Video Card question-

Father Xmas

Posted

I need a new video card- one that is hopefully under a hundred bucks that could run CoH, CoV, and GR smoothy on the upper graphics settings- even ultra mode if possible- any suggestions- I have a dell, that runs 3.19 ghz is windows XP- with I think 4 gb.

Any help or links are appreciated.

Thanx.

Why don't you post a CoHHelper report, or even the Dell's model number. 3.2GHz and XP doesn't tell us a whole hell of a lot. It'll be easier than playing 20 questions.

Here's a question that can't be answered by a CoHHelper report, is buying the card online an option or are we talking Fry's or BestBuy only?

There's no Video Card under $100 that will run CoH in Ultra Mode well enough to be playable. Yes, you can find RadeonHD 4850's for around $100, but those will mostly be the 512mb versions of the card, and they are largely being phased off the market for a very good reason.

You don't even need to shop carefully to get the much more powerful RadeonHD 5770 for around $120, granted after mail-in-rebate.

Also, according to the Data posted, your computer is actually fairly weak.

The computer states it only has 1gb of Ram, not 4gb of ram, so that is going to weaken your ability to run intensive texture and data operations.

Second, it's a Pentium 4 at 3.2ghz. Given that this is a Dell computer, that is probably going to be either a P4 540 (32bit) or a P4 640 (Intel's ugly software version of x86-64). Either way, in terms of actual computing power, it would get destroyed by modern processors from AMD or Intel.

One of the performance problems is that while it says it has 2 processors, your computer doesn't. It's a single core with Hyper-threading. I did an over-view of Hyper-Threading, or SMT, as used in the P4 several years ago: http://www.mepisguides.com/fti/rig-r...g-rec-cpu.html

The semi good news is that the processor won't be a bottleneck outside of Ultra-Mode. It just will be a bottleneck inside of Ultra-Mode.

* * *

Now, if It was my money on the line, I honestly wouldn't be spending. Reason why is that your computer is listed as having a Geforce 6800 graphics card. Which version isn't listed, but that doesn't really matter to me.

Thing is, I have one of Clevo's D900T desknotes. It has a Pentium 4 530 (32bit) and the lowest mobile version of the 6800, which is more like a 6600. That laptop can smoothly drive CoH in classic rendering modes.

The problems are these:
  • Any graphics card under $100 isn't going to buy you enough performance to get out of the classic rendering modes.
  • Any graphics code over $100 is that can do Ultra Mode is going to be bottle-necked by your processor and amount of memory.
Now, if you are buying simply to replace the 6800 because it's dying, or some reason like that, go buy a RadeonHD 5670. It won't do Ultra-Mode, but it will keep the same frame-per-second performance profile of the most powerful 6800, the Ultra.

Shop carefully, and you'll spend around $80 total getting a 5670 with 1gb of Vram.

Also - check how your ram is in your case - and maybe get some more RAM - Upgrading from 1 to 2 GB on my winXP system did a lot for speed, it seems.

.
For what reason other than being old?

My 4850 has been holding up fine but its not enough to run ultra mode. Trying to move the water effects slider makes the comp crash and depht of field starts lagging gfx hardcore.
All the ultra mode related cause a decrease in fps which is imo not worth it just to make gfx shiny.

I´m eventually upgrading to another card but would probably need to upgrade the psu(450w atm) as well and cba to spend that money atm.

Je Saist is right. You really aren't going to see significant improvement for under $100 and with that low a budget you would be better off getting more ram.

If you pick up the 5670 that was recommended then you will be able to use a few of the ultra mode features but not any of the settings that really make an impressive difference. No advanced shadows or occlusion or reflections without seeing frame rates drop really low.

So to sum up. Spend the money on increasing your ram and then save up for a new system.

Honestly, given your system specs, I wouldn't bother. Just about anything you buy that's higher performance is going to have you spending extraneous money to upgrade the power supply as well.

Plus, due to the age of the base platform (P4), the performance bump will be even less pronounced.

Bummer- thanx for all the help- I was worried that it's time to wait and hope the comp can hobble until I can just outright get a new comp...

Thanx all for the insight.

Thanks Work, as you can see that helped a lot.

If you have a plain old nVidia 6800 (or 6800XT or 6800LE, not sure if DxDiag would call that out) even an HD 5570 (DDR3) or GT 430 would be a big step up. I think players forget that there's a big leap in requirements between UM on low and UM off but everything else high. I have a friend with a 7950GT, can't do UM at all but it looks pretty damn good otherwise.

That said the low amount of memory and a single core (with HT) P4 are a limiting factor on how much improvement he would see. Right now 2 sticks of 1GB DDR2-533 memory is roughly $35-40 at NewEgg. The memory will help smooth out frame rate jitter caused by the system needing to swap stuff to disk while playing. Noticeable while traveling across zones but not in indoor missions.
