How much bandwidth does CoX client needed to function correctly?
It doesn't sound like a bandwidth issue. Hotel internet gets abused a lot and your individual connection may have an unstable ping and high packet loss. The packet loss is usually what causes the issues you describe. Unfortunately, there is little you can do if you continue to use the hotel's internet connection. There are simply too many people in the hotel abusing it by downloading constantly or running torrent programs or allowing malware to use the connection.
I'm on the road again this week and I'm getting dog performance from the game. I was told in the past that this client needed 10Kbps to function correctly.
I bought a Verizon 4G card with a bandwidth measurement usage monitor a few months ago, I tested it with the CoX Client and in an evening (7-10pm), I used up 100MB. I'm in hotel with 384KB wired and it's dragging through the loads. I can't reach objectives to send the team to the next mish without it stalling/crashing. Also, over the past few months, the game client on ocassions appears haunted. I can't see teammates on maps for short periods, I can't dismiss my pets/call unless I zone., etc. I believe these experiences have been directly relate to bandwidth I was given at the time I was playing. I need an expert opinion about the game client requirements. |
I don't have a hard number answer to give you but I do know that you can reduce the amount of info being sent by changing your options to not send buff numbers.
I don't like turing them off due to losing the visual cues that tell me when buffs are dropping or when inspirations are wearing off but it may be a short term fix for when your on the road

this is just horrible. Lag is bad, my zoning is bad and I'm being bumped from the game about every 30 minutes. I might call it a night. It's all 3 reds...it may get worse from here.

Most of the time there's no segregation between wired and wireless network.
That and the Internet connection being provided, many times, isn't maintained in-house. It's contracted out to a 3rd party and given minimal service time. As such, routing for such connections tends to be horrible at best, and packet loss is a major issue.
The bad part is, there's no real metric for this sort of thing either. It's not like $200/night four-star places are any better than $50/night one stars. Hell, in a couple of the places I've stayed, it's been the exact opposite!
And it may be true that the client only needs 10K to run "properly". But "properly" may mean "really fricking slow, but it runs".
I play CoH with a 3g Sprint EVO connection (not on the road, full time as that is my only internet connection) and it is completely 100% fine while solo. Appears to be the same a my old Time Warner Roadrunner cable connection from several years ago, before I had to unsub. On a full team of eight, with all kinds of stuff going on it slows down a bit... but I seem to remember a bit of lag in the old days too.

I have an internet connection that does 150k bytes per second tops, and I'm fine. I don't think it's physically possible to use that much bandwidth while playing the game. And your hotel advertises twice that (unless you're confusing bits and bytes again. Actually 384Kbps sounds familiar, like a standard DSL number. It's worth about 38K Bytes per second.)
Just follow-up, I quit the game thursday night because it was so bad. I came back the next day and I had no problems. I think the game must of been really busy thursday night. I was on all day Friday in the same hotel with no problems. Thanks for the comments.
