Can't get today's patch to load.

I keep getting a message around the 71% point that says, "Cannot create a file when that file already exists."

When I hit the Repair button, I get a second error message that says, "Access to the path is denied."

This only happened on my home computer. When I ran the patch on my laptop at work, it worked fine.

Anyone else have, or had, a similar problem?

YES!! I am having the same issue and I cannot figure out how to fix it. Can anyone help with this issue?? I receive a window stating:

City of Heroes encountered an error last time it tried to perform an operation. Repairing may help resolve the issue.

Access to the path is denied.

I have tried repairing and it still does not work.

Any help would be appreciated,
Thanks.

Well it may be the new launcher, I used the old one and I am able to log on just fine. I still would like to know what needs to be done to have the new launcher work though.

I had this problem as well. In order to fix it, completely close the NCSoft launcher (you have to go to the icon on the taskbar and select Exit to do this, not just X out of it). Then go to the CoH Folder, delete the ~PS folder, and the two Patch files in the main directory (they have very long names). Restart the NCSoft launcher and it should download and patch normally with no issues.

I'm getting the same problem. Tried the delete method, but it it still errors out during install. Does anyone know where to get the old updater? I foolishly got rid of it when I upgraded to the launcher.

old.CohUpdater.exe should be in the City of Heroes directory if you want to run the COH Updater.

I want to make a snarky comment about this. It seems suspiciously like the game developers got the new updater crammed down their throat when the old updater worked perfectly well for the tasks it had to accomplish (a. update the updater when necessary, b. patch the game c. display a webpage, and d. launch the game.)

Let me also offer a bit of advice. I ran into the same problem these guys are describing, but under Win 7x64. I got around it by right clicking on the launcher icon and selecting 'Run as Administrator'.

It may have worked, but the old updater was a piece of junk compared to the new one.

You realize that the bugs being found were specifically tested in Beta and were not seen there, right? This is because Beta and Live are two different environments, and stuff that seems fine in Beta with a few hundred or thousand testing it can break with a few hundred thousand in a slightly different environment.

Those sound like diametrically opposed statements there.

That's probably the root of the problem. If neither the old nor new updaters are working, I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest neither one is the problem. Most likely it's related to UAC. Windows Vista's version of UAC is notoriously more finicky than the one in Windows 7.

If you don't feel like turning UAC off, I would suggest installing (or moving) COH (and any other MMOs with an updater actually) into a folder that is NOT in the "Program Files" folder. Window's UAC feels like it has to control or at least monitor EVERYTHING inside the "Program Files" folder. If you make a "Games" folder in the root of your C: (or other) drive and install all you MMO games there, UAC has MUCH less involvement with the things that go on in that folder.
