Grav/Nrg ?? Yes. No ??? what say you

looking for another new dom.. I have found that I am looking at my controllers that I never really loved and looking at Doms instead...

I had a Earth/Thermal/Fire Controller that was ok but I never really loved it. I re rolled him to a Earth/Fire/Fire Dom and I absolutely LOVE him...

So I have a Controller.. a Grav/Kin/Primal. Its ok but I now find myself wondering if I would like him better as a Grav/Nrg/Nrg...

I know Grav's limitations as a control set and this is one of the reason I am think he would even be better as a Dom...


Thoughts ??/

Mine is currently 41, and I have a blast when I'm teaming with him...I get great joy from Wormholin' mobs on top of my teammates who use mainly AoEs....plus the ST damage is great for taking out hard targets.

My honest opinion? No, he'd be *worse* as a dom. On a controller, you have a buff/debuff secondary that can partially cover for the primary's anemic control, and controllers might actually be able to put the attacks in the primary to use. A dom, on the other hand, has much less backup mitigation - basically, only whatever secondary effects his attacks and ancillary might have - and so needs his primary to actually do its job. And a dom already has attacks in his secondary, so doesn't need propel (ever) or lift (barring a pairing with /elec or /earth, with their lack of a 3rd blast).

The upshot is, if you do decide you want to play grav, play a grav controller with a carefully chosen synergistic secondary (kin would not be my choice). Storm and TA might be good, traps or dark would be awesome if only controllers had them...

very sad to hear that. I wanted to give NRG a real try but I dont want to play Fire, Earth, or Elec as I have one of each already and I have no interest in Plant or Ice with NRG.

Play /nrg with illusion whenever it finally gets ported to doms. That's what I'm going to do.

I would suggest that you give Mind/Energy a whirl then. You may like the synergy of mass layered controls that this combo can provide.

I think it would be "OK", if you are patient enough to slog to 26+ and Wormhole. Power Boost from Energy will help somewhat with Grav's anemic low level control, as will the stuns and knockback of /EN.

I've seen a lot of Gravity/Energy doms, and I can safely say that the knockback from Power Push and other powers can act like another ST hold, or even two if you're quick about it. That being said, it will also knock enemies out of their lockdown in Wormhole unless you're extremely careful.

Personally, I'd suggest either Fire, Elec, or Ice as secondaries for Gravity. Fiery and Electric Assault will add AoE damage so that you can kill groups clustered together by Wormholes all the faster. A Gravity/Ice Dominator would have less overall offensive power, but retain Power Boost, which is makes life much, much easier for a Dom.

My Fire/Elec Dominator has teamed often, in duos or trios, with a Gravity/Fire and a Gravity/Ice Dom. Between the two, I'd say that the Grav/Fire had an easier time, overall. The I18 changes have enabled them both to dramatically improve their performance (with changes in Epics allowing the /Fire to gain more damage and the /Ice to gain both damage and control), but the both of them still aren't "monster" doms, and benefit strongly from teaming with other dominators who can bring both more damage and added control.
