Secondary powersets

I've always liked the dominator concept. I like the idea of a fighter type who uses controls instead of defenses as his mitigation. But I've never made a dominator. I've never put together a build that I wanted to play.

The thing that always stops me from pursuing a dominator toon is the secondary powersets. I don't really like any of them. They're all too blasterish... elementalish... magical powers and whatnot. What I prefer to play is something more physical or mechanical. I'd love to play something like martial arts mixed with guns... or swords mixed witih throwing weapons. The closest concept I've come to actually making is using energy attacks for a cyborg-like fighter who smashes things with his robotic arms and fires some energy weapons built into his armor. But the concept falls short when he then uses his mind to control his opponents. A Jedi with mechanical arms doesn't quite work. A jedi with a sword, or a ninja warrior with mind control... that works. A guy with telekinetic powers who's also trained to use guns and martial arts to fight ... that works for me. But the existing sets don't give me what I'm looking for.

Every other AT with the exception Kheldians has a weapon set or a devices set. Scrappers and Stalkers are almost entirely based on weapons and or natrual punch-kick sets. Perhaps they need more elemental sets even. But dominators, IMHO are lacking in a physical "natural" type fighting set.

No question really. Just a thought I had.

I gotta make pain. I gotta make things right. I gotta stop what's comin'. 'Least I gotta try.

out of my 4 dominators, 1 is magic (a demon - ice/fiery), 1 is tech (a robot - grav/icy), and two are from a set of 4 scientists caught in an experiment gone wrong so science origin (elec/earth (crystal) and grav/elec).

your 'jedi' could be a robot/cyborg using mind control and energy assault (i had a robot with an exposed brain for an archery/mental blaster). you could tone down the melee attacks glow (not sure how low it will go). its more of a tech solution, but they don't have to be all 'magicy' although i do understand what you mean.

I'll say what I always say in this sort of situation: If you can't think up a reason for your themed character, you aren't trying hard enough.

I'd love to see a more punchy secondary.

That said, /Earth and /Elec may fill your needs. Charged Brawl, Havoc Punch and Thunderstrike are very punchy and could double as something Jedi-ish. /Earth is as smashy as it gets

I agree with the OP, though. The lack of weapon sets for Dominators is the reason why I'm bringing a plant/TA controller redside. I wanted to see a guy that used a control set but also attacked with a weapon, which is something that is still not viable.

Please devs, give us that whip set for Dominators already!

Ability to come up with a reason isn't the same as coming up with a compelling, interesting story you enjoy playing.

He has implants or his powerarmor can amplify his latent psi abilities.

He is a fully engineered bio-borg or wears a symbiotic lifeform with pseudo-organic parts allowing him to channel energy/fire/electric damage.

He has powerful mental abilities which allow him to use mind control against his opponents as well as displays of electrokinesis/pyrokinesis/cryokinesis/create pure energy/create crystalline (earth assault power customized) constructs that he uses to crush his enemies.

If fortunatas can be turned into cyborg tarantulas, I don't see why your Jedi can't have mechanical arms.

Or a single bionic hand...

Or a giant black life sustaining suit...

This was exactly my thought on reading the OP

Could also have a psychic who has some sort of physical malady or frailty and uses a powered exoskeleton to either make them able to move more freely (I have a partially paralyzed hero who works in a robot suit myself) or as life support (aka Iron Man) or even just to be able to stand up to more powerful foes in a direct fight (think the lifter unit Ripley used against the queen in Aliens).
