Resistence vs Defence

Hey guys, would anybody be willing to explain the difference between these for my next tank?

As I understand it, resistence refers to the characters ability to handle a hit of whatever description.

Defence refers to the chances of an attack successfully connecting on your character and thus causing injury.

Is this about right?

Resistance reduces incoming damage from being hit (Up to 90% for Tanks).
Defence reduces the number of hits you receive (Up to 225% for Tanks but mobs always have a 5% chance to hit you).
The Defence Soft-Cap is (usually) 45%, this means that if you have at least 45% defence then against the vast majority of mobs, they only have a 5% chance to hit you.

Resistance has the advantage that while you're getting hit a lot, your health tends to go down slowly, so you have more time to react. With Defence, you don't get hit very often, but when you do it can really hurt (especially vs AVs) because you take the full force of the attack.

Sorry if this is a stupid questions but learning acronyms was never my forte, but what does AV mean?

Also, thanks very much for the reply. Cleared up many questions I had.

Something to add to this: mobs have a (normally) 50% base chance to hit you. If you are at 90% resistance, you will take 50%tohitchance*10%postresistance=5% of the damage the mob is throwing your way. If you are at 45% defense, you will take 50%-45%=5% of the damage, so the same. Two points of resistance are roughly equivalent to one point of defense.
