Combining 3 large inspirations to 'get a purple'?

I saw this phrase in one of the guides to making influence.

Said he would combine 3 large inspirations to (maybe) get a purple, and then vend that.

Maybe I misunderstood it, but when I look at combining 3 large inspirations it just shows me the list of the usual large inspirations to select from.

Is there some sort of chance that combining 3 large will produce something else? Or did he just mean purple/luck/defense are the most valuable to resell (more valuable than 3 others?)

This. It gets you a large purple inspiration. The maximum size inspirations have some market value (it fluctuates). I'm not sure why...I used to think it might be for PVP. But people buy 'em. Some are more valuable than others. Check the market a few times to get a feel for which.

I've commonly seen them used by tanks who are tanking Recluse on an STF with no support. If you use large inspirations you don't have to carry as many to stack them up. Since 1 large one = 4 small ones, it makes sens to use the bigger one to save yourself tray space.

It used to be the case that most of the large inspirations sold for a reliable 60k, and spiked up to 100k, while large lucks sold reliably for 250k and spiked to 400k. Clearly, combining into purples was the way to go.

Lately, however, I'm seeing all of them go reliably for 120k and all of them spiking up to 400k, so not worth combining from what I've seen.

I usually sell the first 2 inspirations that drop during the tutorial zone for some quick start up inf on a new toon. after that I usually dont bother with selling (or buying) them on the market (except as a "pay it forward" kind of inf dump).

The real trick of this (getting back to the OP's original question) is that oftentimes you can buy large orange and yellow inspirations fairly cheaply (like say for only 5k each). If you buy three of them for like 15k then you can combine them into a single large purple or wakie (which tend to go for like 200k or more) and actually make some decent INF that way.

Personally I use this "trick" all the time to restock my inspiration trays with large inspirations fairly cheaply.

Yup that's very true. With patience the low end of the pricing you can buy any of them for under 20k and often as low as 5k.
