So how exactly do I max my S/L defense?
Kinetic Combats, and to a lesser extent Reactive Armors, Rectified Reticle, and Obliterations are the way to get soft capped S/L defense. Steadfast Protection: Def, and Weave are good things to have too.
edit: Although not necessarily purples (these are all uncommons and rares) they can still be rather pricey. Especially the Kinetic Combats which are the key to hitting the soft cap on a blaster.
So I have a cheap build, and more of a final goal build to show. I won't claim either is perfect, but it's pretty good.

Saying you didn't have much money, I tried to keep the sets cheap. The Luck of the Gambler +7.5% recharges are in there because they can be obtained with 2 hero/villain merits, bypassing Wentworths.
Forgot to mention that both builds are designed for I19. The 3 slots in rest are for stamina: perf. Shifter end mod, chance for +end, and end mod/rech (or end mod/acc).
Why take Grant Invisibility and slot a LotG recharge in it, when you could take Stealth and have a power at 49 (that you can slot the same IO in) that is actually USEFUL?
Sure, you can give other people invisibility, but what if you want to ghost something at some point? Slap a Stealth IO in Sprint and you're good to go. And if you can afford the end cost, you can run Stealth and get a tiny bit more defense (plus slightly less chance of agroing nearby mobs)
Just food for thought.
Edit: D'OH! I skimmed over the build too fast and missed Stealth taken earlier in it. Never mind. Invisibility might be a decent option there though.

Hmmm, unless I read the OP's post wrong, he is talking about having enough to buy some yellow IO's. Kinetic combats are going to cost you what, .5 billion for four sets?
Personnaly, I dont think its worth it. I looked at it for my old Nrg/Nrg blaster and the cost and power choices just made it look blah to me.
I think I would just build for recharge and damage, and blast away. You never know what different AT's can do. For instance, my blaster easily and safely can solo the cim wall, while my Regen scrapper cannot.
I guess my point is, that you may end up spending alot, and find it improves your toon, little, or maybe makes him worse.
I would build him to kill or be killed quickly. Very little can stand against Fires AOE's. Add in your Rise of the Phoenix, and you have a fairly quick moving killing machine, that faceplants once in a while, only to rise and destroy those who have defeated him.

I gave up on the s/l defense idea with my DP/fire/fire and went hover blaster. Found it easier and cheaper to softcap ranged and N/E:

I gave up on the s/l defense idea with my fire/fire/fire and went hover blaster. Found it easier and cheaper to softcap ranged and N/E:

The caveat is that you need to take either Cold or Mace Mastery as your APP. Ice Armor or Scorpion Shield, by itself, will get you about 17% S/L DEF. From there it's easy to pick up Tough and Weave and fill out the rest with IO sets. You don't even necessarily need Kinetic Combat sets; Smashing Haymaker will do for a ghetto build if you play your cards right otherwise.
Hover + ranged DEF is certainly a viable option too. Ranged DEF, provided you don't often use melee attacks, is at least as safe as S/L DEF, and it's generally more exemplar-friendly too -- given that you're not relying on an APP toggle. The downside is that Ranged DEF cuts into your opportunities for other bonuses.
These days, as a general rule, I personally give the edge to S/L DEF. Mace Mastery is worth taking for the AoE immobilize alone, and if you're gonna take Mace Mastery anyway, you might as well play to the pool's strengths.
I don't have the energy to look over your build very carefully right now, but your build seems to have no ranged AoE attacks at all -- which is a good thing in the sense that targeted AoE IO sets don't have any useful defensive bonuses; that's why Fire Blasters are such a pain to soft-cap without lots of help from pools. Only you can determine what'll work for your playstyle, but it seems to me that you're gonna want to go into melee fairly often, which means that your ranged DEF will be effectively wasted.

Hmmm, unless I read the OP's post wrong, he is talking about having enough to buy some yellow IO's. Kinetic combats are going to cost you what, .5 billion for four sets?
Personnaly, I dont think its worth it. I looked at it for my old Nrg/Nrg blaster and the cost and power choices just made it look blah to me. |

I just made this build for my fire/fire/ice blaster
a little over softcap s/l and 62.5% recharge without using any purples.
I just got mine to 50 yesterday and have spent a total of 500m on io sets, only things i'm missing now are a numinas recov/heal and 2 5pc lotg sets with 7.5% recharge.
Once i19 goes live you can keep the exact same slotting (I will) and add in stealth and other abilities to put in some more lotg 7.5% recharge to get more recharge and then I plan on getting a couple purple sets to get more recharge.
This is an almost exclusive AE kill em all build. I go into groups of mobs even now and they melt very quick.

I don't have loads of cash laying around so I get things like KCs with alternate methods. So if you're looking for those:
The ACC/DMG and DMG/END drop from bronze rolls. The 35-39 has the best odds of getting KC pieces. I have a character who can run a few (legitimate) farm missions in AE and get 9000 tickets. Using that gives you 128 rolls. You can usually get a couple KC pieces with that. And if you're lucky you can sell some of the other stuff you get for cash and maybe buy some.
The DMG/RECH piece costs one HVM, which only takes two days to earn. The triple piece however does cost two HVMs, but that's not so bad considering the ease of obtaining the other pieces.
Personally I don't really bother soft capping stuff since it tends to require build sacrifice. My main Blaster and my favorite Dom have somewhere around 25-30% DEF to range or S/L. More is better, but they do fine without needing to push any higher.
Dispari has more than enough credability, and certainly doesn't need to borrow any from you.

Don't forget the other way of making Kinetic Combat cheaper - ignore the triple piece and slot the Chance for Knockdown instead, and then fill up with an extra Acc/Dam from a cheap set.
It costs an extra slot, but the knockdown proc is quite nice mitigation when it goes off, say in Fire Sword or one of your lighter attacks.
And definitely worth it if you're using Boxing or Kick as a set mule for 4 KC's.
Oh yeah, and once don't forget the Kinetic Dampener temporary power. +16% S/L Def, very nice when you're levelling and need to face a couple of spawns at once.
Hello all. I have a level 50 fire/fire/fire blaster, he was my first character (born in June 2004 or so) and I now have enough veteran respecs to play around with his build a bit. I actually parked him at level 32 and started a controller who ended up as my first 50; this was because my blaster was so squishy compared to the other AT's I saw around me. I love CoH and I sometimes miss the old days when I just played, and didn't bother reading the forums or researching builds. Of course I spent most of the "old days" in perma-debt as well.
So now I have leveled a tanker to 43, and I see the immense value in defense and resistance stats, and although it seems counter-intuitive (to me) to build for defense on a blaster, I'm ready to experiment with my fire blaster's build. He's already 50 so leveling is not a concern, and I don't run task forces; I usually team with one other real-life friend, and I enjoy running with pick-up groups on occasion. Basically I'd like to buff my guy's survivability and I don't mind dropping a few of the powers I rarely use (like the sniper attack or even Inferno) in order to increases defense and/or resistance. I can always respec back anyway.
I find that I prefer being on the ground (I run with Combat Jumping and Acrobatics) and I like using my AoE's first, then Blaze and Fire Blast to finish things off. I used to try and hover-blast a while back, but I don't really care for it anymore. Plus I have to be on the ground for Burn and Hot Feet anyway. What Fire powers would you consider critical, and which can be jettisoned in order to pick up more S/L defense/resistance? Is Frozen Armor the only epic shield that actually provides +DEF? It seems the rest are all +resistance, not defense. Of the pool powers, I guess I need Tough and Weave, and Maneuvers...any others? Even if I cannot reach the S/L soft cap, 35%-40% would probably be a huge benefit and would make my hero alignment and radio missions a whole lot easier.
I can easily afford to slot yellow IO sets...probably an orange or two...not really any purples, however. Thank you in advance for any assistance.
