Traps/AR Godmode Build

Quick note: Due to Assault Rifle being Assault Rifle, don't expect this build to really go anywhere damage-wise until level 41. Also, the slot levels are haywire.

This build is designed for laying waste to hordes of enemies solo or in a small team. This build has totally softcapped defense (45.4% melee, 45.4% ranged, 44.7% AoE) and provides about 25% of this defense to the team itself through Maneuvers+FFG. Aid Other and Aid Self aren't absolutely necessary, you can probably replace them with Hasten/Superspeed if you wanted. Damage is good - with Trap's debuffs, Power Build Up and Assault, and AR's AoE carnage, you'll be clearing out plenty of enemies.

Standard tactic: Throw down some Caltrops and set a poison gas trap, back up and set your triage beacon/acid mortar/seeker drones. You'll want the traps to be set Pull them into the trops+gas with Burst, then once the group's there, your Acid Mortar and Seeker Drones will get going. After the mortar and seekers hit and trashes the group's defense/to-hit, Power Build Up, Ignite, Flamethrower, Full Auto. Finish up the remaining enemies with burst/buckshot/m30 while the rest recharges.

I wouldn't recommend soloing above +2 with this build. The smashing/lethal resist, at 50%, and defenders' low HP will probably prove fatal for you, even -if- you do have Aid Self and Triage Beacon for healing.

A couple things; PBU doesn't work with drops so it doesn't help much with Traps.

I'd slot ToHit debuffs in Seeker Drones -- it'll help protect you against def debuffs ... and will massively help your teammates.

PGT is an entertaining place to drop (up to 4!) damage procs.

I love Caltrops, but mostly as a place to mule more damage procs. By the late game, mobs tend to get nailed in place by teams anyway, so I dig the extra damage. Otherwise it's good area denial.

The proc in Triage Beacon will only affect you when you activate the power -- that's not a really good return on investment, IME.

There's a resistance debuff proc you can slot in Acid Mortar -- it's outlandishly tasty, especially since you can stack Acid Mortars (if not the effect from the proc) on tough targets.

And take hasten. No, seriously, take hasten. You want Drones and Acid Mortar up as often as possible.

I'm not a big fan of Aid Other / Self ... mostly because, at some point, someone will see AO on you and demand you follow the tanker just to keep him healed. Sorry, that ain't me. I think you'll get more mileage out of Assault and Tactics (Tactics especially since it helps mortar nail hard targets).

You also might want to consider a PPP for a +def shield.

I'm using trops to slow down enemies to keep them in range of Ignite, and the set bonuses the slow set provides.

I can probably do that at the cost of the 3% melee def Shield Breaker provides.

If I ditched Aid Other / Aid Self, this would be possible. Global recharge on this build is around 70% so it could benefit from Hasten. However, I haven't had any problems so far, and from what I've seen, not faceplanting > an extra bit of def/tohit debuff.

If someone asks a Traps defender to heal them, they need to get their brain checked. I did take and slot Aid Other due to Traps lacking a healing ability, but that heal is for emergencies, not as the tank's HP buffer.

Aid Self is there because, despite having 50% smash/lethal resist and softcapped defense, some attacks will get through.

At 45% defense to everything, extra defense isn't too necessary since even +4 enemies will probably only have a 10-15% chance to hit you. The 40% smashing/lethal resist I get from Temp Invuln and Power Build Up is definitely a lot better in my opinion.

Interesting.

I'm leveling a Traps/AR myself, albeit with a somewhat different build and focus. Less defense, more recharge. Something that tends to get overlooked is that Defender AR Ignite drops exactly the same fire patch as Blaster AR Ignite - if you can tack down an enemy with Web Grenade, the ST damage is enormous.

Edited to add: Another quirk relevant to Traps is that resistance debuffs also debuff damage debuff resistance. Acid Mortar multiplies the effect of Seeker Drones. This is one of the reasons why recharge is important to Traps - the more Acid Mortars and Seeker Drones you can stack, the lower enemy damage will be. The Achilles Heel -Res proc also helps. Of course, this is more relevant to targets that can survive more than one round of debuffing.

Also, I'm not sure that Seeker Drones can ever be made to do what I'd consider significant damage. The -tohit seems slightly more worthwhile to enhance, especially on top of high personal defense, but really it's the -dam and the ability to absorb alpha strikes that makes them handy IMO.

Here's a build where AO/AS is taken out and replaced with Hasten and Tactics. Additionally, a -res proc was put in Acid Mortar and Seeker Drones were given a -tohit set. Global recharge is about 60%, melee def is 44.1%, ranged def 47.2%, AoE def 48.5%.

I like the fact you have capped positional. However its at the cost of ALOT of +recharge and procs you could have in this build. Traps really shines with +Recharge by having 2 AM's out, 2 Beacon's, ect, ect. With a defenders low HP and lower resist cap I find its just as easy to lean only on your defense than it is to also have resistance (your milage may vary). Black Scorp Shield is pure win in my build I'm way over the Smash/leathel cap, capped to energy, and only a few points from cap on everything else. Personally I always carry a trey of small purple insps. This will instantly cap you to whatever you need to dodge and also boost you higher when needed to fight off Debuffs. We have no innate DDR (Defense Debuff Resistance) so carrying that full load of purples at all times is a smart idea no matter which way you build your defense. Personally I'm still toying with my next build for I19 when Fitness becomes Inherant.

Another Note: Poison Gas Trap.

I used to be a huge fan of slotting the dmg proc's into this back when it was *cough* a bit broken. Today, with 4dmg procs its good but not the nuke it once was. So I messed around with alternate slotting and the best I came up with that I like is as following.

Basilisk Gaze hold/rchrg, Basilisk Gaze -rechrg% Proc, Lockdown hold/rechrg, Lockdown +mag2 Hold Proc, Unbreakable Constraint hold/rechrg, Unbreakable Constraint 33% chance Dmg proc.

I wouldn't get all that wrapped up over soft-capping def. At the end of the day, unenhanced, each drone is a 10 ToHit debuff.

My Dark / Traps def was soloing 0 / 8 spawns of Freaks by the early 30s. The various tricks in Traps add up to more than enough mitigation so that, once you rack up more than about 30ish def, you're gilding the lily.
