New player need advice on next Hero
Any scrapper will have what you are looking for. Although, regen is a clicky secondary, so might want to avoid that.
Claws/Spines and Elec if you like aoe's. Swords/DM for extra surviveabilty. DB or Kin to look pretty. Pick a def or resist based flavor for secondary, and go hunt kill skulls.
A decent scrapper that mixes surviveability, aoes, and single target attacks with that power to look forward to in the future yet decent out of the box, you can't go wrong with a dm/sd scrapper.
Do you team a lot, or mostly solo?
If you're going solo, I'd say that a Scrapper might be for you. Something fun might be an Electirc Melee/Willpower Scrapper. Good survivability, while the activity is focused solely on your primary (all of the secondary powers are toggles or auto powers).
If teaming, I'd say that maybe a Controller might be a good fit. Matching it with a less "active" secondary like Force Field or Sonic, where the buffs go on, and then you can focus a lot on your primary powers, might be a good match.

I'm a little bit hesistant to recommend any defensive secondary for Scrappers (e.g. SR or SD) at this time. Unless you plan on sticking to current content and avoiding the new stuff, it'll be difficult to reach softcap and your survivability will hurt because of it. Defensive Tanks will be in trouble with the new content and Scrappers aren't anywhere near as tough. Additional defense will always be a good/great thing, but it needs to be a layer for new content, not the whole package.
That said, if you go Scrapper I would recommend Willpower for the secondary. You get extra HP, great endurance, regeneration, resistance, and defense. It's an easy set to work with and it doesn't have any clicks outside of Strength of Will, which you won't run most of the time anyway. For primary, I like Claws, Fire and Katana. Any of them will be great for DPS. Katana will add a little extra survivability. Claws is better for AOEs. Fire is just plain great DPS and has no redraw.
If you're teaming a lot or willing to throw a ton of influence at a build, I might also recommend looking at a Blaster. I'd probably avoid the Assault Rifle (weak & slow), Electric (weak) and Radiation (trades damage for often-useless defense debuff) primaries. Some would say to avoid Dual Pistols (it lacks Aim). For secondaries, use Fire or Electric if you want to be in the thick of things (you'll die a lot, but put up some big damage in the process), use Energy or Devices if you want to stay at range, use Ice or Devices if you want more mitigation, or use Mental if you want a great debuff. Some people will caution you against Devices, because it lacks Build Up and the bombs aren't really usable on most teams (you won't have time, spawn-to-spawn, to set them up).
You might find a dm/sd scrapper enjoyable. Fairly survivable in either teams or solo, and by level 12 I already felt ridiculous.

Kat/wp scrapper. Kat is ok enough early on due to DA, It's big hitters come late. /wp is solid and you have all of one click outside of the toggles. It's really Scrappers for Dummies.
Claws/sr. Claws gets Spin at 6, FU at 8, and Focus at 18. Claws also has faster recharge for it's attacks so it's rather easy to get an attack chain going compared to other sets. /sr develops late, but once it does it's rather rock solid. /sr will laugh at the idea of the new mobs that have higher tohit. Why? /sr is the easiest to soft cap, so it can easily reach any new def cap and it still has the highest defense debuff resistance along with /shield. This means even if something were to hit you with a power to debuff your defense, you would shrug it off the most. While the video is old, here's proof of what it can do. Link
Ice/ice blaster. It's a blaster and a controller rolled into one. It works on teams and solo. It's one of the best solo blasters you can find depending on how you define solo. Normal basic soloing that most new players would do it rocks on. Note, you can slot sets for slows into your attacks so when you would normally slot acc and end, you could look at getting one acc/end from two different slow sets and getting better acc and end numbers for it. It's a cheap way to do slotting until you go all out.
Ice tank. Solid def based set. It's been a smooth ride on mine. If nothing else it's the best tank for aggro control. If you solo a lot, you might want to pick a set that is either high single target damage for soloing, or AoE based and just try to solo big mobs even if they are lower level. /fire will be good for AoE and keeping aggro all the more so. /stone and /ice offer solid damage with control. /dark will help against troublesome mobs.
Inv/dark tank. Inv is what you think of when you think of a tank. /dark aids in covering what issues Inv might have. It's really hard to say something bad about the build. For a new player, you will get a ton of performance just out of SO type slotting and it gets stronger as you invest in it.
Dark/stone tank. Because it's fun to run into a mob and be able to stun the whole mob bosses included all by yourself. Huge potential for end issues, but for me it hasn't been that bad yet and once you can get a +end proc into Dark Regen things become vastly easier.
I was going to suggest a Dark defender, but you said no pets. Dark/ice would be pretty sweet though.
I'll give another vote for a /willpower scrapper. It is a low maintainence secondary with a little bit of everythig (defense, resist, and regen). For a primary, fire melee is fantastic and you can't go wrong there. I've never played dark melee, but have heard it is pretty awesome. Electric melee is great for aoe, but hurts for single target damage, and feels like it matures late.
/shield is also a lot of fun, and also low mantainence. It's pretty easy to softcap positional defense and gives you a tasty aoe attack at level 35. I recommend broadsword or fire as a primary to pair with shield. Broadsword because a sword/shield scrapper just looks totally awesome and lends itself easily to a lot of cool concepts, and fire for all of the aforementioned reasons. Electric melee/shield defense is an aoe monster, but is once a gain a late bloomer and a little short on single target damage. My main is an elec/shield brute and he solos +4x8 with ease.
If teaming, I'd say that maybe a Controller might be a good fit. Matching it with a less "active" secondary like Force Field or Sonic, where the buffs go on, and then you can focus a lot on your primary powers, might be a good match.

I concur with the advice to try a scrapper. Basically any combination will work.
I'm fond of Broadsword/Dark Armor, but it requires some investment before it gets really good. It's good before that, but it gets downright awesome once you slot some IOs in it.
Katana/Willpower has been the most frequently suggested first scrapper for a while now. Largely because there isn't anything goofy you need to remember about the powers, you basically just toggle up and start slashing away. And it doesn't give up any end game performance for it's ease of play either.
I also like Claws/Regen, but that combo thrives on the edge between glory and death. It's very dependent on knowing what your enemy can do and your reaction time. Very clicky set

Great input guys- much appreciated
I have narrowed it down to scrapper /willpower and will try different primaries out. Have done a little testing with a Elec/ and it seemed good, but I only had time to get it up to lvl 6 so I guess I will have to wait and see. Will try other primaries as well (I also think I'm kinda hooked on Aoe's so it'll be a set with lots of those)
again many thanks for the quality responses

Hi
I recently started playing and have my first lvl 50 a DS/DM MM which I love. While waiting for the next incarnate stuff to be released I would like to build a hero to play when bored with the MM.
As a new player I really don't have any overview over all the different AT's and powersets so I've tried a few combinations but can't seem to find a build that suits me.
What I would like:
1. Hero (have played the redside and done many many ouroboros mission- so I would like to be a good guy for a change)
2. Simple playability- nice easy attack chain - not super busy secondary (preferably no stuff that need to charge by smashing mobs like the brute rage, domination stuff etc.)
3. Able to be fun while levelling up (not just have to fight through 35 levels of being a whimp until getting some über power that makes the build worthwhile)
4. Something to look forward to (kind of the opposite of #3, but there have to be some power or similar that one can't wait to have when levelling)
5. No pets (have dealt with their "AI" enough with the MM)
6. End up being very good at something (preferably not a jack-of-all-trades but good dps, good support, good tank or similar)
Super tank or glass cannon, ranged or melee, fire, ice, dark, whatever doesn't matter just the above.
I will be playing both solo and in teams.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Tom
