Help an old CoH-er get up to speed?

Hey all.

I played CoH/CoV for a long time in the good o' days. I'd say roughly the 3+ years of mid 2004 through end of 2007.

I'd like to get back into the game, so I was hoping someone could point me to some threads that discuss what has changed in the last 3 years. I bought Rogue, but I'm not sure how to utilize it.

I'm mostly solo (or duo now and then) with really not much game time available these days (maybe 30 mins per night). My enjoyment of the toon typically revolves around being immune to status effects and not dying every fight. Everything else is negotiable (grin).

In case it helps, here are my old toons that I enjoyed and still have. Any suggestions on current builds for these are appreciated.

50 tank (stone armor/fire melee)
50 brute (dark melee/stone armor/soul)
47 tank (ice armor/fire melee/pyre)
38 tank (stone armor/fire melee)
41 troller (fire/rad)
33 troller (ice/sonic)
24 troller (ice/emp; strictly teaming)
39 MM (forgot the names, necro/undead thing)
40 warshade
44 peacebringer

I'm not opposed to starting a new toon, but I'd probably only do it for a tank, brute or scrapper. I generally disliked the scrappers, as they felt way too squishy (and too much focus on single-target) for my tastes... but if there are new ones, please let me know. I always hoped to play one that felt somewhere between a brute/tank in survival.

Thanks ahead of time!

First off, bookmark ParagonWiki, it has a massive amount of information about the game.

A large chunk of Going Rogue is Praetoria, which you would need to roll a new character and select the Praetorian alignment (instead of Hero or Villain). In Praetoria, there's a number of different paths through the story you can take, so you could run multiple characters through those zones without seeing it all.

You might wanna just go to ParagonWiki's Issue articles and read about the ones you missed, that'll be a good summary of what's changed... Also, we got Power Customization... go to the tailer and check it out

I don't recall what year IO's came out, so no idea if they were around when you left the game.. But they can make Scrappers pretty darn survivable if you stack up some defense bonuses.

I believe he left the game shortly before invention sets came out. Probably his best bet is to start a new toon because that way he can discover new aspects of the game in a measured fashion.

ParagonWiki is definitely a recommended resource. Also, in the CoH forums, go to Player Help >> Player Guides >> Guide to Guides. That'll have everything you want to know about the various archetypes and how their power sets work.

If he was here through all of 2007 he was here for the introduction of IOs. Issue 9 was released May 1st, 2007.

I concur with this.

Also of note: Just recently, Fitness was made inherent, so you get all 4 powers in the Fitness pool for free at level 2.

Welcome back. Now that you have Going Rogue, you can bring a Brute to either red or blueside as well as a Scrapper. Scrappers get Criticals and Brutes get Fury. In general, I would think Brutes are a bit more survivable.

Scrappers get Spines, though, which is nice for PBAoE.

I agree that starting a new character might be nice, but with only 30 mins or so day to play, you will be missing out on a lot. Instead, you might wanna work on that Fire/Rad Troller.

At L41, you can choose Psionic Mastery pool, which gives you Indomitable Will (360 base recharge, 90 sec duration). That power gives you Resistance to Disorient, Hold, Sleep, and Fear (not Confuse or Immobilize, but still pretty good).

You might wanna check the forums for player guides on it. If you get to the incarnate content, you can also get the Clarion incarnate power, which gives mez protection (but that's a bit into your future).

As others said, paragonwiki.com is a great resource, you can start by searching things like "Issue 20". Look for the earliest issue where you left and then go forward. Some of it will be useful, some not. There's a whole lot of new stuff, though, and you may want to get up to speed on a lot of it. Ouroboros is a great place to revisit content at a solo pace.

The best part of Paragon wiki for you right now is probably the list of Issues.

http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Issues

That gives you a blow by blow description of each issue and what it updated.

Basically assuming you were here for all of 2007, new stuff includes: Cimerora is a new zone where you go back in time to fight Romans and Nazis (return of the 5th Column), power customization, Architect Entertainment (player made content), power proliferation (a lot of sets are now accessible by more ATs), a lot of new temp powers, missions, tips, Going Rogue (side switching), Praetoria and all the incarnate stuff.

I'm not opposed to starting a new toon, but I'd probably only do it for a tank, brute or scrapper.

VEATs got added in 2008--Villains now have their very own epic archetype, and they're pretty cool. Plus, the requirements have been reduced for all EATs from a level 50 to a level 20, so all you have to do is log-in the 39 Mastermind and you have access to essentially four new ATs-- Night Widow, Fortunata, Crab Spider and Bane Spider.

I'd also consider starting something new, like maybe a Dom or a Corruptor with one of the new power sets and play that trough Praetoria. There's some darn nice stuff in those new zones.
