Why is SERUM so bad?

Can anyone give me the story behind Serum?

Why is this power so terrible in a set that is seen by most as the bottom
performer out of the mastermind primaries?

Was it overpowered at one point, then massively nerfed to the state it is in today?


When something good happens to me, I can never enjoy it....
I am always too busy looking for the inevitable punchline...

The End crash, pretty much. Pets without end are mostly worthless.

And its on a ridiculously long recharge timer. Something close to 17 mins unslotted.

I have Serum on my Mercs/TA. I really expected it to be craptastic. It's only kind of meh, in my opinion. Serum can be a nice "Oh Crap" power to toss on a top tier pet. But other than that...it's a little lacking. For what it does, the end crash could be removed and it could have a much shorter recharge. So you could cast it on multiple pets.


My level 50 Dominators:
Madame Mindbender 50 Mind/Energy
Fly Agaric 50 Plant/Thorn
Nate Nitro 50 Fire/Psi

I tried it, found it lacking(reasons stated above), I skipped it after a Respec. Maybe after after i19 hits I will pick it up again for giggles.


I wish it work like in the movies , Drug up one of your guys, he throws his gun down, rips his shirt off and becomes a unstoppable melee beast for 90 secs

Rename it One man Army

Each tier would have a different power set

Tier 1 Marshal Arts with the new animations (medic would have a Taser and knockout hypo)
Tier 2 Broad Sword with a long Rambo knife
Tier 3 Super Strength with the new animations

After 90 sec recovery debuff, dam debuff, back to rifle (no crash)

Eh, what I think they should do is make it a nice counterpoint to the thugs 'Gang War,' that is, cut down the recharge time, lessen the effects and remove the end crash, but make it affect all of your pets.

Serum is bad because....

1. Long recharge and it doesn't offer Psionic resistance. If it does, then I probably would take it just in case we don't have anyone on the team that can handle pisonic damage.

2. Endurance crash

3. Insignificant damage buff

4 It's poorly designed because none of the pets can generate "aggro" so after the initial alpha, it's not like your Commando can grab aggro for the team or even for the other pets. A "god-mode" is useless if you can't grab aggro for the team. If I am soloing and I have a boss/elite/AV on me, I expect the Serum target to grab aggro. If the goal is to survive longer, I can achieve by throwing purples to Commando.


What's left is to normalize all Assassin Strikes and improve Stalker's old sets (Claw, MA and EM)! You don't need to bring back the missing PbAoE attack. You just need to make the existing ones better! For example, make Slice a WIDER and LONGER cone.

Was it once op and over nerfed?

or Were mercs as a whole once op, so the crappy utility power acceptable, and forgotten when meres were massively nerfed.

Are you telling me mercs have had this garbage since inception?

As far as I know, the dev have never changed Serum. I know it hasn't for the past 4 years.

The way it is now, is the way it was in CoV Beta. I have no idea why they haven't looked at this power.

The only decent thing about the power is that it gives your pet a 100% recovery buff and 52% damage resistance to everything but Psi.

The downside to this power is that it's a 16 minute recharge that only lasts 1 minute. If it's going to remain that long of a recharge, the buff should go to all pets and the duration at the least, doubled.

Eh. Serum's a decent power, except for its recharge (5 minutes would certainly be more reasonable if everything else about it remained unchanged). Toss it on a Merc who's starting to take too much damage and then toss him a blue when he crashes.
