PS3-like controller

Is there any way to set up a PC gaming controller (mine resembles a PS3 controller) for this game?

You're asking a lot of questions today.

I set up my wired Xbox 360 controller to work with the game when I was bored one day last summer. It wasn't particularly fluid... I don't think I was able to get the camera look to work with my right analog stick. It was also a huge pain in the butt to get all my attacks bound to all the buttons, and pretty much ended up not being much fun at all once the novelty wore off.

Anyway, if your controller works with your PC (ie, you have all the necessary drivers installed), you can set joystick commands in the Options menu. Once you've experimented enough to learn what the game calls each button, you can even set your own binds using the /bind command...

Of course, when you realize you've got 10 powers in your primary tray plus however many others you commonly use in your alt trays, plus jump, plus a button to activate/deactivate your travel power... Well, you're going to quickly realize that you don't have enough buttons to do anything.

Alright...so my Xbox 360 controller...that's already set up for other games...should be able to be used?

Edit: I apologize for all the questions today. Just re-subbed my account...trying to add new flavor to the game.

Well, you can set two of your controller buttons to be the alternate tray toggles, like left-alt and left-ctrl are by default, and two buttons to be jump/fly up and down which wrks quite well for the 4 triggers on my controller.
That makes it easy to bind up to 12 powers to the 4 face buttons on the right of the controller.

You can bind all your targeting needs tot he digital pad on the left as well. That still leaves you with the 2 buttons under the analog sticks and the 2 buttons in the middle of the controller.

You don't really need to bind toggles to the pad since they stay on even when mezed after you activate them once.
I find it best to setup my numpad to activate certain spots on my trays for those toggles, even fly and hover and sprint, and other powers that are used a lot less.

The only trouble I have is how I am going to make location target powers work with the controller like "shield charge", the mastermind pet summons, "teleport" or any other similar power.
That's the hard part and may just require using the keyboard at those moments. Luckily, those powers usually recharge so slow or are not needed most of the time so it may work.

I'm finding...with my Xbox 360 controller...that the game does not seem to recognize the 2nd joystick.

The left joystick and the joypad work fine...however, the right joystick does not work with the keymapping...it's as if the game does not recognize the 2nd joystick.

There should be a "mode" button on your gamepad that allows you to switch from analog to digital which will likely enable it once switched to analog.

Other than that, you may need to enable the joystick under the controls tab in options or reinstall the software for the gamepad or just mess around with the software for it.

Well I couldn't get my Xbox 360 controller working...but I got my cheap game elements controller working.

I must say...it's like a brand new game with a controller.

Yea, that 2nd 360 joystick never worked in game IIRC. Don't think I've ever read about a workaround.

Oh and welcome back. And if you forgot, ParagonWiki is your friend.

I did try using a joystick back in 2005 and whilst possible CoH like most PC games is designed to be played using mouse and keyboard and this doesn't tend to translate well to using a joystick but by all means try it.

The buttons will map to either JOY**** or the same as the mouse buttons in general but you are probably largely on your own trying to work out which binds to which control.
Binding a chat message (team chat would be good just please don't spam broadcast) would help identify them.

I've found my PS3-like controller to work pretty damn good. Of course, I still have to use my mouse for clicking on contacts opening doors and what not...but the rest of the game play is done with the controller...which has more than enough buttons for what I'm trying to do.

However, I am curious...is there anyway that I can set up my controller so that the four face buttons can be the first four attacks...and then pressing R1+the four face buttons for four different attacks?

You would have to change the function of R1 outside the game in your controller management software.
You change it to whatever key you have set as one of the "alternate tray toggle" buttons listed in "keymapping" in game. The default for those are "left-ctrl" and "left-alt". One defaults to activating powers in the second row of the old default power trays and one the 3rd row.

I've figured this all out, except how to make the location target powers work well with the gamepad. I'm still working on that.

When I toyed with this, I found the best way to use the XBOX 360 (wireless) controller was to use a program like Pinnace Game Profiler to map the joystick to certain KEYBOARD commands. The right joystick you can set to act as a mouse. As someone else mentioned, doing this you can map a button or two as ALT, SHIFT, or CONTROL to get more uses out of your buttons. (Pinnace Game Profiler is not free, but there are other programs that do the same thing and that ARE free, such as Xpadder (?sp)).

Done this way, I don't have to care about CoH's own implementation of the Joystick.

This worked best for my BLASTERS who didn't need to get in close (repeatedly) with any sort of precision. For melee guys, it's a little too sloppy, imo.

You can use a program to map your controller to your keyboard and mouse, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was. Basically I hot keyed the common buttons like jump, targeting stuff, and the like to the buttons, and mapped the right analog stick on my 360 controller to control the mouse cursor. It worked, but it was a little slow. The hardest part was camera movement.

EDIT: Oh yeah! It was called Pinnacle Game Profiler.

I've been using a Logitech gamepad with this almost from the beginning. It takes a a lot of keybinding but I rarely have to use the mouse; mostly for things like the market, base editing, rearranging Inspirations and Enhancements.

I was using the Logitech software for a long time but recently switched to the free version of Xpadder so I can easily switch the gamepad configuration to mouse control and back again.
