Is a Mastermind better than a bane?

Thanks for the helpful advice. Had thought that with my defense already this high I wouldn't need a purple, but I see what you mean.

Yep, Ballista was a Elite Boss with FF. He kept knocking me far from him with the the Force Bolt. Went back to the base and made a KB temp power that adds +10 for an hour.

I don't mind throwing thermal shields out for 20 seconds every 4 minutes. I really don't think about it anymore after playing every pet type with thermal up past 30. Have been casting them so many times I have a built in timer in my head for 4 minutes. Having fun with my current 34 demon/thermal. With leadership's Assault, Forge and Hell on Earth the big guy gets a damage bonus of 103.75% that lasts a hell of a lot longer than buildup (90 seconds). Plus with all those little guys running around helping you fight, its like Gangwar on drugs. Hasten is on auto and I can keep Forge (30% damage bonus) on up to 4 of the pets at all times. This is by far the most damaging mm set in the game. Plus the demon resistance is very high or soft-capped. The pets never die on me and rarely need to be healed.

I still play the bane, but he ran out of Patrol xp. I have 6 alts that I play all at the same time, but only when their Patrol xp gets full. If you're going to build up several alts to 50 anyway, you may as well do it 50% faster. Did the same thing on rested characters when I used to waste my time on WoW for the double xp. Took me half the time to get all 10 characters up to 80.

Oh... her. Bane doesn't have "repel" resistance so without acrobatic, I can see why it can be very frustrating.

What's left is to normalize all Assassin Strikes and improve Stalker's old sets (Claw, MA and EM)! You don't need to bring back the missing PbAoE attack. You just need to make the existing ones better! For example, make Slice a WIDER and LONGER cone.

Epic archetype does not mean "zomg power!". Epic means canon-bound.

Hey Fireswap I just wanted to chime in real quick about Placate. When you use it you get a chance to crit on Anything surrounding you before it hits you!

When my bane is scrappin' a large group I use Crowd Control > Placate Crowd Control! Two crits on like 6 or 10 people...Sorry I forget what the max is for Crowd Control. I wish you could tag along with me so I can see how your bane performs and I can show you what my bane can do as well.

Edit: Dmg Wise a MM is better than anything I would wager...so no point of comparing the two honestly.

I'm on Virtue if you are. Did not know that Placate worked on multiple foes.

It does not. What he said (and clarifying it a bit) is that if you placate an enemy out of say..5 enemies, if you are lucky and re-enter the "hidden" state you will be able to pull off a fast critical. You are not hidden for all of the 5 enemies, just the one you have placated, but, because you are hidden you might be able to hit a second critical attack, provided you don't get hit before you activate the attack.

So he means that somehow he has an unnaturally huge deal of +recharge and he can chain Crowd+Placate+Crowd. Without a great deal of +recharge, i'm thinking that he is exaggerating.

...which is pretty easy with high defense.

LOL, close. I'm not exaggerating but I paraphrased the Attack chain. Here's how I do it.

Walk up to a mob and hit Crowd Control: It crits then while crowd control is recharging I Use my other Hard hitting attacks...now in keep in mind guys Crowd Control recharges in about...what 8 seconds or less with Hasten running so using other attacks while you wait shouldn't be an issue. Once Crowd control is charged again hit Placate then Crowd Control Immediately after and you crit on the mob once more...the only catch is not getting hit when you use placate.

I'm not even exaggerating b/c mids is reading that Crowd Control recharges in 6.53 seconds with hasten running so imagine a purpled out build. Banes aren't the best but they should be able to take out an EB...the real problems with Bane's are lacking a self heal I think.

That i agree, but still, you can't chain Crowd/Placate/Crowd. It will take you a gazillion of recharge to do it, if it is possible at all. The only flaw in Crowd is that you have to hit the enemies from behind in order for it to critical and even then, it is not 100% certain that it will confirm into a critical hit.

I have a Bane too, i always liked him for the fact that he is a mix between all the melee archetypes. Tougher than a Stalker, weaker than a Tank. The healing problem should go away once the new inherent fitness power kick in. That can leave you 2 free slots to grab aid another and aid self, so, if you plan on getting some pets along the |bane| way (or crab), you can grab the heal for the pets plus the heal for yourself.

Not sure if it's mentioned already, but Venom Grenade is worth taking. Yes, it causes redraw but so what. Especially since it stacks with Poison Ray, it's a solid means of keeping your DPS up between stealth strikes.

I thought about taking Venom Grenade and using it with Surveillance cloaked before you shatter your target, but then I learned that Venom Grenade causes damage so it can't be used while cloaked.

I mean if we could one shot purples, everyone would be a bane

This is incorrect. It's a straight 50% chance to critical when hidden (which is standard for melee aoes) - positioning and facing do not matter at all.

(just in case: to clarify, that's 50% chance rolled separately for each target hit, rather than a single all-or-none 50% chance to crit)

Oh! Sorry you mean as a constant chain! No, by no means can you do that but you can do it in bursts. Pretty much what stops it from being a chain is the recharge on Placate.

Positioning indeed doesn't matter for that attack. If they are close they will be hit even if they are standing behind you. I just tested that on some LB who were crowded up close to me.

I wish mids could show you the numbers of attacks when you manage to crit from hide.

It technically shouldn't be able to hit enemies that are behind you as it's a 180 degree arc to the front. That said, it's got such a wide "cone" that it gets a little fuzzy sometimes when everything's really bunched up around you (I'm guessing that maybe although the graphic for the enemy is behind you, their "hitbox" may extend a little beyond that such that it can be partially placed within the front arc).

But I just meant for determining whether it'll crit or not.

No Problem Bio. I read up on my powers and abilities but my patience for anything math only goes so far.

I think the design behind SoA is probably having Crab start alpha first (as they can't hide) and that's why they have better shield/HP and better innate range defense (as opposed to melee defense). After Crab start with Venom, Bane(s) go in and mash the !@#$ out of the mobs. Venom can increase Bane's "toxic" damage by 40% which is quite a bit.

Yes, Bane has access to Venom as well because 1. if you use it in the beginning, you lose Hidden. 2. it causes a little redraw. I've tried to use Venom first and then Poisonous Ray.. ugh, it just feels so long. I rather just smash twice with Shatter and Pul.

That is like comparing apples and oranges. Banes can solo certain eb's, however they are sol when it comes to eb's that can unstop like Statesman. I think they were designed to function well in a team environment and excel when there are other VEATS in the group.

I think a fairer comparison would be Crabs that have spec'ed into the BS pool. Crabs are like pocket MM's with a lot of aoe's but no heals.

MM's built right are a team in themselves.

Use second build to make Huntsman, kite EBs to death.

Just make sure you eat three defense inspires at a time against eb's.

Ranged def is dead easy for a Soldier to cap, its one of the things that makes Huntsmen so good.

Yep, that is right -- I only wish a Huntsman"s damage was better. Players told me that a Blaster with AR does more damage. Checked it out on MIDS and they would be right -- DPS is higher. So a Huntsman is a weak blaster with an excellent defense?

When counting DPS don't forget to add in the AE resistance debuff from venom grenade and single target res debuff from surveillance - thats a 20% boost to AE damage (40% for toxic damage which includes every tick of venom grenade after the first) and another 20% boost to a single target like a boss/EB/AV. Just counting the base damage does not show the entire picture, just like with a defender or corruptor.

Comparing a huntsman to a blaster is a bad comparison. Blasters have the highest ranged/AE damage multiplier in the game but have almost no defenses and little to no group buff ability in exchange for that. A Huntsman probably has the second highest ranged damage multiplier (1.0 vs a blasters 1.125 and just ahead of a dominators 0.95) but they get very nice debuffs, extremely strong group buffs and can fairly easily hit the def softcap. A better comparison is to a corruptor - a huntsman is a corruptor with stronger damage, weaker debuffs, roughly equivalent group buffs and a lot more personal defense.

Just as an example - my huntsman is at 46% ranged def, 40% melee def and 30% AE def. He provides his entire group with 21% def to all positions (double stacked manuevers), 30% damage (double stacked assault) and 15% to hit. He stacks arctic breath (patron pool cone) on top of venom grenade for a 35% AE resistance debuff (55% for toxic damage) and can add 20% resistance debuff to a hard target with surveillance. My huntsman also has enough status effect protection that I don't think he has ever been mezzed - although he sometimes gets KB'ed since I only slotted one -KB IO. If you want more defenses you could go with a crab huntsman instead of a bane huntsman - trading the extra def in cloaking device for some fairly nice resistances and tank level status protection in fortification, although you would also lose the extra debuff in surveillance.

Indeed Huntsman bring SO much to the table! AR blasters bring dmg...and that's about it.

Geeze..you even took Arctic Breath. That's a lot of aoe!!!

And I agree that Huntsman brings more to the table than Blaster. I don't think there's any AT that can compare with Blaster's range damage but that damage comes with a pretty heavy price = lack of mez protection and almost no defense.
