Tenchi Muyo! OAV Mihoshi

Dark One

So finally got to see the 3rd OAV series which sidelines Ayeka and introduces a new character who is fine and interesting, but given that the series lasts merely 7 episodes, her plot and development are rushed through pretty horribly

Anyway, this prompted me to look at TVTropes.org and find out that Mihoshi's goofiness has something of nasty back story.

For those of us that have seen most versions of Mihoshi, we know that in OAV she's pretty lazy, friendly, goofy and unfocused on a regular basis, but who does seem to pull together in a "let's get dangerous" manner whenever she knows there's something dangerous around making her more of a genius ditz than a dumb blonde.

This is as compared to the Universe Mihoshi, which barely more than an adult child and massive trouble magnet.

Anyway, the apparent reason Mihoshi is so goofy is apparently she had a relationship with a powerful entity of some kind. There was an accident and her psyche broke as a result. She survived at all because she's descended from Washu. So apparently Mihoshi is an example of what happens when making out with cthulhu goes horribly wrong.

I thought she was all ditzy and goofy in the OVAs was because she overworked herself to the point of a mental breakdown. Thought I recall Kagato saying something like this in the first OVA.

Just rewatched the OAVs a couple weeks ago by some odd coincidence.

As i recall wasn't there also some freaking out about the level of chaos and destruction that would occur if something got through her ditziness and Mihoshi got really mad?

Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...

Not sure how cannon it is, but I recall that some novels came out some time after the OVAs were released to cover more detail in the OVA universe. One of then mentioned that Mihoshi is actually related to Washu because her family descended from the child that Washu had with the nobleman.

Washu is one of the three goddesses of the OVA universe, so it would validate Mihoshi having the blood of a deity flowing through her veins, granted it's probably been watered-down. Just not sure if it would have anything to do with her being scatteredbrained here and there.

no the blood in her veins is apparently what allowed her to survive with coming out scatterbrained rather than, say, drooling and catatonic....the part that made her scatterbrained is apparently that she had an accident in a relationship with a higher power

Well, one thing I noticed, Noike was listing off Ryoko, Ryo-Ohki, Sasami and so on and in each case, she included a definitive statement about WHY they needed to be watched.

She got to "Mihoshi Kuramitsu" and apparently felt that that name was plenty of explanation and then went one

Mihoshi is chaos-incarnate. She is the variable that can't be planned for, other than her innate unplannyness. IMO, she exists as the foil for Washu. One prizes order and logic, the other chaos and luck.

The novels you talk about are canon insomuch as they were written by the creator of Tenchi himself, Masaki Kajishima. It's been a long time since I've had Tenchi on my mind, but as I recall there were 3; one was about Washu and her history including where Kagato comes from, one was about the history of the Jurai royal family, and one was about... well, I can't remember now. I read summaries years ago, and they're all pretty interesting if you're into the OVA series. Unfortunately they were never fully translated into english.(Though if anyone knows different, do let me know!)

Of course none of this has anything to do with the other Tenchi series. Ah, the joys of multiple canons...

Tenchi - the anime where the fanfiction is about as canon as anything else
