Sets for an Ice\Ice Tanker

Alright So Incarnate stuff is out and it turns out my main has a ton of cash so I'm looking to go back and visit a few of my older 50s.

I have an Ice tank, (my name sake actually.) Who I want to slot with sets. Now from what I'm seeing,(it's been a hwile since I played him.) Ice doesn't have much resistance and a little deffense but seems a bit squishy as tanks go.

So what IO sets can I slot into him to make him a bit tougher?

Edit: I'm not looking to go crazy and purple this guy just yet, so lets keep it to orange sets please.

Okay, if you three-slot both Frozen Armor and Glacial Armor with generic L50 defense IOs and take Weave doing the same, you wind up with roughly 35% S/L/E/N defense.

That's respectable. And you can easily soft-cap your S/L from there even if you never touch energy Absorption.

Reactive Armor will bump (in order) E/N then S/L by 1.25% (3 and then 4 slots). Fire/Cold defense (which you're short on) comes at 5 slots, but is a pittance at .625%).

If you take the fighting pool, you'll have three chances to slot for resistance. Hoarfrost, Permafrost, and Tough.

A better choice, if you can afford the slots, is to bump F/C with 3 or 5 slotted Aegis. 3 slots gives you 3.125% and the fifth slot would give you an additional 1.563%. Over three resists and 15 slots that's 14% (with three-slotted defenses as mentioned earlier, you would have a base 8.8 F/C defense (but huge resists) to work with for a total of 22.8%).

Now, on the attack side.

Smashing Haymaker, 4-slotted, gives an S/L defense boost of 1.875% and you can take it up to 5 times.

However, just up from there is Kinetic Combat. 4-slotted you get 3.75%. Now, you're more than half-way to the S/L cap already. Plus, with the boost provided by Energy Absorption (and with enough recharge reduction, this stacks like crazy), you'll spend most of your time at cap. But a little more as a buffer couldn't hurt. Being capped WITHOUT using EA is safer.

Touch of Death also provides a 1.875% defense to S/L, but that's with six slots. Wasteful.

6-Slotted Mako provides 1.875% E/N defense.

In any of your abilities that can use Slows (Chilling Embrace for example), Pacing of the Turtle 6-slotted provides 1.875% E/N.

Tempered Readiness provides half that at 6 slots.

Impeded Swiftness provides 1.25% S/L in 6 slots.

Curtail Speed provides 1.25% S/L in 4 slots.

For Taunt Sets.

Perfect Zinger 6-slotted provides 3.125% S/L

Mocking Beratement provides 2.5% S/L in 4 slots and 3.125% F/C on the 5th.

Each of the lower-level taunt sets also provide S/L protection in various (decreasing) amounts.

PBAoE's like Icicles.

Cleaving Blow 3-slotted. 1.25% E/N
Eradication 3-slotted. 3.125% E/N. 6-slotted. 1.563% F/C
Multi Strike 5-slotted. .983% F/C. 6-slotted .983% S/L
Scirocco 5-slotted. 1.563% F/C.
Obliteration 6-slotted 1.875% S/L.

In To-Hits, you get a RIDICULOUS amount of broad defensive improvement out of Gaussian 6-slotted. 1.25% S/L/E/N/F/C. It's twice that if you're doing positional defenses!

2-Slotted Rectified Reticle is good for 1.875% S/L

If you take Kick instead of Boxing, Force Feedback in the KB sets gives 1.563% F/C defense for 6 slots.

In defense sets:

Serendipity 5-slotted gives .625% F/C
6-slotted Red Fortune gives 1.25% E/N

In EndMod sets:

Performance Shifter 6-slotted gives you 1.563% F/C

In Heal sets:

Numina 6-slotted gives 1.875% E/N
Miracle 5-slotted gives .983% F/C and 6-slotted 1.875% Psi defense

Holds (Freezing Touch):

Neuronic Shutdown 6-slotted. 1.25% S/L
Basilisks's Gaze 2-slotted 2.5% E/N
Essence of Curare 6-slotted .983% E/N
Lockdown 5-slotted 1.25% F/C. 6-slotted 1.875% E/N

I could go on, but you can grab a copy of Mids Hero Designer and look at the sets yourself.

Now you won't pay purple prices for a lot of this stuff, but it's also NOT cheap either (a half-billion (to a billion depending on how impatient you are) inf build vs a 5 billion inf build).

Keep in mind that you also want to build for some damage and recharge is your friend. The faster EA comes up in higher levels, the better. You can drive your S/L defense to crazy levels with it slotted right.

Currently with my Ice/Ice tank, I can button-mash like nuts and EA is up enough that if I have 2 or more enemies in range I'm pretty much guaranteed a near-to-total recharge on my End bar while watching my defense fly into "isn't that overkill?" range.

On my Ice/Fire tank, I got to within 3%ish of 45% def with slotted armors, Weave, single-slotted Combat Jumping, and a Steadfast Protection 3% def IO. My current build has 4 slots of Reactive Armor in Tough, and 4 slots of Mocking Beratement in Taunt for the remaining S/L, and 4 slots in a 6-slotted Combustion of Eradication for the E/N. All the rest of my build is pretty much dedicated to recharge/hp/regen.

I didn't find it worth trying to build up F/C def, but the build sits at 16% to both, and 21% psi. Consider Darkest Night from villain Soul Mastery if you want to plug those holes, mine just 2-slotted is 13.5% -tohit, and EA gives us the end to run it even while attacking full-bore.

Glad you guys appreciated it! I started typing around 1 AM, and digging through with Mids to get the set bonuses. Once I hit *SEND* I looked over and "Woo! 3:30! 5 hours till work!"

Granted I didn't spend the ENTIRE time looking through, was making myself a mid-night snack.

Very kind of you to put all the work into that. I'm actually doing my second build on my Ice tanker now, and I'm going to be using your post as a guide.

Thank you again, I have mids but I was hoping to avoid digging through it, pulling out a pen and paper and writing my own lists, I was hoping some one just sort of had it memorized.

But still, amazing list, I'll be making use of it right now.

Alright, it's done.

You're guide was very helpful and I'm reasonably happy with the results.

Weave, Frozen Armor, Combat Jumping and Glacial Armor, all 5 slotted, 3 level 50 defense IOs, 2 End Redux, per power.

3- 5 slotted Aegis sets.

3- 6 Slotted Mako's Bite.

2- 4 Slotted Curtail Speed.

1- 6 Slotted Positrons Blast (Put it in Ice Storm Just for fun.)

1- 5 Slotted Scirroco's Dervish.

With the Toggles Running my stats are:

S\L 23.63% Resistance.

Fire 33.76% Resistance.

Cold 90% Resistance (Capped)

3% N\T\P resistance.

No Energy resistance but I think I can live with that.

Ranged Defense 19.17%

Melee Defense 9.17%

AoE Defense 25.11%

S\L Defense 38.36%

F\C Defense 24.55%

E\N Defense 41.49%

Psionic 7.92% Defense.

No Toxic Defense.

So I'm pretty good against S\L\F\C across the board. Cold especially being an Ice tank.

I'm a bit weak in resistances for E\N\T\P, but my E\N Defense is pretty good.

T\P will be harsh on me but I can live with that, 2700 HP when I activate hoarfrost and it regens pretty fast.

As a bonus got a little 9% damage and 6% recharge bonuses and Recovery is 2.3%.

I think Endurance is going to be the sticky point on this guy, so tomorrow morning I'll be working towards his new Alpha Boost: Cardiac Total Core Revamp, which will help endurance and add to the defenses.

Thank you so much again Hyper, you're guide was great. The stats aren't incredible now, but much better than they were, can't wait to test drive this guy in the morning!

How did you slot out Energy Absorption? This can make a humongous difference.

Also, have you snagged yourself a Steadfast Protection Unique?

The stats don't need to be incredible. Just sufficiently better than before and you'll see a noticeable difference in how tough he is. After respecing my main for defense cap, I had people actively commenting about how incredibly, crazily tough he'd gotten.

For E/NE defense, Eradication in your AoEs is a much better choice than Mako's Bite, BTW. Try 3 Erad plus another couple of IOs from Scirocco's or Multi Strike.

Ice *should* be able to soft-cap S/L/E/NE easily, so I'm surprised your S/L defense is so low. Did you get a Steadfast +def or try Smashing Haymaker in your ST attacks?

I'd recommend posting your build; I'm certain we could get you to the soft-cap for S/L/E/NE and improve your overall stats. (BTW, other than Icicles, your toggles do *not* need 2 end reduction, so use those slots elsewhere)

Mako's isn't in my AoEs its in my Melee attacks. Smashing haymaker would give me 1.88 to S\L, but Makos gives me 3.75 to my E\N, which I'm happy with.

I did not get a Steadfast +def, but I might put that in one of my powers, and have only a 4 slotted aegis, since the +3 Global Defense would be nice.

My PbAoE is not Eradication, but it is Scirrocco's dervish which gives me the same bonuses to defense.

I may or may not *need* 2 end redux in my toggles, but I'm running like 6 toggles on this guy at the moment, that's a lot of End drain, and this character has always been heavy on end drain, so I want those there.

To Hypers question, I slotted EA with 2 basic Lvl 50 End Mod Ios and 2 Basic Recharge IOs. so it'll pop up quickly and give me max endurance, I didn't put any Def bonus in there, but I suppose I could if it makes a huge dif. Though the buff from EA lasts for 45 seconds and I have it recharging in 32, so it'll be perma.

All in all I'm pretty happy with the stats on this build, I don't know how much more I'm going to tweak it at the moment, but I'll still happily review suggestions!

Not true. Mako's gives 3.75% defense to Ranged damage, but just half that much to E/NE, 1.88%. Besides, S/L damage is by far the most common in the game, so it should be a priority to soft-cap S/L defense. However, as I mentioned earlier, an Ice tank should easily be able to soft-cap both S/L and E/NE defense.

"Only" 4 slotted Aegis is plenty of resistance enhancement as long as you stay away from the End/Rchg IO. As for the Steadfast, definitely get it, it's worth the influence.

Quote:

Again, no. Scirocco's Dervish gives 3.13% defense to AoE, and half that, 1.56%, to F/C damage. Eradication, on the other hand, gives 3.13% defense to E/NE with just three slots. You should be sure to read the set bonuses carefully and use the sets that have superior *typed* defense.

Other than damage powers like Icicles, as a rule toggles are *not* the cause of endurance problems, especially in a set like Ice that has a good end recovery power. It's more likely your attacks are underslotted for end reduction and that is causing the problem.

I'd still recommend that you post your build; if you're having signficant endurance problems after getting EA, something is amiss with your slotting.

Not QUITE perma-hasten, but pre-SLEN-capped and respectable Fire Defense. With double (or triple)-stacked EA and scads of extra accuracy.

And yes, you're running an ungodly number of toggles. This is what EA is FOR.

If you want perma-hasten, go with a Spiritual Booster when the time comes.

If you want more End-friendliness, go with a Cardiac. But seriously. Energy Absorbption. If it's up, USE IT. In fact, on my Ice/Ice (which is noplace near complete), it's a major point of angst to put EA or Hasten on auto-click.

The build even has some head-room built in for defense as well, so if you want to beef your defenses up, go with the higher level Nerve Boosts for the additional defense bump.

You're at +32% accuracy WITHOUT taking into account Build Up's to-hit bonus. So all of your slotted attacks give you at least 54% Accuracy bumps. If you want more, replace one of the Crushing Impact sets with Hecatomb. You'll also see a nice recharge bump too, though it'll be less endurance-friendly.

You'll also noted that I've turned EA into a possible damage dealer as well. .

One thing, PLEASE note that this build was just a throw-together of the powers. Not in any particular usable order. As such, it could probably be HEAVILY optimized for exemping duties.

Note, this build is NOT tweaked.

Alright, so just test drove my tanker on an ITF and I have to say, I'm very happy with the results.

Quick note, before when I checked my stats I didn't have 3 slotted Combat Jumping on, so I actually have an additional nearly 4% bonus to everything I listed above.

Highlights of the ITF:

- I died only once. It was a bit of a fluke, fighting Rommy in the third mission, Requiem was shooting at me as well, I was holding aggro and my HP just dropped. Not entirely sure what happened.

- I was able to hold aggro extremely well, even when holding large groups on me, my health never dipped below 50%, never used hoar frost.

-A ambush in the second mission spawned right where I was standing. With no team mates around I used Ice patch, Ice storm, and with CE giving me some slow, I tanked the entire ambush for a solid minute before others came back to help me finish them off.

- Cysts exploding did not even scratch me when I stood right on top of them

- Stood Right next to Rommy in the final fight, did not get stunned when he rezzed.

All in all this Tanker is very sturdy. I'm very happy with it and since I'm revamping several alts right now I'm likely going to leave him this way for now, after I get the steadfast +def that is.

And yes, I was reading those states on Makos and Scirroccos a bit backwards, but honestly with things the way they are right now, I'm probably not going to change much. I like the way this place and in an ITF with tons of Lethal damage, I wasn't having any problems so I don't know if I really *need* to revamp anything. I might in the future, and I'll be consulting this thread when I do but for now I am happy. Thank you all so much! This tanker rocks now.

Hyper, IMO it makes no sense to slot Hoarfrost for resistance. Honestly, increasing the amount of F/C def is not worth gimping what is one of Ice's key powers. Heal and Recharge are the way to go, though it is a good spot for the Steadfast +Def.

Well, considering the build had 35% def outside of EA, I'm inclined to agree with you. However, it's also giving toxic resistance as well, and a nasty experience recently kinda convinced me that having more than just cursory toxic resist is a Good Thing.

My immediate response would be to scale back to a pair of Res/Rech and Res/End, then two Heal/Rech and the Def unique.

All defense, almost no resist. You probably experienced a cascading defense failure and, without resist to back it up, morphed into InstaSquishy Man.

Oh hell yeah! Had an ice tank on an ITF a while back and they just were aggro monsters of the highest order. I'd occasionally be able to strip aggro off, but they'd laugh and take it right back almost instantly.

With EA, you're actually TOUGHER tanking larger mobs. Like unslotted invuln, it starts getting dicier when you're down to the last 1 or 2 enemies.

And Ice Patch. Comedy Gold!

High def is nice. Just be careful. On occasion these explosions WILL get lucky and bypass your defenses. Be ready with greens and Hoarfrost when this happens.

That's Wet Ice doing it's job.

Can't remember a single time outside of early level Vahzilok that I've had serious issues with toxic damage. Even then, I'd think that well-slotted Hoarfrost would be as good or better damage mitigation than 30% toxic resistance. And at least that form of mitigation will be available for other damage types too.

EDIT: I didn't remember how much Toxic resist Ice had to begin with, so I pulled those slots in Mid's to get the answer, 20%. So slotting Hoarfrost for resist instead of heal/recharge means underslotting one of the best powers in the set for a lousy 10% additional toxic resist. Totally not worth it, IMO.

==========

This build may not be the "fastest" ... nor the DPS-ingest ... but it sure inhales aggro like a wind tunnel. As proof, I offer the testimonial of a Tanker Tuesday Team Lead here from August.

Yes, there is no Hasten in this build ... because it isn't needed.
There's also no Tough/Weave either ... because I went with Leadership instead ... which makes the entire team better (not just you and only you).

And don't be fooled by the "limited" click attack options of Frozen Fists, Frost, Frozen Touch, Frozen Aura and Taunt (yes ... Taunt). Because animation times can't be accelerated by enhancement, these powers merely need to recharge "fast enough" to create a (repeatable) attack chain. This build offers sufficient global recharge to do that without a pause using just these five powers.

This is totally a "Flypaper" build, where the idea is to draw hostiles in ... and grind them down into loess. There are multiple means of escaping from disadvantaged situations without resorting to inspirations, with Hibernate being the big one. With Chilling Embrace and Taunt enhanced for taunt, there should be no trouble holding onto aggro while Hibernating. And the combination Chilling Embrace (via damage proc), Icicles, Frost and Frozen Aura offer rather extreme PBAoE damage potential for defeating Foes wholesale, rather than retail. Frost can also be used as a PBAoE-ish attack simply by jumping up and pointing the damage cone down a melee adjacent hostile on the ground (which raises the number of targets caught in the Cone very nicely). For this stunt, it really helps to enhance Range on Frost (as you see here).

Stacked Slow effects, along with stacked Holds offers decidedly Scranktroller level control abilities, which in turn offers the ability to proactively manage the most annoying NPC Foes, effectively neutralizing them.

It's the end. But the moment has been prepared for ...
