Replacement for a GeForce 8800 GTS?

That is going to be a problem. Heck, I'm pretty sure that your 8800 was being held back by that sweaty John Prescott of a processor.
There's a slim chance that it can be upgraded to a Core 2 Duo, but I doubt it. There was only a brief window of P4 boards which accepted C2Ds.
Leaving your CPU aside, I reckon any GPU that costs more than $150 will best your 8800GTS. Look for a GeForce 460 or thereabouts. You don't really tend to get your money's worth for anything less.

A GeForce 460 1GB will do you well, that's about $200. Is that within your budget?

The 460 is so 5 months ago. Get a 560 
Its a better card than the 460.

You know, I have that same old card. It's still chugging along, but I have considered replacing it. I swapped it in for the piece of crap that came with the machine, my first time performing such an operation. My main obstacle in the process was that the 8800 barely fit in the space in the machine, and as it was I had cords pulled over areas that I thought they would be better clear of. But it all has worked fine anyway.
Are the newer cards, the 540 for example, much bigger in physical size than the 8800? Because if so, I'm not sure how I would ever get it to fit in that space.

my GTX460 is a double slot card (so it takes up 2 backplates), but is actually *shorter* than my 8800GT (if only just). My GTS250 is single backplate (but double thick in the middle due to cooler) and pretty short(ish)
I replaced my 8800 GTS with a 460 and it works like a dream. Needs two slots but damn does it make the City and the Isles look so pretty now.

the second PC vid card has gone out.
The card is a NVidia GeForce 8800 GTS. The machine has a Core 2 Duo 3.16 Ghz processor and and 4 GB RAM (running Win XP) and a 460W power supply.
What would be a good replacement for this old card?
