I am in a small SG with 3 other Players. We'd like to set up some sort of VoIP system so we can cgat while we play. I know nothing about how do do this. Can someone point me to a simple source of info on how to do this? Is vent the best way to go aboit it?

Ventrillo Setup

Basically, you'll have to set up a server, then you all connect to it to chat to each other.

Thanks v much, MB, but it looks a bit too complicated for me, with allthe command prompt stuff for setting up a server etc. Is there a simpler one than vent?

Worst case scenario you can probably just start a voice chat on Yahoo or skype or something.

I find it's worth it to rent a server for Vent; Powervs.com has several package deals starting at $3 a month for a 12 slot server (12 people chatting at once). So far my SG buddies haven't exceeded that limit so I haven't upgraded to the $5 24 slot one. I do suggest when you set up the Vent server you upgrade the sound codec; there's a BIG difference between the 8 KHz default and 32 KHz. It's just a setting on the server setup but I was dumb enough to not find it until recently

A free option is Skype, the only downer is that one person has to host the call and get everyone together each time... if they DC then the call goes too. On the other hand it's free and very good sound quality.

My SG has both and more often than not we end up using Vent because it's easier. Skype typically is used when we're running with non-SG people who don't have our Vent server information.

Thanks for all the advice, all.

i think we'll go with skype for the time being and see how that goes.

Skype works well with the caveat that one person will have to run the call and get everyone else on each time you play. I don't know if it will be a factor for you but Skype's client is a bit hungrier on processor power than Vent... I've had a couple of buddies who are still on single core CPU's say that Skype knocks a bunch off of COH's framerates while Vent doesn't affect them. I don't notice ANY degradation myself, but I'm running on a quadcore CPU or a Core2Duo on my laptop.

The person hosting the skype call should be the guy with the beefiest computer. Hosting is what kills the CPU. My little laptop here was about to explode when I had 4-5 people on a skype call recently.

Vent is definately more friendly to your need. I have a vent server and it adds so much more fun to the game.

Just beware about having randoms join. More people is more fun, but even one rotten apple to spoil the batch.

Well, the guy who has issues has never hosted Skype, he just joins the call and it still has a pretty heavy performance hit. Now he's using an older machine, single core. Still, he reports no noticeable hit with Vent and a 20fps hit with Skype.

I've never noticed any problems myself, but both my desktop and laptop are fairly potent machines. I was just tossing that out as a potential problem since one of my buddies was having issues. Maybe it's something else in his machine but he says Skype killed his fps and Vent had no effect.

<edit>
Vent's pretty easy to control access as well, you'll need to give all the config info to everyone and if you run into a problem child you can just kick them and change the password.

You also might want to check out Mumble. That is what me and my friends use. I don't host the server on that one, my brother does, but if he can get it working how hard can it be?

I use this service and have had a Vent server for 3 years without issues. Easy to follow set up steps and excellent tech support if needed.

I'm also using LightSpeed to host two Vent servers and am pretty happy with it.

I used to have a Teamspeak server set up on my secondary PC, it worked fine except when my internet was going wonky.
