Orange salvage is used to craft rare (and some uncommon) recipes. You can also sell it either to vendors (for 5000 inf) or to the marketplace (often for more).
If this is your first piece of rare orange salvage, I'm guessing you got it somewhere under level 20? The reason I ask is that most of the low-level rares don't sell for very much in the marketplace. There just aren't that many good recipes that need them, and the supply is pretty high.

Since you said "mission salvage", I assume you mean the Circle of Thorns Incantation?
If so, as you progress through that arc, you'll recieve four other pieces of Unique salvage, which will be used later to creat a special Temporary Power needed to finish the arc.

Ah yes, my mistake. Some missions (only one or two, I think) have "special" salvage to accomplish a task. Follow the clues on those and you'll be aces.
