Mind Control Questions
Hi everyone, I'm seriously looking at a Mind/Nrg Dominator but I have a few concerns that I wanted to ask about before I commit. I hope no one minds indulging me.
I often solo a lot, but I want to be able to contribute a lot to teams. 1) There doesn't seem to be a lot of AoE repeatable hard-control. Mass confusion and Total Domination are on long cool downs. Terrify is on a short cool-down but enemies who are terrorised can fight back... on a team with AoE damage seems like it may as well not be there. 2) A lot of the new top level content seems to feature robots as enemies, will a mind controller be gimped against them? 3) On high level teams that steam-roll stuff is there any need for control powers? Will i be relegated to a gimp-blaster only using my secondary? TIA for your input. |
2) The only powers that don't really work on bots are your sleeps - Mesmerize and Mass Hypnosis. At that level of play you should at least be slotted for perma dom, which will help minimize the cooldowns of Mass Confusion and Total Domination. Otherwise, Terrify is your best friend in this case.
3) Mass Hypnosis will mitigate the Alpha while your team strolls in. Just be sure to stay ahead of your team to make that work. In this case you could slot Terrify with damage instead of fear (Domination will make up the lack of mez) then your single target mezzes also have damage (except Confuse) so you'll still be able to use your mind control on steamrolling teams. Focusing on difficult targets would be key. Sappers and Nullifiers come to mind.
Side note: if you're fighting enemies that have helpful buffs, confuse them to get their buffs. Works great with rikti guardians. Hello free AM and def Bubbles!
SG: Guadians of Paragon - VG: Paragon's Darkness
The Usual Suspects: Fimboolvetr (Icer Tank), Tsukiyomi (Mind/Psi/Ice Dom), Smiting Dragon (Dm/Sr Scrap), Widow Mortis (NW)
Up and Comers: Ameterasu (Km/Reg Scrap), Arrhymian (Elec/Nin Stalk), TDMKII (Bot/Traps MM)
I've generally noticed that high-level teams only really steamroll stuff if there's a cool Controller/Dominator dude making sure they sit in one place, so that's always helpful. I kind of gave up on my Mind Dom because of the lack of really hard, consistent CC that all of the other sets seem to get, but Mind Doms do still have their place (mostly with Mass Hypnosis/Confuse).

2. Levitate. Use it, love it against robots. It's pure smashing damage, which robots are weak against. The rest of your powers are indeed psychic, but while the bots resist the damage (which is usually low to none on controls anywise) the effects of the controls are totally separate from the damage resistance. Foes that are resistant to psy damage will stay held just as long as foes vulnerable to psychic damage. The only thing that will change that is if one has HOLD resistance/protection.
3. Nope. You may be providing less lockdown if your powers are not fast enough, but when you use them, they will still work well. Confuses speed up kill speed, as the enemies will not target you or allies with damage, debuffs, or controls. Heck, they can and will debuff/mez/damage each other to make things way easier. Also, things they damage give a disproportionate reward. If a confused for does 90% of the damage, you do 10%, you'll still get way more than 10% xp though your enemy did the work.
Holds do the same, though they last shorter times, and hold foes in place.
Sleeps are best on side foes, mesmerize works immediately on even bosses, which even if they awaken immediately, will still detoggle any toggle debuffs or the like. Use well on CoT/Tsoo/etc. Sleeps only break when damage is dealt, which on a steam roller team means they don't attack until they are getting killed. As they are getting killed, they then die, and are less of a concern.
Fear, covered that earlier.
If you get to permadom status, mass confuse is up a lot :/ I mass confuse one mob, total dom the next, and often ready to mass confuse again for next.
Mass hypnosis is quite good when solo. You can sleep a whole group, and take them out one by one. Or mass sleep a group, and confuse thier buffer - I love doing this with rikti guardians. Sleep a whole bunch, confuse, get a bunch of AM or shields as they wake up.
Terror is great. Has a to hit debuff, so it is doing something even with AoE teams.
Solo confuse and terror work well, you snap them out to strike at a friend.
I've never felt like gimped blaster on teams with my mind dom. I help the stream roll happen. It is permadom though but for mind its not that pricey to do so.
I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.
Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.
So sad to be ending ):
iirc, feared foes can attack back, but only once every 5 seconds. So that is solid soft control.
Also, by rotating Total Domination and Mass Confusion you can reliably lock down hard more consistently than other sets (looking at you, Ice and Gravity).
And Mind excells at single target lockdown, with two hard control powers (Hold and Confuse) you can keep two bosses out of the fight relatively easy. This comes in handy.
Agreed on the fear+confuse combo, but unfortunately mind control's terrify has absolutely no debuff. It's a common mistake, though, to confuse mind's "terrify" with dark miasma's "fearsome stare" which does debuff. Both are cone fears, but the mind control version deals psy damage instead. (The debuffing dark cone fear does no damage at all.)

Paragonwiki states it has to hit debuff, and Mids shows it accepting tohit debuff enhancements though city of data doesnt, so no doubt you're right.

I'll have to look at it tonight ingame.

Just double checked it in-game, no -tohit. Someone should edit that out of the wiki.
It is a shame. And thinking of procs, yeah, I'm sure I would of put some of them in if it could really take them.

1) Terrorize, Mass Sleep, and all your single target holds if managed correctly and use appropriately can be more than enough to help out the team between those "long" cool downs. Im sitting pretty at 217% recharge right now, and in no way is that depressing.
2) Domination is your best friend on the new TFs. Any perma Dominators can solo the sewers on the Apex and with confuse even faster. Doms have been doing it better for years when built right.
3) Never. Dominators/Controllers are very much needed. They can put some mobs at bay until your team is ready to handle them. When I see an ambush Mob attack on lets say Tin Mage when fighting Director 11, you can sleep the mob, and start single target holding the ones you might have missed, then wait for Mass Confusion or Total Domination, while having TK on Director 11 so you are totally not missing out on the action.
They are great, you just have to get the right build for yourself.
