When the production values started to go up on that show, the funny started to decline. It's hard to imagine it getting less funny than the Back to Earth special, though (luckily, I've avoided seeing the American attempt). So, hopefully these new episodes bring back the funny.

The problem I find with RD is that Grant AND Naylor helped make it great together. Series 3-6 was probably the best era for the show. The style remained relatively consistent over those four years too and there was a good blend of physical and mental jokes from the best scene of series 3's Polymorph; the polymorph's tightening underwear to the 'use the teleporter' from the jail in series 6's Rimmerworld.
I hope there's a better set of writing staff for this one.

Hopefully they'll get a few more good shows out of this. Classic Red Dwarf was classic.
Sadly I'm not going to be "assuming" this'll be good. I'm just going to "hope" that it will be.

I agree with the writer at io9.com, 'Back to Earth' was terrible and I hope they capture some of the magic this show had in it's prime.
