Alternate Animations
They created "alternate" animations for some powers already. Most of the blast sets already allow you the choice of two different animations for it. And some offer quite a different effect. For instance, X-Ray Beam can now be shot from the hands. So it is possible. However, they do take time, and I doubt they'll change the actual effect animation, but different points of origin seem possible.
The only reason I quote "alternate" is because they basically created four new animations and applied them to several dozen powers. Not exactly what I was hoping for.

How difficult would it be to have the current powers animations changed. For example, you could keep the old Energy blast, or could they develop new animations so that it reflects other types of energy, ie light, cosmic, or from other starting points like optic blasts, chest beams, wrist cannons and so on?
On a related note, how difficult would it be to have the animations be from weapons, like for example some of Life Mage animations, or the Nemesis staff. Is this doable and would the player base support something like this? |
I for one would love the weapon based powers you are describing, but I think that something like that would be implemented well after the Soon timeframe (as in, probably never.)

I was dissapointed with the alternate animations we received recently. I know that to do what I am asking would require resources, and probably more than just a few. It would be cool to have that though. I wonder if for new powers go forward that they create variations, that way, they only have to "update" existing powers, and not new ones.
Well, I know that we'd support it, but it's Extremely Difficult for the devs to implement.

EDIT: With regards to non-weapon sets using weapons - they'd have to make one set of animations for each weapon used, according to what the devs have said previously, and if you picked different weapons for different powers, you'd have constant redraw. But it's still possible.

It wouldn't be any harder to implement than creating a new powerset from scratch would be, from an animation/effects standpoint, but it would take just as much time as creating a powerset from scratch from an animation/effects standpoint.
Personally, if they are going to spend just as much time either way, I'd rather the end result be a completely new powerset than some new animations for an existing one.

And for the highlighted part of the OP - I recolor blasts - bright gold/white for "light" blasts, various colors for "cosmic" (what color is cosmic BTW? how would it differ from either Light or Energy?), so part of your wish is already possible.

While we're wishing into the ether, I'd really love to see an animation for Kinetic Melee's Concentrated Strike that didn't look like the user was having a seizure, too.
Agreed Ad Astra, but one thing I will say. I play this game to pretend to be a superhero, and I design that superhero, and give it a background. I don't want to pretend the powers. Having said that,there are limitations, and we can't all get what we want. Colouring alone doesn't make something different when the animation is the same. Again, I only asked because it would give options that didn't necessarily mean creating new powers. But it's not that simple, I know.
Well, I guess it's a matter of my visualization being different from yours. The animations for Energy Blast work much in the same way I can picture Light Blasts looking.
Though there may be other potential powersets that I may not be able to visualize merely from recoloring.
