Hey Seven I saw you talking about this the other night. Grats on getting a new laptop.

I've been talking with Seven about this laptop for a few weeks. I have a Toshiba that I got last year that I love greatly! But mine has a dedicated NVidia card with 1G of Video Ram. It works fantastically for CoH.

It's really whether if Seven wants to get one locally to him and have it almost instantly (which is what's pictured in the link) or if he wants a dedicated graphics card that he'd have to order the system off the internet and wait a week or so for it to arrive.

After gaming on two laptops with integrated graphics cards, I would personally (and did last year) order the one off the internet with the dedicated card. But I also understand the great joy of going to the store and getting it NOW! =)

I played quite well on my old laptop with an integrated graphics card that used shared RAM... until it died (HP Processors had an overheating issue on that model I had). I did notice lag issues in zones during raids and invasions. But usually turning the graphics down fixed that.

If Seven is going to go with the one linked above with the shared graphics card RAM, I would suggest he look into how much more RAM for the system would be. If it's a LOT more, I would suggest ordering online and getting a dedicated graphics card. If it's NOT a lot more, eh, why not?

From what he's said to me, I think either version will be a wonderful upgrade from the setup he's using now, and the ability to play anywhere will be fantastic for him.

Congrats Seven =)

Can't go wrong with a Toshiba.

Just an FYI, Tosiiba's require only Kingston memory you cannot use any other type. Also, download the tech user guide manual and turn off the feature called "zooming utility". It will make your life miserable.

Toshiba's are the best computers for the money once you turn that off.

This is a good computer, the video doesn't make a huge difference in this game. I have another laptop computer or "mobile workstation", an HP 8740w. I paid 20k for it. It has a 2GB nvidia Quadro video and 32GB of RAM. With CoH, I still have all the same problems I had on my $298 emachines laptop. $699 is a good balance. Ultramode is marketing in my humble opinion but you'll get it with this.

Tell that to people I know who've had issues getting support from Toshiba. Like people who bought the first-gen Satellite Pro series.

This is flat out wrong, and not true.

Take the OP's linked laptop.

There's a reason why Crucial says "GUARANTEED compatability."

And, likely, several other manufacturers produce parts work perfectly fine with the Toshiba too.

Yes and no. If he's gaming in Standard Mode, yeah, this'll run "okay".
If he's looking to do Ultra Mode though, FUHGEDDABOUDIT.

The only real plus it has going for it is the "It's cheap" angle.

Your information is incorrect. I will make these comments and then I'm not posting again.

In December, I bought a new Toshiba Quad to experience ultramode and to be able to run Vmware. I required at the time an Intel chip that supports "VT." I bought third party memory and my computer flipped out. I contacted Toshiba. They asked me some questions then shipped a box UPS second day and I sent them the laptop back.

After the tech looked at it(1 day), he sent the laptop back 2nd day (less than 5 days total)and emailed me. He said that the memory I had in the computer was unsupported by Toshiba and invalidates the warranty. I asked him what memory doesn't invalid the warranty. He said Toshiba private labels Kingston. I bought Kingston memory on ebay and have never had problems again. I have the tech's email if you want to verify my story.

Also, my laptop has a low level Intel HD graphics cards using shared memory and I was able to get Ultramode with it. I had to upgrade to the latest "Intel" windows display drivers though. I had to manually uninstall the windows update drivers to make this all work. The video card listed above should have no problems whatsoever running ultramode because it is way superior to one I have.

Also, Consumer Reports in December rated Toshiba's "Best Buy" in several categories.

Please try this against someone who hasn't got 30+ years of buying, building and servicing computers under their belt.

Were you not "not posting again" I'd ask who was the third part you bought the memory from? And did you research it to make sure it was the proper type and timing for the machine?

Simply because Toshiba private labels Kingston memory doesn't mean only Kingston memory works in the machine.

If you took this way from the conversation with the technician, you either misunderstood or were being sold a bill of goods. Likely you bought the wrong type/speed of memory

If "only" Kingston memory worked, you wouldn't see pages specifically devoted to it on the sites of other memory wholesalers. Especially ones GUARANTEEING compatibility.

Hey, Hyperstrike, do me a favor, contact this vendor and find out why their $hit didn't work on my laptop. I'd contact them but Ebay booted them off their site after my transaction.

Greetings!
Please include this RMA# R225739 on the outside of the package.
You may send it back to:

We will issue a refund after the memory is received. If you like to get the money faster, please got to HELP on eBay and click RESOLUTION CENTER and file a case requesting a refund. Ebay will address this faster since our account is not active and the refund will be issued with a few days.
Thank You

Here is my last email communication with the vendor:

Who am I speaking with now? I noticed the email name changed. Who is Omni Technologies and how do you relate to Upgradetronix?

I'm pretty angry with this deal. I don't understand why this memory won't work. Before I bought this memory, I specifically called and talked/asked your sales guy if this would work with my model and he said yes. What brand of memory is this specifically? I purchased a new laptop and this thing is flipping out with this memory. It reboots. I've lost data. I'm having a hard time dealing with Toshiba to get any resolution. I sent my laptop to them to get this resolved and they said it's the memory but I just can't believe this.

Toshiba recommends Kingston Memory. What kind of memory do you use? What could be causing this problem? This computer has been useless a month. I have to get to the bottom of this.

In January 2011, I purchased 2 KINGSTON KTT1066d3/4G 4GB DDR3 Laptop Memory Modules and the Laptop is problem free.

Translation: Instead of buying from a large vendor (like Newegg) or directly from a bulk manufacturer like Micron/Crucial, you:

  • Bought Brand X memory
  • Through some small 3rd party
  • Over EBay

Again, the problem is the fly-by-night you bought from selling you crap, rather than your Toshiba "requiring" Kingston RAM.

The only thing I saw that might cause a bit of a slow down is the 5400 rpm hard drive. Depending on the model, these could affect program loads/performance. As a scratch disk for photoshop, an hi-res image rotation takes 30% longer on a system with a 5400 rpm drive vs one with a 7200 rpm drive.
However, if the drive has good caching/access time, you won't notice the difference unless you look.
