Follow = Follow, later.

This is getting frustrating.

In combat, I'm watching my zombie attack an enemy. The enemy turns and flees halfway across the map.

My zombie tries to give chase. Since I know this means the idiot will follow the enemy into the next three spawns around the corner and down the hall, I tap my "Follow" keybind.

I watch the zombie say that he's following... While he continues to chase the enemy. So I start tap-tap-tap-tapping that bind. The zombie starts repeating over and over and over about how he's following me... While he keeps right on chasing the enemy.

And of course, this leads to wipes, and I look like the bad MM that can't control his pets.

Shouldn't "Follow" mean "Follow", and not "Follow, but only after you've hit that enemy ONLY ONCE, no matter how far you have to chase to do it!"?

Seriously annoying.

Are you doing Follow or Follow Defensive?

If they're in Aggressive mode just Follow mightn't be enough, you might need to issue a Follow Defensive or even a "Heel" (Follow Passive) to make him behave.

He is a mouldering corpse after all. Cut him some slack.

The keybind is as follows: petcom_name zom "follow defensive"

Hmmm. I remember that does take a second or two to kick in but it's been a while since I played my Necro MM.

If they take damage on the way back they'll re-aggro but I can't see how that would happen if they're chasing a runner.

Only thing I can advise is a "Heel" bind as well, issue with that is that it'll take the pet(s) involved out of BG mode which can be very dangerous for you.

This. The Follow command translates by the AI as "Follow me, once your current action is completed" - so it doesn't stop chase mode, flee mode or anything similar until the AI is "issuing" another command.

"Passive Stop" will interrupt everything else and have them, as ZM says, clear their aggro lists. When my Bots get hit by a burn patch (or similar) I will always issue Passive Stop, before Follow to get them to respond correctly.

Putting them into Passive is practically out of the question- there goes BG mode, and then bam, I'm basically three shot dead.

Follow should mean "Follow", not "Follow when you're done."

Well, he IS a zombie; cut him some slack. Seriously, it seems that zombies do that more than other pets... at least from what I've seen; perhaps a bug? I dismiss him whenever it gets too far ahead. If he doesn't die from massive aggro...

I feel like follow shouldn't even need to overide chase or flee actions it should supercede them in the first place

Shouldn't be a concern. All you need to do is press Passive and then instantly click follow. They'll clear their list and then go right back into BG mode. If you die in that short amount of time I doubt BG mode would save you anyways, considering your zombie wouldn't be in range anyways...

Truth is, I don't get the emphasis on BG mode being the end all be all. My Necro/Dark is 49 and I don't think I've used BG mode... ever. Preferring to not have the delay in attacking with them being in defensive mode. Perhaps if I was tankerminding, but that's another stroy.

Simple fact: If you're screwed with BG mode off, you're screwed with BG mode on. It mitigates the damage you take. It does not buff your defense.

I tend to be VERY careful about which targets I have selected when I hit "attack my target," and my pets are very good at returning to me when they're done killing stuff, even in Aggressive Mode. If they do go off on their own, I usually find a nearby target before they get too far.
