A couple Necro/Dark questions.
Hey guys, I recently made a Necro/Dark MM. I'm really enjoying it, but I have a few questions for you.
1) How do I slot the Soul Extraction? I don't know what this pet excels at at all, really. As I see it doing a nice spread of damage and control. 2) How do I slot the Lich? I know he's a control/debuff monster. Should I just do 2 Acc/ 2 ToHit Debuff/ 2 Hold? Also, are strictly all Hami-Os the way to go with this guy when I get to 50? 3) How do I slot the Dark Servant as well? No idea on this one. 4) What set bonuses are best to shoot for? I have no idea what might benefit me most. 5) What's a good APP/PPP to go with? I was thinking Soul Mastery so I could get Oppressive Gloom for even more lockdown, but is that overkill? That's all I've been thinking about for now. Thanks. |
1) 4 slot it for the Unique Pet IOs. Never look back.
2) Frankenslot for Accuracy and Accuracy Debuff. Hold and Fear bonuses are also nice on him.
3) Accuracy, Accuracy Debuff, Heal (optional), Recharge. Actually, you can just go Accuracy and Recharge. At this point your enemy is barely hanging on to their 5% ToHit.
4) I don't usually bother with set bonuses, but when I do I shoot for +HP and resistance to holds. With your -ToHit debuffs you could probably shoot for Defense bonuses if they fit in with your build. Helps when that AV has a stun or two that nicks off all your debuffs.
5) Yes, overkill. Not having played in a year (don't really know the APP for Villains) I would suggest Black Scorpion for the Defense shield. However, endurance will be an issue against AVs solo, so look for anything that gives a little extra endurance mitigation.
For ghosty I'd go with the two intesive recharge uniques and then frankenslot for recharge, dam and enough accuracy. The other two uniques can be squeezed into zombies and maybe dark servant.
Personally I try to have at least a zombie spawned ghosty out as often as I can, it's another controllable pet and is better than the zombie, which you can resummon anyway afterwards.
Dark servant frankenslot slot for to hit and recharge. Don't use accurate to hit to slot for accuracy as it won't affect some powers which don't take the set (the hold mainly). The ds is the same as the defender version, except he's not perm normally, so I find having him out all the time is very handy.
I know some pets with heals are slighty dumb, they don't use it until someone has lost more health than it heals for, so slotting for heal can be a bad thing, it makes them wait longer before using it. But I have never checked if that is the case for ds. Fairly sure it is for the zombie, ghosty, grave knight and lich drains though, so I never slot them for heal.

2) Acc and To-hit debuff are a good place to start with the Lich. Hammi-Os are very appealing for this pet.
3) I usually six slot mastermind dark servants with dampened spirits as an economical start. Franken-slotting some accuracy in this pet isn't bad. The big statistic I look at in dark servant is the base 30% to-hit debuff in Chill of the Night, the point blank AoE around the Dark Servant that is a bane to melee attack from nasty foes that run in close despite the tar patch, such as warwolves and carnie strongmen. Also, with content that resists a lot of to-hit debuff, there really never is too much to-hit debuff.
4) Dark secondary benefits from recharge, heal and stun bonuses, from IO and alpha slotting.
5) For the APP, a lot of benefit can be had from manuvers, shadow fall, and the scorpion shield and pushing defense bonuses. The web grenade and soul tentacles in either scorpion or soul mastery are both indispensible. Having said that, increasing your resistances isn't a bad proposition either. I rather like oppressive gloom for discouraging melee intruders. This ability stacks with howling twilight's stun and can mezz harder targets.
Necro/Dark is a classic build that suits many a mastermind. The variety in damage types is a great benefit. I am not sure how you proceed. When I solo, I tend to put the grave knights on aggressive after eating the alpha in bodyguard, and then following with the other pets on defensive follow. Your lich will save your bacon more often than not and the dark servant is much more melee minded and is great support for the grave knights. The new dark servant melee approach benefits the grave knights possibly more than other mastermind pets.

HelinCarnate:OMG it is so terrible. I have the option to take 3 more powers but no additional slots. Boo F'ing hoo.
For my Necro/Dark I went as follows:
Soul Extraction - the two intensive recharge pet aura uniques, the other 4 devoted to acc/dam/rech (I ultimately used the purple pet set to maximise both damage and recharge). I use Zombie Horde for the other two pet aura uniques.
Lich - Cloud Senses chance of negative damage proc (almost everything the Lich does can proc that), 4 slots to acc/dam (it may not be a high damage pet, but it does still put damage out), 1 last slot for either another proc or a straight -tohit generic. I work on the basis that between myself, Dark Servant, and Lich I already put out a hell of a lot of -tothit and control so I'd rather squeeze a bit more damage from Lich. I may be in the minority in this.
Dark Servant - also gets the Cloud Senses damage proc (again, almost everything he does can proc this). After that I'd focus on getting a base level of accuracy, enough recharge to more or less perma, then the rest on -tohit (though I also squeezed in some healing - I ended up with 48% acc, 65% rech, 31% -tohit, 53% heal). While Servant's strongest suit is -tohit, he does a lot of useful stuff so it's partly personal preference exactly how much you devote to enhancing any given aspect.
Set bonuses - +recharge is a good one for Dark Miasma - double stacking Tar Patch, having Fearsome Stare and Howling Twilight out more often, getting Dark Servant perma, more frequent Twilight Grasp (as much for the debuff as the heal), etc etc. Other than that I'd look to +maxhp (esp. if you take a tankermind approach) and +recovery (Dark Miasma can be a bit of a drain, though with inherent Fitness that's not as big a deal now). Or alternatively +def to stack with your -tohit for targets that resist it (e.g. AVs).
APP/PPP - I'm not sure there's any that truly stand out as more useful than the others, they'd all be decent choices. As said, Black Scorpion may have an edge stacking the +def shield with all your -tohit, and Soul Mastery gives you another layer or control (and a bit more -tohit if you pick up Nightfall) while staying consistent(ish) in theme. But really, go with whatever takes your fancy here. I took Soul and don't regret it.
