Summer Wars - No Spoilers Please

Okay.

Yesterday, the weekly Anime at the Alamo event ran a showing of Madhouse Studios' "Summer Wars"

Normally this is an event that involves us heckling the first four episodes of a Funimation anime and deciding whether or not we like the series enough to buy it. And just hanging out with people watching anime on a theater screen while servers bring you food and drinks. (Free refills at theater! W00T)

anyway....this night the event runners demanded a run-silent time and considering they're both fairly enthusiastic about the heckling being fun, we listened.

and it was glorious.

I am stuck here because I went into it with no knowledge of what the plot, theme or storyline involved and I think that is an element (along with the big screen deal) in how much I enjoyed it.

I want to recommend it.

I so very, VERY much recommend it. It certainly should appeal to most people that play MMOs at least.

But I don't want to give away any spoilers or plot.

Ideally, you go, look for it and watch it without looking up what its about or any trailers on youtube and let your first exposure be the movie as a whole.

seriously.

don't spoil it for yourself.

Just find it and watch it.

Anybody who's seen it please chime in and support me here in this recommendation.

Again, please don't spoil anything here.

Just add your recommendations.

I'll second the recommendation. Summer Wars was a surprisingly engrossing show which quickly drew me into caring about the characters without ever really telling us about them.

It's a true student of the "show, don't tell" method of establishing character relationships and backgrounds which I found very enjoyable.

I just recently finished watching it and can also recommend it.

There's a sticky thread you 'might' want to add this show to.

Saw it a little while ago with a friend at their house.
I certainly enjoyed the ride.

I definitely agree with the statement about its characters. It doesn't really tell you who they are, but it shows you who they are quite well, and it' very engrossing in that way. You can feel attached and 'there' quite easily. The settings and designs were really nice, most obviously prominent in the MMO realm. Some nice crowning moments of awesome, too.

The scene at the very end made me and my friend do a major lolwut, though. Massive spoiler if I say more.

As I said in the anime thread, IMO, it's good, but not great nor worthy of some of the hype it seems to have recieved. I'm not sure if I can really explain why, other than to say that was lacking that intangible "it" that makes a film great. Perhaps at times it was a bit too much of a kids film (I probably would've loved it were I 13-14) That said, it's still worth checking out as there's a hell of a lot worse ways to spend a couple of hours of your life
