Coming back to the game and starting over on Freedom.

Howdy all! After being gone for awhile due to some health issues, and still dealing with severe back pain, I am coming back to CoX. I was originally on Champions but I am starting over on Freedom since it seems to fit my playstyle due to it having a larger playerbase and there seems to always be someone to team up with.

I have a lvl 10 Necro/Dark Mastermind that I really like and will probably get him up first before working on anything else... but this game turned me into an altoholic so sometimes I get in the mood to play a different powerset. Since I do not have a lvl 20+ Villain my Necro/Dark MM will be going that route so that I can unlock the other two Villain powersets. Once I do that I will try out the Spider Powerset. For Hero side I will make a Warshade, I played around with him on Champion and I had a lot of fun.

I will probably look for a Supergroup later on once I get my character at a higher level, hopefully on both Hero and Villain side. My Global name is @Wyattearp so shoot me an invite to a group or just a simple "hi" if you want lol. Thank you for taking the time to read my post, take care!

Welcome back to the game, and to Freedom. I started on Liberty and moved to Freedom when my SG migrated during the Going Rogue free server transfers. Freedom is a good place and very active. We have our share of idiots, but they seem concentrated in Atlas Park for the most part . Red side tends to be a bit friendlier (ironic) but it is harder to find a team as most people seemed to have switched to blue side. My global is @Guardian Irish-Fury, feel free to shot me a tell or an invite anytime. I am in a large and very active hero side SG called Valhalla's Guard if you are interested, but I'll leave the hard core recruiting for another time.

Lol, there are always going to be a few idiots in an MMO. Some have more idiots than others though, i am sure some people will know which game I mean. :P

And thank you for letting me know that your SG is recruiting and that it is very active. My only question about your SG is are your looking mainly for "Harcore" PvE and/or PvP players? I plan on playing about 2-4 hours a night, if I can log on, and 4+ on the weekend. Right now I am Beta testing a new MMO coming out so my time is limited when the beta starts, which Beta Part 5 starts tomorrow.

While we do have a few "powergamers" in our SG, it is a very casual play friendly group. The only activity rule we have is that you log in to your toon at least once every ten days. Beyond that, it's your subscription, play it as often as you like. Aside from very early in the morning, and very late at night, it is extremely rare for us not to have more than a few players on at all times. At peak times being somewhere around 6-11PM est, it isn't uncommon for us to have 15-20 people logged in. We generally do some kind of SG activitly every evening whether it be TFs, Trials, or sometimes just casual radio missions. We are mainly a PvE group, but recently we have had a spike in PvP activity. We started up about 6 months ago (after migrating from Liberty) and are currently ranked #11 on the server, a feat we are very proud of . We have a core group of 5 leaders who are very knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, and easy to approach, as well as a vent server that is very active and full of comedians. We do NOT take this whole thing seriously. It is a video game, and we are here to have fun. If you are going to be in game tonight say 7ish, I'll be happy to give you a base tour. Check out www.valhallasguard.com for more details and info.

If you plan on playing a villain, I can invite you to Dark Kingdom. DK has a lot of members, so if you need an invite to DK or its other branches, just ask in Cap Au Diable. I'm usually on after 8 PM weekdays playing Avsolut Zer0, Voltez Y or Dominura.

I wish more "guilds" would have that same attitude. It is so rare to find a group of players that have the same thinking. Thank you for the reply back and the info on your Supergroup. The PvE is what I am mainly into, I am not afraid to say that I am terrible at PvP. I have tried all kinds of PvP and I am just not good, once in a blue moon I will have a really nice kill count.

Again thank you for the info and invite, if I choose to go with Hero side first then I would like to join your SG. Just by your posts alone show that you are a great group of people.

Thank you for the info! If I decide to go Villain first I will look you guys up. I really don't want to play both sides at the same time, but this game makes it hard for me to choose lol.

I am not a PvPer either. I can't justify the investment it takes to be competitive in PvP zones.

It is tough to choose one side over the other. I started on hero side, just because I am a Superman freak, and wanted to have that iconic hero experience, but I have since gotten into playing villain side a bit more. Both have their pros and cons, but I tend toward hero side, if only because of the higher population.

If you go to Villain side first, Dark Kingdom seems to be a fine group. I don't have any toons in their SG, but have teamed with some of their members and had a grand ol' time. My main prolem with villain side is that the zones seem to be harder to navigate unless you have fly or super jump, but I am sure that is a result of my own deficiency.

I hear ya. I have always been into Batman just because he is different than most heroes since he does not have any "super powers", he uses the tools he has on him and his knowledge.

I will probably start off Hero first and when I feel like playing something else I will mess around on Villain side to keep things fresh. Plus thanks to the new Dual Pistol powerset I can make my Wyatt Earp character, lol. On Champion he was using a machine gun >.< lol. Plus I really want to start up a Warshade soon, I don't know what it is but I really love that Archetype.

I've never played a Warshade, but my buddy and I were going to make a Khedian duo and give them a try. Let me know when you get ready to roll your Warshade, and the three of us can run some stuff. I have a lvl 7 dual pistols corruptor in Praetoria right now named Cobalt-Cowboy, and he is a blast so far. I've seen a lot of people say DP is underpowered, but it sure is fun. I have all 14 character slots filled, so I know all about altaholism, lol.

If you haven't made a Praetorian character yet, I would recommend it. The story arcs are very good, and it's a nice change of pace from hero/villain. I jotted your global name down, so I'll add you tonight and shoot you a tell if I see you and we can run some stuff if you like.

Travel tip if you play Villain:
Before you make your ebil one, email yourself at least 10k inf. After you land in Mercy, go to the chopper behind Kalinda. Take it to Grandville. Stay on the main road and head towards the statue of Lord Recluse. Before his statue is a Jetpack Quartermaster. Click on the Raptor pack to buy it. You will hear a 'bing' sound that indicates your purchase is complete. If you don't see the jetpack in your tray, click on Powers. From the Temporary powers list, drag the Raptor pack to your tray and you're good to go!
For quick cash, open a few presents to get a candy cane or do a mission from FatherTime. Candy canes sell for 50-100k a piece.

After six months playing red side, I had given up on finding the jetpack supplier. Thank you so much for this tid bit.

Thank you very much for the advice! I never knew that you could buy a jetpack and that the chopper could take you to another area.

I think the chopper didn't used to take you there, it was one of the new QOL changes in I19. I actually just learned that that specific chopper is usable now based on this post. That's good information right there.

A good time was had by all in Praetoria last night. I got my dp/kin corr, Cobalt-Cowboy, from lvl 7 to 14!

Yes it was! It was fun to be in a group on my Necro/Dark. I still need to work on my micro management though. My pets kept wandering off into another group of mobs, even when I tried to stop them from running into the other group it took forever before they obeyed the command. Thats my only complaint with the melee Mastermind pets. I like playing my Necro but it can be a pain sometimes.

This is one of many reasons I don't play masterminds. I made a necro, deleted at lvl 10. I made a bots, deleted at lvl 28. I made a demons, deleted at lvl 16. I prefer to do the fighting myself, and got extremely frustrated with the AI. I am willing to concede that it was likely my own lack of skill that made this AT unplayable to me, but no fun nonetheless.

Yea, the highest I got was around 25 on a Necro/Dark on Champion back in 08. Soloing as a Mastermind is fun and easy, but when it comes to grouping I worry about them not accepting my commands quick enough and it wipes the group. They did pull some groups to us a few times but with all of the heals flying around we survived lol. But once my MM gets to lvl 20 I will be making the Spider AT on Villain side, after seeing him in action last night I really wanted to play it.

Just interjecting here.

1. Wyatt, welcome to Freedom.

2. Irish: The best way to manage MM pets is to treat them like fingers of your hand. If you leave them on Defensive or Aggressive and you're not retooling them regularly, then you're asking for a world o' trouble.

I keep them in Defensive (for Bodyguard bonuses), but I'm always giving them a target to lump their attacks. I keep them near me for proximity bonuses/ancillary defense (my main MM's a bots/traps, for instance, so I'll have FFG running as well as a few Poison Traps/Acid Mortars during a hazardous fight). Keeping them near you means you're using your minion cone attacks more logically, instead of trying to imagine where your pet is vs the target all the time.

When a target goes down, I hit ESC, then TAB (to target the closest enemy), then redirect them to drop THAT target. The idea is to always be flushing the closest threats first, working my way outward. Minions to bosses last about 1 second vs 5 seconds depending on the boss.

The system works well for me for my other MM builds (thugs/poison, demon/thermal), but it's in bots/traps where that method shines the most. Don't give up on Masterminds - maybe you just haven't found the right combo for you. It IS a harder AT to play than the others, but no other class comes close to effective mob sweeping than a horde of crazed minions.

Thank you for the warm welcome! ^^

And the advice you gave to "Irish" will help me a lot. I do have one question though, I may be doing something wrong but I can never seem to target a mob that is close to me when I "Tab target". I always get one that is further away, is there some setting that I need to change? I never have this issue in other MMOs, only this one.

It's new for i19. There's 2 choppers in Mercy, 1 north in the base and the other south by the ferry. You can use the choppers to go north and south and it won't reload Mercy. It's kinda like a teleport effect. It's very useful for the Operative Renault Strike force missions.
When I was on trial accnt, I would open 6 or so presents near the Arachnos base. I usually snagged a candy cane. Then I would take a swim to the PO ferry. From PO, to Cap Au Ferry. Then another swim to Rogue Is Ferry to get to Grandville. When I get there, I offer to sell my candy cane and there's usually someone willing to pay me 10-20k for my candy cane. Some kind soul even tried to give me 5 mil, but I had to explain that I had a 50k inf cap.
It takes about 5 mins, and I don't have to wait for the mayhem to get the wacky zero-g pack. The jetpack is one of the reasons why I like Villain side. To date, I have not found an equivalent usable version on hero side. I thought I found one in Pocket D, but it only last 2 mins and is grayed out on my scrapper. The villain jetpack lasts 2 hours game time and by the time it runs out, you would have leveled enough to get a travel power.
Now that the chopper is there, it's even more easier to get the jetpack.
To get a jetpack in Praetoria, go to the Trading house. In the market menu, collapse recipes->Other->Jet pack
Buy the one that has the cheapest salvage. However, this method will cost around 50k - 100k depending on salvage.
Hope this helps!

Thanks so much for the MM advice. It is an AT that seems like it would be a lot of fun, and I really want it to work. Is there any powerset combo that you would recommend for a MM newbie? I've heard bots is the best damage wise, but I'm open to anything. I also don't have a clue about synergizing the primary with a secondary. My last bots MM was /FF, which I found unbearably boring to play solo. I'll give it another go and work on strategies a bit more.

Hrm. That's why I hit the ESC key to clear my current target reticle. However, there IS a keymap you can point to "target nearest enemy" under Options, too. That would be faster, but after half a decade of MMing, I'm stubborn as heck with my methods. I'd imagine it would work in exactly the same way though.

When I picked bots/traps when COV first went live, it was to suit a theme (Supreme Soviet, a Cold War era roboticist who insists that the Iron Curtain never fell). I lucked out that the theme happened to be a heck of a combo. Traps gives bots the right balance: Some defense, some debuff, some crowd control, and really makes it a versatile combo than just straight-up buffs or debuffs from /thermal or /FF. /storm's a good combo with MM too for similar reasons. That's not to say the other powersets are any less useful, it's the playstyle that changes from a more passive role to a more dynamically aggressive one.

I have a ninjas/poison, bots/ff and my current MM is a demon/pain dom. The one I enjoyed the most was Ninjas. They have great single target damage. Plus Ninjas just rock anyways. They can get a little crazy sometimes but definetly fun. Posion also offers some nice debuffs and a heal.

Also, there is a group of us that play regularly on Mondays and Wednesdays @ 10 and 10:30 EST respectivly. It's called the Freedom Horde and the events are always posted in the forums. We also have a channel call Freedom TF Chat. We are very laid back and run arcs or TFs. We usually get enough people for 2 - 3 teams.
