Scenario: You're face to face with a critter wielding a sledgehammer.

You have:
3.75% Smashing/Lethal Defense
and
3.75% Melee Defense

Which one of those defenses protects you?

Short answer: http://wiki.cohtitan.com/wiki/Defense

Long answer: Depends on the attack regardless of animation. however, I'm going to assume it's a melee attack with some form of smashing component.

Since it is melee (or melee pbaoe, doesn't matter which), melee defense will protect you. Since it does smashing damage, smash/lethal will protect you.

Does matter. Many PBAoEs (eg. Foot Stomp and clones) are coded as AoE, not Melee.

None which also has a weapon in it's animation however as far as I know. Still, the best answer is to just read that link I gave..

Doesn't matter, they are both the same value. For Defense the game looks at all the attack vectors and types and takes the matching defense value that is highest.

Thanks for the link, it is most helpful.

I see, according to the article that is true. Furthermore if your defense values were as follows:

1.75% Smashing/Lethal Defense
and
3.75% Melee Defense

The 3.75% melee defense would give you the protection.

Correct. When the values are even, I don't think anyone has really checked into which value gets applied, because it doesn't really matter. But if the values aren't exactly equal, the highest value against that attack will be used.

Whirling Mace, Whirling Axe, Whirling Sword, Ice Sword Circle...

All weapons, coded as AoE attacks.

Reiterating what's been mentioned.
If the attack is flagged smashing/melee either would apply. (the game would look for the higher number between the two.)
If the attack was flagged smashing/aoe, the smashing defense would apply.
If your defensive numbers were 3.75% S/L and 3.5% melee and the attack was flagged smashing/melee, the Smashing defense would apply.

Again, depending on how the attack was flagged the higher defensive number would apply. Hope that helps if you hadn't already sorted it out.
