Breaking news: "My computer is DEEEEADDDD!!!"

The main box I use to play CoH went bad this morning. A visit to the repair shop confirmed a surge of some sorts hit the computer, warping the AC (which works but fluctuates) and hitting the motherboard in such a way that a new AC can't power it up.

Considering the cost of a new motherboard (plus the fact that the new boards use RAM of higher caliber), I figure I might as well build a new box from scratch. That is, if I can raise enough money to do so off my unemployment benefits.

please email me suggestions (witty AT wittylibrarian dot com) for how my CoH-based gaming PC should be built. I figure AMD motherboard, natch, with high-end AC and maxed-out RAM, but I need specifics on best graphics board, sound board, et al. Also, does CoH play on Linux (Ubuntu is freeware, ya)?

Also, the original CoH CD disks I have are from the pre-Issue 1 days and the last time I had to reinstall CoH it took days to do it with all the Issues to add. Anyone got an updated Going Rogue disk I can borrow for faster install?

That is found where you give your credit card info, etc.
But I tried to download that about 8 months ago for my son's computer and the download time was 80 hours estimate. I just installed and updated instead. But since you have 18 updates to do, it just might end up faster for you witty. (Or just have it upload overnight, which wasn't an option that I had.)

Well, not sure about 80 hours, misplaced my discs long ago as well. Got my new comp and downloaded in about 6 hours. Yes, having the GR disc would have expediated said process, but I just let it roll while I played on my other comp, patience is a virtue.

Sorry to hear that tho mang! Just happy you gave two sh*ts enough to let those who know you much better what was going on so they weren't overly worried! CuZ no matter what that's how it is on Champ, I learned that the hard way. Hope you're back up and going sooner than later..

Here's a retarded question.

Why wasn't your PC on a surge protector or UPS?

Sorry about your old system. BOO!
Congrats on your new system! YAY!

One thing. Did the hard drives from the old system survive?

If so, you can RADICALLY cut down on the amount of time spent downloading things.

  1. Get the old hard drive back up and running on another system (or via USB enclosure).
  2. Download the installer from the NCSoft site.
  3. Start the installer and wait until the launcher starts downloading stuff.
  4. Stop the installer.
  5. Copy your original CoH folder into place over the top of the clean install.
  6. Browse into the CoH folder and delete the .checksum file.
  7. Start the launcher again and let it patch. Should be a relatively tiny download if at all.

Take a look-see at Father's guides for hardware.

Best question we can ask first.
What's your budget? (Both what you'd prefer to spend (and "as little as possible" isn't an answer) and how much you can afford to "stretch" if it means getting a MUCH better machine.)

That'll determine what kind of video card to recommend.
Currently ATI has the mid-range locked up tight.
But for highest single-card performance, you're looking at nVidia.

And yes, you can run CoH on Linux (with some caveats).

Attempting to download CoH/CoV on my computer now... I wasn't able to get the old HD installed on the computer (I was told to not do that until the system was stabilized first) so I couldn't copy/paste the existing CoH into the new drive.

It's going a little faster than expected... 4 GB of RAM on a quad core Phenom AMD chip and board... Maybe 7 hours instead of 16 like last time. ;-)

I will post the specifics of the new machine once I get it set.

Right now, the worst thing is: my old laserjet 1000 won't install a printer driver to Win 7. Good thing my laptop can, otherwise my ability to print more resumes for job hunting would be hurting for awhile...

It was on a surge protector. It still didn't protect it.

One thing I've learned from my A+ cert studies: nothing is fully protected or foolproof.

I am very frustrated with the speed of downloading anymore...

Okay, I got the system stabilized and I've now added my old hard drive to the system... copied/pastes CoH over the re-installed CoH... removed checksum file... relaunched the installer...

And it's STILL gonna take 7-8 hours from now to patch.

Okay, to any game devs reading this: seriously, you should send gratis new backup copies of CoH/CoV with each major launch like Mission Architect and Going Rogue... because us old-timers have these major reload issues each time we get a new PC! Grrrrrrrr.

Yikes Witty. Good thing you typed that early in the morning because you should be all patched by now.

Good news: the game finally patched (once the sound files were fixed the rest of the updater raced to the finish line in SECONDS) and I was able to log on for the weekly Tanker Tuesday...

and now it seems like my heat sink/CPU is running too hot.

I mentioned in-game that the CPU temp was reading 59-60 degrees Celsius... I've asked around, and it seems the heat sink uses grease as the contact to the CPU, whereas paste would knock up to 5 degrees C off the temp reading.

My other option would be to add ANOTHER fan to the mid-tower (there are two vents on top, one looks like it can take a fan mount...). But I'll see about getting paste between the sink and CPU first...

Check the seating of the heatsink. Also, what kind of heatsink are you using? And does it have a fan built onto it or are you trying to use a huge passive one and case air flow?

Actually paste/grease makes almost zero difference. Just make sure you're using a decent brand from a reputable company. The only time you're really worried about it is when you start futzing around with overclocks. If you put too MUCH of either on, or it's spread unevenly, yeah, that'd account for higher temps.

Realistically, you probably won't notice an extra 120mm fan much.

Here some free unsolicited advice....

A) Yes Witty, you are right! There is no such thing as 100% protected on anything. Whether it be surge protectors, Antivirus, passwords, anything. However, with surge protectors, the adage "you get what you pay for" is true. A $5 Surge Protector is not going to perform like a $40 APC 2500 Joules Surge Suppressor. Also, I invested in a Tripp-Lite Line Conditioner, and made sure my UPS had Line Conditioning and it has done wonders on my PCs. When I moved, I forgot to move my Hackintosh (custom built Core 2 Quad running Mac OSX 10.6.4) to one of the Line Conditioned units, and a week later the Power Supply was nicely toasted.
Learn the benefits of the Sine-Wave, and your advanced electronics will thank you.

B) When it comes to CPUs, if you aren't over-clocking, I like to stick to the one the manufacturer includes, BUT, I never use the included Thermal Paste. I spent the cash and get the one, the only, Arctic Silver 5, It''s expensive, but it works, and it's cheaper than replacing CPUs for overheating. I have gotten upto 10 degrees cooler temperatures with the same heatsink over the included paste.
