What: Old Timer's Gathering
When: Saturday, November 6, 2010 @ 6:00pm PST
Where: Gemnii Park
Why: Why not?

Since November 5 is Guy Fawkes Day in England, I thought it would be a good day to commemorate it as a theme for Old Timer's Gathering.

If you've seen V for Vendetta, you'll have a general idea of what it's about. If not, here's the Wiki article that tells the whole sordid story.

And even if you don't dress appropriately, no worries; just come on by and hang out with us.

Saying "V for Vendetta, you'll have a general idea of what it's about" for Guy Fawkes day, is like saying "If you have seen The Patriot then you have an idea what its about" for Independence day.

Guy Fawks day fills me with so much sadness. King James made decree for the celebration of the survival of the crown. The people have used the day as a rallying point of inspiration that one person can make a difference, that no king or government is untouchable to the point that we even had a tradition of burning an effigy of the pope.

Now its all commercialization, bought effigy's of Fawks himself and a bunch of kids on the internet spouting memes.

Fawks was one of my heroes growing up as a child in England during the reign of Thatcher.

The Gunpowder Treason Plot; the only real attempt to reform Parliament from within.

The Elysienne; Magical controller
Silent Sickle; Natural scrapper
And many more.
Aenigma Rebis: "Actually, Ely's more like Jean Grey. Only... smart."

Scary thing is? If only half of the gunpowder he had used had successfully gone off it would have blasted the roof halfway to France.

Now! This is it! Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain or live and fight your sorrow! Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!

Meh. He screwed up the plot and good thing too. If he hadn't, the likes of my family probably would have suffered even more.
Bob Geldof Vs Thatcher was better anyway.

I had a hard time following "V for Vendetta" even with closed captioning; and I knew what Guy Fawkes Day was all about thanks to a previous wife who was from Britain. Still..."V for Vendetta" was weird.

Sadly, a lot of holidays have become more and more commercialistic in the last several years. Christmas stuff was appearing in August at one upscale store back in the 80s, and other stores have been catching on slowly.

Fortunately, it won't be commercial for those of us who gather in Gemnii Park. ;-)

I dug it, thought it was cool but I'm one of those stereotypical Americans where if something happens outside of the US I don't know nuffin. So the movie was, to some degree, educational. That and some of the satire could easily be applied to the Bush Administration let alone, and I'm not one of them, conspiracy theorists.

I unfortunately don't get home from work until an hour and a half later. As interesting an enlightening this could be I figure by then it would be long over. And since it's a Friday night, the general population starts their weekend by being lazy into Saturday and on. So I may even have to stay longer especially with manager positions being switched and rearranged, I apologize if I can't make it in which case I wish ya'll the best of luck.

Actually OTG usually goes on until the wee hours of the morning, we usually break up at around 3am EST

Sorry for any disillusionment, but Fawkes dreamed of an absolute monarchy along the lines of Catholic Spain, something beyond the wildest ambitions of a duly elected PM like Thatcher. There's a reason he wanted to blow up Parliament as well as James I. (Oliver Cromwell is better model for a hero in that respect.)

Fun historical fact: Robin Hood was once such a byword for sedition that Fawkes and his co-conspirators were referred to, disparagingly, as "Robin Hoods" at the time.

But in the spirit of commemoration, whereby those important events of the past, usually associated with someone's death or the end of some awful bloody struggle, are celebrated with a nice holiday, I thought we could mark this November the 5th, a day that is sadly no longer remembered, by taking some time out of our daily lives to sit down and have a little chat. There are of course those who do not want us to speak. I suspect even now, orders are being shouted into telephones, and men with guns will soon be on their way. Why? Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission. How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn't be? War, terror, disease. There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic you turned to the now high chancellor, Adam Sutler. He promised you order, he promised you peace, and all he demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent. Last night I sought to end that silence. Last night I destroyed the Old Bailey, to remind this country of what it has forgotten. More than 400 years ago a great citizen wished to embed the fifth of November forever in our memory. His hope was to remind the world that fairness, justice, and freedom are more than words, they are perspectives. So if you've seen nothing, if the crimes of this government remain unknown to you then I would suggest that you allow the fifth of November to pass unmarked. But if you see what I see, if you feel as I feel, and if you would seek as I seek, then I ask you to stand beside me one year from tonight, outside the gates of Parliament, and together we shall give them a fifth of November that shall never, ever be forgot.

Remember...

So kind of like Jesse James, I suppose I'd believe it. That's how Romanticism works after all, one's actions seemingly stand out or are interpreted in a different manner that makes up for who the person really was.

Still a good movie though. Hugo Weaving being the vigilante was a pretty cool idea.

Well, I got to Gemini Park at around 11pm Eastern, and stayed around for over an hour. There was no one there at all. So much for celebrating Guy Fawkes' Day.

From what I understand, the venue was moved due to Raids.

My sincerest and deepest apologies (Or as The Grinch said, "I'm...sorry.") to those who showed up and saw no one there. It looks like that in the future, we'll have to have a substitute place in case of raids, invasions, etc. I got there about 7pm myself and hung out for a half hour and it started raining Rikti. Found out from Rose that she and a few others had moved to Pocket D. Bad enough to deal with Halloween madness, then we get Rikti right after that and in what, a couple of weeks, we're gonna get Winter stuff, too? C'mon Devs!

I swear, I'm gonna have to start an SG just for this group. Something to discuss next go-round.
