Plant/Fire Dom Help

Hi all,

Big dominator user here. My current alt getting the most play mileage is my Plant/Fire dominator. I regularly play this alt with another friend, who has rolled a Spines/Fire. We'll probably play them all the way to 50, and then try to get the incarnates unlocked.

The alt's Lv 38 now, but I'm working on my Level 50 build. I've already got permadom at 38, and want to keep it (obviously). That said, I'm trying to squeeze in some good defense. I don't want to take Ice as my epic, even though Frozen Armor would help with that goal. I made this alt so that I could keep the look consistent, so I want to use Fire for my epic (especially given the fun that is Embrace of Fire + Fireball/Rain of Fire). As is, I've got good resistance, but I just can't get my defense any higher without losing perma-hasten (which I like out of convenience--stupid pom poms be damned).

Is there anything I'm doing wrong here, or is this the best it gets keeping permadom and permahasten. If this is the best it gets, is the defense I've got even worth it? Any other comments are also welcome

Thanks much!

I know you want the fire epic, but if you want defense, you want the Scorpion Shield from Mace mastery. That and some sets and you can easily cap to S/L.

Make a man a fire and keep him warm for the day, SET a man on fire and keep him warm for the rest of his life.
Incarnates: K'lir(Fire/Dark Corr):Hot-House Flower(Plant/Fire Dom):Kinrad X(Kin/Rad Def):Itsy-Bitsy Spider(Crab):Two Ton Tony(Mace/WP Broot):Teeny Weeny Widow(Fortunata/Widow) : Zeroth Law (Ice/Fire Tank)

Or go Ice mastery and try to decide which of the five powers you won't take.

I love my Plant/Fire/Fire "Mr. Plantastic" -- today I ran him on a shard-hunting ITF with my RO buds, and it was the most fun I've had in a long time. Always something to do. Truly is the "Brute" of Doms.

Firey Embrace + Fire EPIC (Fireball, Rain of Fire) + Roots = toasty goodness. I'd go Ice on a different Dom for S/L but on Plant/Fire, you're crazy not to go fire epic. Seeds and Creepers > S/L softcap.

I just wish Doms had more damage. I miss when Domination used to buff your damage -- that was outstanding!

I can't believe you guys are using Gravitational Anchor in Roots.

Roots does nearly half the damage of Fireball and has 1/4 the cooldown. You're not maxed out on 6.5% damage enhancement slots, so you're really only getting 3.5% global recharge by going Gravitational Anchor and you're losing what is objectively your most versatile AoE attack, not to mention in some cases, your strongest.

If you're using the Reactive DoT it makes Roots even crazier. It basically increases the damage by 40% if you don't have significant external damage buffs going.

Also your playstyles are so foreign to me. You guys focus super heavily on defense, to the point that you pick up Contagious Confusion for 5% ranged defense instead of using a range enhancement to extend your cone far enough to not even get hit by the alpha in the first place.

Honestly I feel plant/fire is a frenetic, very high damage build and that using Rise of the Phoenix a couple times an hour well worth it for the major damage increase you guys could get by dropping your focus on defense.

I mean seriously, SoC has a 16 second or less recharge and lasts over a minute in a decent build. Vines has a recharge of a minute and change, and you have an excellent AoE sleep on a about a 12 second cooldown. To bridge the gaps you have inspirations, your Destiny power, and Rise of the Phoenix, plus who knows what else I'm forgetting about.

its the controller mentality, some people dont understand slotting controls as attacks or using their controls as their defense.

I assume so. I guess it comes from being accustomed to eating an alpha from all the bosses every time you use an AoE mez on a new group.

Personally I don't use a single purple set in my build.
I fill both my single target and group immobilize with 5 "Enfeebled Operation".

I've got perma-hasten, perma-domination, and am capped to smashing/lethal.
I can take out large spawns easily with fire breath and combustion, plus I have roots, carrion creepers, and Audrey for even more damage/control.
SoC recharges in 17 seconds on my build, and it takes me slightly less than that to kill an entire spawn of lvl 54 without ever taking a hit.

I had the fire epic for a while, but I didn't really need the extra AoE damage, and the S/L softcap makes it possible for me run around like an idiot inside the Lamdba maps w/o caring much about anything.
I also didn't take the group hold... I don't need it.

That's what is great about this game, you can build however you want and still be effective and have fun.
Below is my build, it is not the best by a long shot, but it is relatively cheap (A-Merits for the win!) and lots of fun for me to play.

Here is some counterpoint to kinrad's build. softcapped(45% in regular content not vs +4s in the new trials) with the use of cheap purples(confuse/sleep) and the ice epic instead of mace and exploiting enzymes. i personally dont think doms need to build for defense once they go perma but at least the ice epic has a sweet damage boosting debuff in it vs mace which only has some energy def. included to help its case.
p.s. full disclosure, i never played plant/fire but i have alot of plant/psi and mind/fire experience and some on earth/fire.

I only built for ~ 32% ranged def in my build so I could hit 45% with one small purple. You make a valid point about Roots and dmg-slotting, so I will take a look at that and see how it affects my +rchrg time for Domination.

However with a /Fire dom, especially Plant/Fire, I do really like the Fire epic instead of Ice. But I'm probably wrong. Someone needs to do the math on whether having Sleet up every X seconds (38?) will, overall, provide a greater damage enhancer (through Sleet's -RES) than having Embrace of Fire do its +dmg with Fireball and Rain of Fire every X seconds.

sleet is a force multiplier in that it really shines on a team, if you solo alot it makes less sense to spend all that activation time and endurance for less of a net damage increase for yourself. -res and +damage are pretty straight forward to compare unlike to-hit or defense buff/debuffs.

if ice mastery had some kind of aoe along with ice storm there would be no question i'd use it always but im an aoe addict and cant imagine playing without some kind of ppp/app aoe blast. maybe they could remove hibernate, noone used it except pvpers anyway...

ps. im sorry if you guys cant read my data chunks, i am using mids 1.92 from i19(feb 2011) if that helps.

My only complaint about the Ice epic is the shield. It offers plenty of S/L defense, but I just don't like the way it looks.

This. One of the often overlooked perks of Plants is that our AoE root does double damage, making it a very respectable attack. Enhancing its duration is unimportant because you're going to be recasting it so frequently anyway. I also like the freedom to let Roots expire and allow knockback/down effects to resume if I so choose.

I was plant/fire/ice for a month or so and I really didn't feel like Sleet was a particularly significant multiplier, which I'm sure sounds crazy. It just never felt like we stayed in place long enough for it to matter, and generally people had already fired off a round of AoE that obliterated the minions/LTs before I even finished the animation. It's certainly a very useful ability and if it weren't bugged with the NoPhase issue I'd consider going back to it, but I really feel that fire is a better fit.

I do miss it on AVs, but I really think that it's only more effective than fire when you've got at least 6 players in one place attacking a cluster of bosses. In most missions players split up and/or do other things like buff/heal/debuff, so you're rarely seeing the entire team's damage increase as much as you'd expect.

Also it's just interesting to think about how because doms have high base damage but low multipliers, we are the kind of class other classes exist to buff/debuff. We're the intended recipients of those effects and oftentimes it makes sense to spend time positioning to take advantage of them instead of spec'ing to provide our own.

I honestly love Hibernate, I'd much rather see Hoarfrost go if they actually fixed Sleet.

I was able to import it with just a few enhancements missing. I'll post a code and see if it helps.

Solo_one: your updated data block loads fine, but Mids is only showing 40.5% S/L defense, not softcapped? There is no power pick in the 44 slot either...
