So this morning, my Mom decided to unplug the speakers on our home computer so she could hook up the printer. Well right after she did that, we lost internet due to the fact that our home computer is directly hooked up to our DSL/Wi-Fi/Modem.

Anyway, we were trying for a while and nothing happened. We have 3 Lights that are on in the Modem and the Wi-Fi box (I don't know the exact name of it), has a few lights on as well.

It says that the cable is plugged in, but we are not connected. Any ideas guys? I'd really like to come home to the internet, thank you in advance.

There are quite a number of things that could be wrong, but rather than give you a long list, you are probably better off calling your internet provider. They could run a test from their end to see what is and isn't hooked up right, and give you steps to solve it.

But that's the thing, we've hooked up the cables to exactly what they were before my Mom touched them.

We're thinking it might be the weather, but if that's the case, shouldn't the computers at my college have lost internet access as well?

So, if I'm not wrong, you are usually conected by Wifi. Did you try conecting by cable and reseting your modem configuration?

I think she did. I was still sleeping when it first happened.

Not sure how it works here, usually here (Spain), the internet provider is the one who "gives" you the router.
Said router had as default the provider settings, and comes with the Wifi Off.
With that in mind, if you have some kind of document with the default settings to connect a router reset could be the best solution.
Be sure that you have all the documentation first, and some kind of Router instructions to be sure what to do.

I agree with the dude that said call your internet company. This is a perfect case where they're actually useful.

sounds like the router came up before modem got done connecting to the isp.

try unpluging the power from the modem and router. then plug in the modem, wait a few minutes to be safe and let it connect. then plug in the router, give it a minute to get started. then reboot your pc.

I'll have to do it when I get home then, but if you guys can think of any other reasons as to why this is happening, I'll really appriciate it.

I hope this is what happened.

Thank you for the info, Slice.

This is a good guess.
This is very likely to happen in the situation you describe.

There're other things that could be happening, but this should be tried 1st as it's simple and relatively safe.

Right, that could be it then.

I won't know until I get home though. :/

I've had this issue several times myself with my cable modem setup and rebooting the modem and router usually takes care of the problem.

When you plug the modem back in wait until the connected light comes on; this varies from modem to modem but there should be a power light, a data light and a connection light. Sometimes it may take a few minutes to sync up.

When all the lights on the modem are on then turn on the router. Once it's lights all come on, which should only take a few seconds, see if you have internet. If not, reboot your computer and see if that solves your issue.

If you still have problems then it's time to call your ISP tech support.

Always works for me. Make sure the modem is up and going (all lights ready) before you turn on the router.

FWIW, resetting the modem & router (if they're separate, mine is one unit now) and rebooting the PC has always done the trick for me unless it's actually an ISP problem.

Usually when this happens my PC has lost track of its IP address, and resetting the modem/router forces them to reassign one.

This is all good, but I would have the computer off while doing all this. Then turn it on once the modem and router are ready.

What happens if the computer is on while I do this?

Nothing really, but there are rare cases when the computer gets "stuck" with no connection because there was no connection when it was powered on, so the easiest way to prevent that is to turn everything else on and make sure they are running fine before turning the computer on so it'll hopefully detect the connection instantly.

Hence why I mentioned if that didn't solve the issue, and for me it does about half the time, to reboot the computer afterward. Not a big deal, and it's not going to hurt anything to do it either way.

After hours of screwing with everything, I got my Internet back at around 8 PM Eastern. But when my Mom went to use her computer at 6 AM, she said that the internet wasn't working. I'm starting to think that our router might by dying. I don't know.

Do you guys think that if I just directly hooked up my Laptop to the Internet Cable from the Modem that I would have Internet until I got the Router fixed or just got a new Router?

That will work sure; you'll just have one connection. Did the power off/on of the modem followed by the router fix the issue before?

Right now we don't know if the problem's the modem, the router or your ISP; without knowing that it's shooting blind to decide what's going bad.

That depends somewhat on how you and/or your ISP are set up, but "probably". For instance, if the modem is providing NAT and DHCP, with the router in effect merely giving you extra ports; and your laptop is set to get its address via DHCP, it should work. On the other hand, if the modem is basically just passing data and you've been assigned a specific IP address or had a specific MAC address registered with your ISP which belongs to the router, you'll need to manually reconfigure your laptop to match the settings your ISP expects.

Part of the confusion is that there are a lot of different jobs that get done by different devices, and the common names don't always match the technical roles.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Residential_gateway
is a good start if you want some more details. In this case, one of the questions is whether your "modem" is also serving as the primary router, with your "router" mostly just serving as a network switch.

In any case... home-grade "routers" do fail more often than people expect. Most of them are poorly cooled, and not really designed for the heavier use of gamers, video streamers, torrenters, hackers, etc. My experience is that depending on brand and environment a service life of 1 to 3 years is typical. They can have all sorts of weird, difficult-to-diagnose problems as they start to fail as well, although one of the most common is failure to work well with longer network cable segments.

That's often the first thing your ISP will ask you to do, so you can rule out a crappy router. If it works, even remotely, it's a quick and easy way for them to say, "Welp, guess you better get your DLXPoopStinker Router replaced before you bother us again, huh slappy?"

Give it a go and see what happens.
