come to Paragon? He could of been rich at Blizzard. Also, what did he mean with this statement, " Regretfully, real life caught up with me." He's still playing games, right? I mean he moved from one game company to another.

0) Black text, especially non-bold, is bad. Some of us use the "Villain" skin so it's black on shades of red.

1) I think all the finalists used to be hosted on the FTP site, but that's out of reach at the moment. Note linked video is 07. Try digging in the News forum.

2) Probably a victim of a forum purge, as that's from CoV release.

3) No clue.

4) Just because Blizzard is making money doesn't mean it's developers are raking it in. Plus, as long as you make enough, it's better to work on something you enjoy more anyway

1. When was the event? Was it held online or in person?
2. Doesn't answer my question. I wasn't here when these things happened. I saw the video but just curious about the comments made. I liked the video, why bash it? Snapse never seemed to be a major character to me. This video just confirmed it.
3. Still looking for pics.
4. You cannot answer this question. Blizzard has a very good story to game engine/flow, I'm just wondering what could lure someone away from that. Paragon's culture seems to be way laid back. I watch the ustream's and wonder if they ever do any work. I know about money and fun equation but marriage and responsibilities almost always supercede fun unless your single.

I assumed players made comments about it on the forums. Did the forum exist back then?

Yeah, I just skimmed your OP before I went to search the COH site's news archives. I didn't even register your youtube link until after I posted my reply. Too much tunnel vision.

Anyway, the players (well, more like the forumites) were making fun of Synapse because he's a blaster and the video confirmed the blaster stereotype by having him being defeated first.

The forum software was changed a few years ago. A lot of the old stuff didn't get transfered to the new forums.

They showed him early concept art for Desdemona.

I found an IGN article about the COV launch. They have a link to a small photo gallery in the article.

I also found a Cryptic video about the event.

Dunno about Gold Jacket, Grey Jacket, and Pink Hat. But the guy in the cape following them is Jack Statesman Emmert.

At 1:00 is Zeb Lord Recluse (the first) Cook.

At :25 is Sean Manticore Fish.

Any of you guys want to guess how much it cost to rent Alcatraz? also, how long was the party(1/2/3 days)? I used to live in California but left during the boom/bust of 2007. I wish I had stayed now with the tech recovery.

Payment
All fees must be paid by credit card only. (We can take the number over the phone.) If you do not have a credit card, contact the permit office prior to submitting your application. Paying your application fee does not guarantee that your project will get approved.

All permit applications require an application fee that is not-refundable. This amount can range from $50 to $1000. It goes towards your permit fee.

There are 4 fees: the application fee, the permit fee, the staffing fee, and "other" fees. Most fees are non-refundable.

Application fee:
$50 to $1000. Ask your event specialist for the exact fee. This is non-refundable and does not guarantee that you can have your event in the GGNRA.

Permit fee:
$175 to $10,000. Your application fee goes towards this cost.

Management fee:
$85/hour. This covers Park Ranger or US Park Police time. For large events, staffing time will be several hours.

Other fees:
If you want to sell items at your event, you must obtain a Commercial Use Authorization, which is an additional fee and has restrictions that you should know in advance. Inspection of your tent may require a Presidio Fire Department fee. Staking has an additional fee. When serving food, you will want to use the City of San Francisco's Health Inspector, and that is a separate fee. Your event specialist can discuss these details with you. Events at Crissy Fee have an additional fee, due to the high use of that area.

If a bond is required by the NPS, it must be paid with a money order a cashierÂ’s cheque. Bonds can be returned by direct deposit to the permit applicant only. Final payment cost will be determined after we receive your permit application, but we can discuss ballpark figures with you.

Insurance

All large events require a certificate of liability insurance in the amount of one million dollars. The three parties which must be named as additionally insured are: United States Government or United States of America, the National Park Service, and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area
The form should include this address: Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Office of Special Park Uses, Building 204, Fort Mason San Francisco, CA 94123

Forms may be faxed to the Office of Special Park Uses at 415-561-4305.
Failure to follow the regulations noted here may create a delay in issuing your permit.

Once your event has been approved, it may take several months to get your permit. In those cases, we can write you an email stating the approval in writing, so that you can begin the work of planning your event.
