On the bright side, the company that embezzled money from their customers projects to make this heaping pile of guano will probably spend most of the money they make on the film fighting lawsuits,and then even more money paying off the settlements.

Allegedly, I would like to add, by Sony who has an alien invasion film of their own on the way. No axe to grind there.

Embezzling money from customer's projects? You have a funny way of describing company revenue.

Yeah it's called the law.

Embezzlement is the act of dishonestly appropriating or secreting assets by one or more individuals to whom such assets have been entrusted.

If you come to me and give me money to complete a job and I use it on my own purposes instead of yours then I've embezzeled money from you. It doesn't matter if later I use another customers money to complete your job, or if I intend to replace the funds you gave me from the profit I make on my own project.

The only thing you are right about is that currently the charges are allegations. But if this does go to court it doesn't matter if they are found innocent or not. The cost of defending themselves will easily eat up the money they made on making this pile of crap.

That was pretty much why my friends and I didn't believe the trailer at first. The trailer we saw pretty much expressed nothing but the following: There are these aliens, you see, and they are evil and kidnapping people. Faced with this revolutionary and unique new concept, my friends' minds were promptly blown.

Your definition is correct, but I do not see how it applies here. Sony gave them money to do SFX for their movie. As long as Hydraulx delivered said SFX, I'd have a big problem with calling the money paid by Sony "embezzled". Once it was given to Hydraulx, and the SFX delivered, it was Hydraulx's money. Not Sony's.

Embezzlement would be one of Sony's accountants using company funds to pad his own bank account.

That's why it would take a financial investigator/auditor to review the books to determine if what was done was illegal. And again even if it was determined that the company did nothing wrong, the legal fees they'd incur defending themselves in court could easily eat up any profit they made on this crappy film. It's definitely not a blockbuster.

That's not the only type of embezzlement. Companies get in trouble all the time misappropriating funds from one account for other projects. It doesn't matter if they intend to return the money before it gets missed, it's still illegal.

The temptation for companies to play it fast and loose partially stems from the idea that they can turn a quick profit on their own business projects and return the misappropriated funds to the original account before they are needed. Sadly they only seem to get caught when their projects backfire and they lose the misappropriated money instead of making it.
