I remember when I was kid and we had -42C. It was cold but still I walked to school.

This winters cold record of Finland is -41,3 celsius in Salla. Thats one small town in Lapland.
edit. if you look at cold records you can see −51.5 °C (−60.7 °F) in Kittilä, Lapland

One old laplandian guy told he remember that and mercury thermometers just got frozen but spirit based thermometers indicated -51 Celsius and that was cold.

Going to the opposite end of the scale, I remember it getting to about 45c in the summer where I grew up in Australia (Deniliquin). We used to be sent home from school when it hit 42c.
Since I've been in the UK (1989) the lowest I've experienced is -11c and that was December last year. That was cold enough for me thanks!

Not that shocking ot be honest.... water of *any* depth without an outside source of heating will have a region that is 4C (useless but interesting fact). So even if the surface is frozen over, there will be a layer of water that is 4C

Hi all.
It's matter of clothing of course but human body can adapt into cold. Now I'm just laughing at -5 of last fall and that felt chilly 
I have to say human body is amazing. -20c does not feel anything after a couple of weeks of -30c. Actually -20c is pretty comfortable now
