Kinetic Melee vs. Energy Melee

I know, I know, EM isn't a scrapper set (yet), but I feel like all the best number crunchers hang out here. Conceptually and visually, both work for my character, and they actually seem like really similar sets.

Both do a mix of smashing and energy damage
Both stun
Concentrated Strike is pretty much a clone of Total Focus.

So how do I choose between the two? How do they fare in terms of top performance DPS? Who does better at AoE?

If you are waiting for EM to be a scrapper set, be glad you are sitting. My guess KM is the devs giving scrappers EM without doing so. Both will be ST heavy with low AoE. Energy is more burst based as where KM is going to be more DPS based. I think a happy middle ground is KM on a stalker since BU replaces PS and CS can recharge BU just like it recharges PS on a scrapper. While my highest KM is 12 so my opinion is narrow on the feel of the animations, I can't stand TF's animation and KM so far flows rather well. I will say both sets have a throw away power, but I can at least on some level see taking Repulsing Torrent to be used how I tend to use Shockwave on my Claws/regen. Stun? Meh.

EM has really bad damage all over. >.>

Your character does not have capped defense. Depending on your AT the cap is between 175% - 225%. Your defense is not teal in the combat window, it can go higher. STOP SAYING IT IS CAPPED! The correct term is Soft Cap.
I enjoy playing in Mids. I specialize in Melee Characters, other AT's usually bore me.

It's true. But for the first 10 seconds of a fight it puts out some very pretty orange numbers.

Also, KM has a fair bit of knockdown as well, and a unique power boost power that can help you do some nice damage in a hurry.

I do wish they would make Repulsing Torrent knockDOWN not knockBACK though...

Is EM really that bad? I remember it putting out some solid numbers on BillZ's "the results are in" threads and it seems capable of solid enough DPS. Is this hate mostly directed at AoE or what?

EM's AoE is bad, and its ST damage is OK at best. Other powersets can get similar or greater damage without the massive health penalty EM implies.

The -health is often downplayed, but it's essentially like losing ~200% regen. Obviously, it will matter much more on builds like Invul, Shield or SR than Willpower or Dark Armor, but it's there.

I like it on my tanker for burst damage. There's really nothing wrong with a tanker doing 1000 damage in the 10 second window of build up. Depending on resistances and bruising it can even be upwards of 1200. It's fun but not exactly sustainable.

I think it's better than people give it credit for, still hurt over the changes to energy transfer, but still middle of the pack at best. Everything recharges slowly.

On Stalkers, EM's DPS seemed to beat out KM's by a significant amount.

Of course, that's on Stalkers, who don't have Power Siphon.

If I remember right, BillZ's numbers for EM included Gloom in the attack chain.

Yes, it really is that bad. As mentioned in the thread, you pay about a 200% regen penalty (I'm not certain as to the accuracy of that number, but having played a few em toons, I do know for a fact it does a decent amount of self damage every time you use it...) to do single target damage that is on par with many other sets that suffer no penalty at all, and more importantly, em is one of the more pitiful aoe sets.

The better attacks animate very slowly, which means on teams, you'll be wasting them on corpses. But as an added bonus, when you smack a corpse with ET, you still at least get to do damage to self...

Is it unplayable? Of course not. But it underperforms against pretty much every set in almost every category.
