Again: Launcher Issue
Okay, this is a very very strange issue I am having with our new lovely launcher.
It works great for loading up regular CoH.. but thats not where the problem is. Trying to load up Beta, I follow the beta guide (copy launcher, add the /runbeta thing to it, install) . Beta installs. But will beta run when I hit run? Nope! Will it run CoH? Yep! So, I hit the run button .. get the little loading bar that says "launching" up to 100%... and it doesn't open the game. I've hit repair, I've reinstalled both launcher and CoH Beta and yet this still does not work. So far, I am sad cause of this ): Any of you fellow CoHers know how to fix this? ---- I just find it completely strange that I can run CoH perfectly fine, the bar loads the game launches, where as when I try to do Beta it does not launch. -Yes beta is open tomorrow, BUT I just want to know that I can infact launch up the game for that.. figured I better check now. |
You want to start the Beta install first.
Let it establish the directory and all.
Then KILL IT WITH FIRE (stop the install).
Then just swap the PIGG files and delete the CHECKSUM file.
Then restart the beta download. You should only need to snag the diffs from there.
Th
If I stop the install, it deletes the folder.
I suppose after this installs for the third time, I will just try switching (I hope you mean copy the RegCoH piggs to BetaCoH and overwrite), and deleting the Checksum .. and then try restarting the beta download and hopefully it works :/
I don't want to start a new thread about this, but is there any advantage to running the launcher? I only play CoX and I see all of the problems that people are having and I was just wondering...
edit: never mind, just read the FAQ and saw that it's going to be mandatory in the future...
Hyper, I did what you said to do: however installing beta is not the issue, the thing is installed took a matter of 30 minutes to do. It is that when I actually RUN the beta, the bar loads and then it seems as if it cancels/closes itself when it hits 100% resulting in me not being able to launch the gosh darn program.
I was looking forward to visiting beta, but it appears the set-up is not currently working for me. Then again, I could never get beta to work before this launcher change, even if I set the game to install in a different directory it would revert to installing right on top of my existing Live files. Now I have beta installed and it just won't OPEN.
Anybody else have anything else to suggest before I give this up as a 'lost-cause' ?
-Currently I have installed CoH Beta three times normally, once by just copying pigg files and deleting checksum although that actually took LONGER than installing regularly, so I do not see the point in doing as such
I purchased a new laptop last weekend and cheated to install Live, Beta and Test. Had no issues with the installs or the launcher. Here's how I did it. Please note, the new laptop is Windows 7, so there could be small differences for XP or Vista.
First, I copied over my Live, Test and Beta folders from my desktop. That took a while, even through the Gig switch and Gig connections. I set the properties for these folders to give me full permissions.
In the following steps, anytime I mention running any of the installers (even by the shortcut) it is always by right-clicking them and selecting Run As Administrator. Thanks to Arcanaville for pointing out what I left out here.
Then I copied the old updater to the desktop and created a shortcut to it on the desktop. I did this so that I wouldn't get folder permission errors when trying to run it from inside the folder it was updating. I started the old updater using that shortcut, pointed the installer to the Live folder and let it run long enough to create the registry entries and then stopped it.
I then went to the properties for that shortcut and added -test to the end of the Target line. I started from the shortcut, pointed the installer to my Test installation and let it run long enough to create the registry entries and then stopped it.
I then went back to the properties for that shortcut and changed the -test to -beta. I started from the shortcut again, pointed the installer to my Beta installation and let it run long enough to create the registry entries and then stopped it.
At this point I deleted the updater and the shortcut from the desktop. I also deleted the shortcut that the Live installation put on the desktop.
Then, I downloaded and installed the new Launcher. Once the Launcher was installed I used the shortcut it created on the desktop. It found all three directories correctly and did some minor patching. I tested to make sure that all three would launch correctly and let me in to the right servers, then created shortcuts for each of them by right-clicking on the name of each installation in the Launcher window and selecting Create Desktop Shortcut.
Then I tested each of the new shortcuts. All worked as they should.
Hopefully others will be able to use these steps to resolve their problems.

If you're running from Windows 7 or Vista, have you tried running the launcher as administrator, and then trying to relaunch the beta from it?

Thanks for the reminder Arcanaville. I'll go edit my post.

I must really have a unique error here, I'll just file it into the "lost-cause" section of my imaginary filing cabinet.
Beta is perfectly installed, has all the files in there.. run the in-launcher "fix" assuming this would help and it did not.
I install like how you did Texas, just of course using XP instead of 7.
But, when ever I cancel the download - it deletes the whole entire folder, so I cannot do the 'minor' fixes as they are non-existent.
Thanks anyways!
If the "Repair (Consistency Check)" comes back clean for Beta and the game still does not come up for you, it may be a problem with the default graphics settings.
Have you tried enabling "Safe Mode" for Beta?
(right click on the game in NCsoft Launcher and go to "Properties" and check the "Launcher in Safe Mode" box)

Something you could try would be to start the updater as above and cancel it after a couple of minutes and THEN create the folder again and copy the contents of the other computers installation to it. It's doubtful that when you cancel the install and the folder is deleted that it's also deleting the registry entries, and that's the main thing I use the cohupdater for initially.
Of course, for me at least, if all else fails I have several installation disks (Original CoH disc, CoV disc, GvE disc, AE disc, GR disc, and at least one Bootleg Edition that I don't want to open since Ex Libris signed it) that I've gathered over the years. I can use them to do the initial installation and then copy over the files from the other computer to get the installation current. If I were to do that today on a computer I'd use the GR disc since it's the most current, but any would work.
If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

I went back to the beginning of the thread and reread your initial post, and something jumped out at me that I didn't catch before.

I know it isn't in the instructions from the Beta forums or in the instructions on the Announcements section. I'm wondering if this is what's causing your problems.

I think we are a bit confused about which launcher he is using. I'm under the assumption that he is try to using NCsoft Launcher based on the first sentence of the original post. But, the steps Texas Justice described are for CohUpdater.
EDIT: But, "/runbeta" is relevant to neither NCsoft Launcher nor CohUpdater. To install the Beta from within NCsoft Launcher, just click on the "CITY OF HEROES BETA" entry in NCsoft Launcher and click the "INSTALL GAME" button. You can use the "Customize" button to set a specific location to install to if you have copied the live folder and want to try to patch it up.
My instructions were for a quick setup where CoH hasn't been installed before using files copied from another computer (be it upgrading, using a second running computer, whatever) and THEN using the NCLauncher to patch up to current and creating shortcuts.
It can be used as instructions for copying files on the same machine as well and creating a Test or Beta install before using the NCLauncher.

Sorry for confusing wording, and lack of response.

Okay, I am using the NcSoft Launcher and was following the steps below:
HOW TO ACCESS THE BETA TEST SERVER WITH A PC - IF YOU HAVE THE NCSOFT LAUNCHER
1. Run NCsoft Launcher shortcut to get the latest update.
2. The NCsoft Launcher will start.
3. Create a copy of the NCsoft Launcher desktop shortcut.
4. Right click on the new shortcut and open the Properties option.
5. In the Target window, add the following flag to the end of the line:
[space]/LaunchGame=CohBeta
6. Run the shortcut.
7. The NCsoft Launcher will open, starting a City of Heroes Beta installation.
8. Click Install.
9. If you are on Windows Vista or Windows 7, confirm the UAC prompts. (if UAC is turned on).
10. After the installation completes, double-click CITY OF HEROES BETA in the NCsoft Launcher’s games list to play.
(Of course in my initial post I did not have the correct tagline there, but it is something that these instructions said to do in this thread http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=254362)
-----
Following the above instructions I obtain all the Beta files, and also the short-cut on my desktop. I open my un-tagged copy of the NcSoft launcher, and try and run the CoH Beta which is installed now.
This is where the problem was, it acts as if it is going to launch - When using the launcher, there is a small loading bar that appears when you hit "play", this bar loads and the Beta does not launch.
Now, I have given up on trying to get this to work as I ended up going over my monthly allowance of Download space trying to get this to work. Figuring i20 will be launching soon, I gave up on trying to get the program to work.

Thanks however for your time, and I again apologize for my very very confusing confusing wording!
