Wow this is really sad news. By complete random chance I was channel surfing last night and decided to watch the last 30 minutes or so of Empire Strikes Back. It had been a while since I'd watched it but I've probably seen it easily 50 times or more over the years. It will always be one of the top all-time movies to me. Who knew I was going to be watching it the day (more or less) Kershner passed away.

RIP Irvin...

Yeah, oddly enough I was watching it the other day too. Sad day today.

Empire Strikes Back was easily the best directed of all the Star Wars movies. I wish he had directed all of them . . .

LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

I regard Empire was the best of the six in terms of story and direction. Ep 4 is next since it was the first, then Ep 3 despite its flaws since it had the epic fight with Anakin and Obi as well as giving us the Wookie army that Lucas couldn't give back in the day with ROTJ. ROTJ comes next, then Ep 1 and 2 are tied at the bottom.

But yeah....I can imagine how'd they be if he had directed them all...

For a while, Empire elevated Kershner from competent journeyman director (1978's The Eyes of Laura Mars being his best work up until then) to a go-to guy for franchise sequels (1983's James Bond quasi-official sequel with Sean Connery Never Say Never Again and 1990's Frank Miller-scripted RoboCop 2). Judging from his recent easygoing interview in Vanity Fair on the 30th anniversary of Empire, he seems quite content with his output, without any of the insecure auteurism that has marred G. Lucas's career.

I am saddened.

I was always hoping that Lucas would pull his head out of you know where and have Kershner direct another Star Wars project. I agree that Empire is, by far, the best of the Star Wars movies.

Not sure I agree about where Lucas' head is , but yeah if Kershner had directed any of the prequels that would have automatically improved them.
