Dark/Dark build questions

Hi,

I have 21 lvl Dark/Dark def and I've been looking at a build on Mids. In my late 20s I seem to hit a dry spot of good skills from my primary and secondary. I've filled it with Teleport, Maneuvers but I'm not wedded to those skills. I picked Teleport mostly because I've never had a toon with teleport and want to see how it works. I skipped Petrifying Gaze, but maybe that would be more useful.

What are good Pool Powers for Dark/Dark defender? Some extra DEF might be useful so Boxing / Weave perhaps? Is this better than Maneuvers /Tactics?

The Epic Pool isn't set in stone either, I might go with Power instead, but that is far in the future.

Here is the build. I don't know much about IO sets. The DOs and TOs are just symbolic of Stary's approximate enhancements. Some are level 20 IOs but Mids won't let me use level 20 IOs.

Post the datachunk along with the rest. There's a check box at the bottom left to do so when you export the data. That way we can load it into our own Mid's and be better able to see what's going on with your build.

Just looking at the powers, it looks like a good set of powers I would want. Hover is very good to take you out of melee range of nasties. You are testing out the travel powers and that is fine. I would not take fly and teleport both, but I would hold on to hover since Lag can do bad things to teleporters if they don't have hover.

You will want more slots in tactics. I like at least four, with 5 you can get a tohit set with recharge bonus. Speaking of which, if you drop fly, and with all the jet packs, why not, you can take hasten much earlier. I DO suggest this. This opens up a power for ... Oppressive Gloom! Dark pit, oppressive gloom and howling twilight make you ... STUNNING!

Slotting, like you alluded to, can be decided later as you become accustomed to powers. Twilight Grasp, Shadow Fall, Dark Servant definitely all get six slots. Moonbeam, maybe not six, but I wouldn't drop the power since defender snipes can be very effective; for instance i have seen moonbeam and psionic lance do very good jobs of pulling single AVs on the Statesman TF.

I'm not a fan of Tactics except as a stepping stone to Vengeance (on autofire). By level 35, your teammates should have fixed any tohit problems on their own.

Your primary power set is full of I WIN buttons. If you feel that's not enough, Tough + Weave + Shadow Fall + APP toggle + Maneuvers gives you a fair amount of defense and overlapping resistances of common damage types, in case of lucky shots landing before you can achieve lockdown.

If you're not married to Moonbeam, another power might do you more good. The ability to inflict a single large tick of damage is a nice perk, but only if you're going out of your way to not use DoTs. And that would be silly. With sufficient recharge, a Dark Blast + Gloom chain does the job fine without Moonbeam; add Boxing to the chain if you've dipped into Fighting pool.

Dark Pit: Love it or leave it. 2-slot Dark Pit isn't going to do anyone any good. Either increase its slots so it can function reasonably well (needs acc, stun, and recharge), or trade it for a power that does function well with few slots.

You may be able to respec a slot or two out of Stamina once you get Dark Consumption, depending on your playstyle (nuke lots or nuke never) and build (endredux lots or endredux never).

Soul Drain could use some slotting love; its accuracy is decent out of the box (x1.20), but you do want to hit as much as possible with it, and get it recharged quickly.

Hi,

Thanks for all the comments everybody.

@Psylenz - I've heard negative comments on oppressive gloom, ie it uses up too much end and hp for not enough benefit. What are your thoughts on this?

@Rigel and Black - I would never have thought to slot up Boxing. Most guides say to take it only as a stepping stone to Tough and Weave. I can see how it could be effective - I'm usually standing in melee range so my AOE heal hits the tanks and scrappers. And it could more useful than moonbeam with its long animation. But I do like moonbeam.

I love to Fly. Superjump causes me to hit my head on walls and under staircases. Can't jump to the second floor of AE buildings either. Hadn't really heard of the jetpacks. Just buy em for 10000 inf and use em for 2 hrs toggle on time?

I seem to want Fly, Hasten, Recall Friend, Boxing/Tough/Weave and Maneuvers/Assautl/Vengeance. Unless I get a special dispensation for five pool power sets, choices have to be made. Which is better, LEadership or Fighting?

While sidekicked up to 49th, I got two shot a couple of times so was looking at Tough/Weave. Does Dark Embrace help fix this problem at 50?

radsmash - if all you were using for stun is oppressive gloom, then yes, too much end for too little benefit. However, Dark/dark users get to choose Howling Twilight and Dark Pit. All the stuns stack and can stun lieutants and bosses. Stuns are great mitigation. If you have dark consumption on top of slotted inherent stamina, it shouldn't be a problem.

Wow, who says that? OG's end cost (less than 1/5th of Shadow Fall) and self hurt (3 per tick) are small beans. The real cost is giving up a power selection, and maybe an extra enhancement slot or two to help it hit and last longer if you move away.

In the long run, you'll be more effective with a power you like than a power you don't. Boxing and Moonbeam are close enough in DPS that you shouldn't sweat the numbers. The big advantage of Boxing is you have to take it anyway, if you want Tough and Weave. The big advantage of Moonbeam is that you like it. It's okay to take both if you have the power choices and enhancements slots for it.

I seem to want Fly, Hasten, Recall Friend, Boxing/Tough/Weave and Maneuvers/Assault/Vengeance. Unless I get a special dispensation for five pool power sets, choices have to be made. Which is better, Leadership or Fighting?
If I could free up enough power choices and fix my end recovery, I'd take both Leadership and Fighting, and drop Hasten. YMMV; I have unusual playstyle preferences. (Vengeance on auto means I can't put Hasten on auto.)

If you put a gun to my head and force me to take Hasten, I'd pick Fighting over Leadership since I'm often the de facto tanker on PuGs. Again a playstyle preference thing. If you don't tank much, there's no need for Fighting.

While sidekicked up to 49th, I got two shot a couple of times so was looking at Tough/Weave. Does Dark Embrace help fix this problem at 50?
SOs will fix this problem at 22. You could still, theoretically, get two-shot, but enemies will have a significantly reduced chance of landing even one shot. Just make sure you're opening with a good alpha-nullifying power, either a well enhanced Fearsome Stare or a well enhanced Darkest Night. Dark Pit or Tenebrous Tentacles as an opener is asking for trouble; Tar Patch as an opener is masochistic.

Fearsome Stare or Howling Twilight are the preferred opening volleys. If you are single pulling, twilight grasp isn't a bad way to go since it debuffs that target.

The fact that you say you "never die...much" pretty much proves it's not the safest opener. Tar Patch does very little to change the amount of incoming damage. DN, FS, HT, and even casting Fluffy in a middle of a mob will be far safer.

Tactics is golden in BAF since it protects against Confuse.

Meh my defense is all the mitigation i need, my team is usally competant enough to destroy a spawn before it really knows whats happening.
Tar patch is usually all i need to put down, thought I do agree miasma debuffs are pretty disgusting and i often run on ahead just to play around with a spawn or 2 and see how long i can survive

Taking your latest build, I moved some things around and slotted it. Not the cheapest of builds, and some recipes would take some work to get the merits necessary. But this build should give you some ideas.

Thanks for all the help. I think I will tend towards the Fighting set, and drop Hasten for Oppressive Gloom. I like how HT shuts down the mobs and stacking HT, DP and OG sound like fun.

I think a build something like this is what I'm driving towards. Slotting will be a combination of sets and IOs, mostly driven towards what I want to enhance, with consideration for salvage drops and cost of materials.

--personally i don't care for snipes, plus your team will be invincible (no need to pull)

make use of Dark Watchers (2~4 of um) and Touch of the Nictus (3~4)

don't forget to sprinkle in a few Lysosomes.

To be honest, a dark/dark could pick powers at random and still be uber...so good.

Hello again,

My def is now 39 and I've been looking ahead to slotting her IO sets. I've come up with a build that soft caps ranged def, mostly because I don't like getting mezzed.

I have some questions.

Does a dark/dark defender need soft capped Ranged def, or should she rely more on Fear, HT, DP and some Break Frees?

The Endurance recovery is very close to endurance use, which usually means endurance problems when using powers. Is there some change to fix this?

HT has two Stupefy for the end recovery. I'd really rather have Recharge reductions there.

Are the powers past 38 slotted well enough? Obviously I haven't used them yet.

Is there some easy way to get these IO set recipes? At the AH, they cost millions of inf, if any are for sale at all. Merit badges seem to take a long time to collect 240 and I'd need 240 each. Or I could take my chances on AE mission ticket random rolls.

I'm more willing to respec out of fly/hover and take CJ/Something else. Another toon got himself a jet pack at level 11 and 2 hrs toggle time lasts awhile, so I'd be more willing to use that for vertical travel.

Range defense takes some effort to get capped, so your build likely be better off with second choice and just carry some break frees alike the rest of us (and keep some more in your inbox).

Yes, and no... Since I don't have Mid's on this computer, I can't see your build. But you could get by with getting the temp power-recovery serum and wait till 50lvl and get your alpha-cardiac.

HT, just slotted with recharge IOs... that's all it really needs. If you're able to use it on every boss you come across, it won't matter if the boss is stunned for 18 seconds or 20 seconds... cus he will be defeated by your team before you need to be worried about it.

The fastest way to get cash, is to play the market. With just a little seed money, you can end up with millions with only a few hours a week. The Market Forum will give you alot of advise on how to do that. As for merits, look for task forces you enjoy and join. Find missions that you can farm for them, or start doing tip missions and farm those. My advise, skip the solo AE ticket missions, you just not the build to grind them out fast enough to make them worth your time. Hell, I don't even do them on my fire/storm unless I'm too cheap to buy some rare salvage and need some tickets.

Just go with Haste, and Super Speed... with Shadowfall on, its a cheap invisibility which you will need in some missions/trials/task forces. That's how I run my Darks, with SS/SF on all the time. It was easy, once I trained myself in a few cavern missions running about and such.

I've tried the AH and so far buying salvage low and vendoring it has been successful, but that only seems to make 1000s of inf. I've met with failure so far on buying recipes low and selling IOs high. I'll keep trying. Thanks for the advice.

Salvage isn't the only way to get cash on the market, you can make bucks just buying varies 50lvl recipes for 100 and selling them to the vender for 10,000. Do that over 30 mins and make your first million. As I said, there is alot of good information in the Market Forum. Keep a eye on salvage that has wild swings on weekends then drops in price on weekdays. Also keep a eye out for Marketer manipulation, and take advantage of it.

After a few weeks, you will get a feel for the market and be able to start making the big bucks. It be a little more work then just doing a farm map over and over, but is a skill once gain can be used to help any of your toons.

I spoke too soon. One of the guides showed how to buy uncommon salvage at 501 and then resell at 5005. My banker toon has made 2M inf in two days. Not quite at the buying recipes for 10M inf mark yet, but at least I feel more comfortable building 100k's of inf for them.

Still tryng to get get a feel for selling crafted IOs. One sold fairly quickly but two others have not.

And you're right. I cannot seem to farm AE missions.

Thanks for all the advice!
