Looking forward to the Spider-Man Musical?

It takes daring and originality to make a truly good musical that makes full utilization of that story telling format. Simply slapping a couple of catchy back beats to a pre-existing franchise is practically the antithesis of the art form.

Crap! I forgot the dancing Spider-Man!

Unfortunately, it'll probably be a big hit and make tons of money. Then it will get made into a movie.

Cats was one of broadway's longest running shows. The average musical fan doesn't know what Into The Woods or Assassins are.

This is endless aggravation for me.

Rumoredly, it needs to sell out every performance for five years straight to earn its money back.

Also, a new villain named Swiss Miss is just asking for guffaws.

Especially considering she looks like a Power Rangers villain.

Or a pin cushion.

While I've always enjoyed musicals, I don't know if I count as an "average musical fan." But since I don't typically go to theatres of the non-movie kind, I don't get exposed to a number of musicals unless I happen across them on TV, an actual movie version gets made, or someone happens to mention one I haven't seen which I can easily access.

"Into the Woods" has been added to my Netflix instant queue.
