Shield Background Cannot Be Seen

Hello, everyone!

A quick check showed me that a few threads have been posted on this, but they are several months old. So, I thought I'd start fresh just to see if I'm missing something.

I had it in my mind to start a new scrapper, and thought that a shield was in order. Now before I go to much further I need to tell you that I have a MA/SD scrapper that I've taken all the way to 50. I've been told that her shield with emblem is very stylish, and I have never had any problems altering it. I certainly had no problems when I created the character.

However, for reasons I can't fathom I just can't get the background to display the second color and pattern when I use the character creator. I've tried male and female body types and all of the patterns. I've also tried a variety of shield types.

None of them will display properly. I'm tempted to take the new character to Live, and see what I get. Its just hard to create a look for the character when you can't see what you are doing.

Any suggestions? I've sent a petition in and have a preliminary response, but I'm not getting a warm fuzzy from that. Has this problem really been around for 6 months or more?

I just went into the CC on a praetorian newly created character on live and I was able to create a shield with a pattern on it (cavalier > knight shield, chevron 1 > 2 colored damond emblem) in 2 colors (black/gold) and an emblem in 2 colors (white/red)

This worked for heater shields, kite shields & round shields. I was able to put a pattern only on the riot shields as thats all they'll take the other shields behaved as expected.

Perhaps it's your video driver?

I think the previous threads mention that this happens when the character texture settings are on the lower settings. However if you have the character texture settings turned up then this could be a new bug.

Father Xmas is correct, Character Textures set to low destroy most textures on most shields, only a few allow textures, if you run the game on low settings but *Could* temporarily increase just the textures, you will notice that they now have textures. It is a feature of the engine. Technically if you know what the textures look like, you could make them without seeing them, but you might get the primary/secondary colors mixed up on accident.

I hope this helps.

Hmmm. First, thank you for the insightfull replies. I appreciate the added perspective.

Well, I can try to increase my settings. However, I have recently upgraded my video card, and I've been running with the same settings for a couple of years. These are the same settings that I created my MA/SD scrapper on and that was with a lower end video card.

Also, I am able to view my lvl 50 MA/SD scrapper just fine in the character selection screen and in game. I haven't tried any changes at the Taylor to see if I lose the background pattern. I will test that next.

I will also test character creation in Praetoria instead of Paragon to see if that makes a difference.

Anyone know where the break point is for the graphic settings where the backgrounds will drop?

The video settings suddenly started mattering on Shields when Ultra Mode was introduced. It will make a difference if you bump it up a bit. It did for me.

I have concluded my test with my MA/SD scrapper. The original outfitting shows all details properly as long as I don't make any changes. When I altered one of the costume slots, the background shading would only show the primary color regardless of the background I chose. It reminds me of some of the problems I have seen when a major game update alters the manner in which certain costume pieces fit or are placed in the different parts of the body.

I do not have Ultra-mode enabled. Even with my video card updated, it might be a bit much to handle as I am running an AGP-8 video system.

My in-game graphic settings are as follows:

Particle Physics - Medium
World Texture - Medium
Character Texture - Very High
World Detail - 70%
Character Detail - 100%
Maximum Particle Count - 10,544
Environment Reflectivity - Disabled
Use Geometry Buffer - Enabled
Anisotropic Filter - 4X
Texture Crispness - Smooth
Shader Quality - Low (No World Bump Maps)
Depth of Field Effects - Disabled
Bloom Effects - None
Desaturation Effects - Diabled
Shadow Quality - Lowest
Advanced Occlusion Settings - Disabled
Ambient Occlusion - Off

Perhaps one or more those needs adjusting. Thanks for all the good feedback so far.

You don't need Ultra-Mode to see the shields effectively, so don't worry too much there.

I moved this quote up to highlight the one that needs adjusting below, in red.

Note: Your current setting should be more than sufficient, so it may be some sort of bug in your system. Perhaps you should /bug it in game. Anything higher than the lowest setting should make them better, it does on my system. (Med or some such) Though you do have to be careful using Smooth Texturing with Anistropic Filters I believe, there is little pophelps in game that state this I believe if you hover? Touch a Question mark. Not sure which, it has been a little bit since touching my settings, and I don't have the game handy at this moment.

Hope I helped, have fun and hope you can fix it.

Just wanted to update everyone.

I got a good tip from Tech Support. Increasing my setting for Shade Quality to Medium solved the problem. I am now able to see all options for Shields.

Thanks again for all the useful comments.

I just noticed something that you might find interesting.

When I changed my Shader Quality settings up to Medium I started seeing a large increase in Lag. So, I decided to see if lowering the value back down would help and it did. Then I noticed a change in the text for the different settings compared to when I first reported this problem.

It seems that with the Ultramode release there was an alteration in the basic values for each setting. My original setting for Shader Quality was "Low (No World Bump Maps)", but when I tried to revert back to that it only showed "Low" or "Very Low".

On a whim I loaded my MA/SD scrapper to see if there was any change. I had seen good results in the graphics with the Medium setting. To lower my Lag I had changed the value to Very Low. I was surprised and pleased that I could see all shield backgrounds even at the new Very Low setting.

As a final test, I went into the character creator and started a new toon with a shield. All of the options now show correctly even at this low setting. I must conclude that my original choice of setting for the Shader Quality was a legacy value that didn't work properly with the new graphic code. Just a guess really, but it works.
